REPUBLICA's U.S. album placed on hold.

RCA Records has put the Stateside release of REPUBLICA's sophomore album, Speed Ballads, on indefinite hold, according to a spokesperson for the band. The album was originally due in January (Allstars, Aug. 10, 1998).
Citing varying tastes between the U.K. and U.S markets, REPUBLICA has opted to re-enter a recording studio in England to lay down two or three new tracks for the album. The band also plans to remix a few existing tracks from the English version of Speed Ballads, which surfaced in the U.K. last October. The remainder of the album will be more or less the same.
Speed Ballads was co-produced by Lightning Seeds mastermind Ian Broudie. The first U.K. single, From Rush Hour with Love, was released in September 1998.
There was no word at press time which songs would be remixed or when the new version of Speed Ballads will hit stores in the U.S.

MTV Europe Music Awards 1998.

On Thursday evening in Milan, for the MTV Europe Music Awards 1998, Saffron and an Italian (I presume) presents the Select Central Award. The winner are Thomas D and Franka Potente for their single Wish - Komm Zu Mir. That day, Saffron was wearing a very nice red dress and jacket that suited perfectly with her hair.
I could record this part of the show on an audio tape, so you can listen to the charming voice of Saffron. Listen to Saffron (38secs., 152.0 kB).

REPUBLICA's ready to go with Speed Ballads.

REPUBLICA have put the finishing touches on Speed Ballads, the follow-up to their 1996 self- titled debut. The album was co-produced in London by the Lightening Seeds' Ian Broudie, among others. According to a source at RCA Records, the album leaves behind a lot of the dance-oriented techno found on their debut and is a progression that's probably more rock [than REPUBLICA].
The album's first single is undetermined as of yet, but possibilities include Faster Faster, From Rush Hour with Love, and Luxury Cage. Other titles include Try Everything and Nothing's Feeling New. Although Speed Ballads is slated for an Oct. 5th release in Europe, fans on this side of the pond will have to wait untill January. Also, the band has dwindled down from a five-piece to a trio, with Saffron on vocals, Tim Dorney on keyboards, and Jonny Male (who guested on REPUBLICA and has formerly worked with Stereolab and St. Etienne) on guitar.
Meanwhile, in addition to serving as the rallying cry for every hockey match in the country, REPUBLICA's breakthrough hit Ready to Go can now be heard on a commercial for the Mitsubishi Galant. Since the commercial started airing on July 26, sales of REPUBLICA have enjoyed a 150% sales increase -- not bad for a 30-second car commercial.

REPUBLICA records new album, taps new drummer.

British pop act REPUBLICA is currently working on the follow-up to their 1996 self-titled debut, which brought the group stateside success with the singles Ready to Go and Drop Dead Gorgeous.
After a year of touring both the U.S. and abroad, the band has been holed up in a U.K. studio for some time writing and recording their new album, which hasn't been hindered by the recent turnover in personnel.
A source in the REPUBLICA camp says that drummer Dave Barbarossa - the man who brought Burundi rhythms to Bow Wow Wow - is no longer with the group and that they are currently working with new drummer Pete Riley.
According to the band's official website (http://www.republica.com/), co-founder Andy Todd also left the group at the end of last year to pursue other recording projects, but a replacement for him has not been named.
REPUBLICA hopes to have the new record out by the end of '98, but no official date has been set.

REPUBLICA's Saffron is Thrilled to have dress in Hard Rock Cafe.

REPUBLICA singer Saffron's longtime wish to have something of hers proudly displayed among the rock and roll memorabilia at a Hard Rock Cafe has finally been granted. Her long silver dress and white shoes from REPUBLICA's video for Drop Dead Gorgeous will soon be shown off in the Chicago Hard Rock Cafe.
We had a great night at the Hard Rock, says Saffron. I am absolutely thrilled that my silver dress is going to be displayed alongside memorabilia from the greats of rock and roll. I remember when I was a kid and first went to the Hard Rock in London and thought, Wouldn't it be brilliant if something of mine went on these walls one day, and now they have.
Drop Dead Gorgeous is the second single off of the band's self-titled debut album Republica, which was released on RCA Records in 1996. The U.K. single of Drop Dead Gorgeous also features a Way Out West Remix of Bitch, another song off the album, and the original Chemical Brothers dub of REPUBLICA's Out of This World.
A spokesperson for RCA says that Chicago was the Hard Rock Cafe of choice because Drop Dead Gorgeous received a lot of airplay on modern rock station WKQX (Q101) in Chicago.

REPUBLICA salutes Gary Numan and L7 with help from The Prodigy.

When The Prodigy's Fat of the Land album hits stores later this year, fans may notice a familiar voice helping out on an equally familiar tune.
I've just done some backing vocals on the new Prodigy album, on a track with Keith (Flint), REPUBLICA singer Saffron told the MTV Radio Network recently. They're very good friends, and I'm very honored that they asked me to do that.
So what track brought the two British chart titans together?
We did a cover version of L7's Fuel My Fire, Saffron told MTV ( Listen to Saffron : 19secs., 39.5 kB).
The voice behind the songs Ready To Go and Drop Dead Gorgeous has also been busy with the rest of REPUBLICA reworking a vintage Gary Numan nugget for an upcoming tribute album to the synth pioneer.
We got do Are Friends Electric? with him, so that's a great honor to be asked to do that, Saffron told MTV ( Listen to Saffron : 14secs., 29.8 kB).
The REPUBLICA track will appear with contributions from Bis, Magnetic Fields, The Orb, Pop Will Eat Itself, St. Etienne, and Jesus Jones on the collection, due this month.

REPUBLICA does L7 for The Prodigy.

Longtime friends Saffron (of the rock/techno amalgamation called REPUBLICA) and The Prodigy have been working together for The Prodigy's next album.
Saffron sings backing vocals on a cover of L7's Fuel My Fire for the album, due in the spring on XL/Mute.
It was great, I got to sing, or really shout, with Keith (Flint), says Saffron, whose old band N-joi used to open for The Prodigy back in the day. It's a great song. We had a brilliant laugh doing it. I was really honored that they asked me to do it.
REPUBLICA, whose single, Ready To Go, from their self-titled debut album is all over alternative rock radio now, are on the road with Gravity Killsthrough the end of October. They head back to the U.K. for a holiday before returning to the U.S. for a West Coast tour in mid-November.
Saffron says she's having a blast on their first U.S. outing : People are crowd-surfing and moshing. In England, they don't do that for us. We've got girls running up onstage here and everything.
In somewhat related news, believe it or not, Bow Wow Wow has a greatest hits album coming out on RCA Records on Oct. 29 th. The hits? I Want Candy, Go Wild In The Country, and Do You Wanna Hold Me?, along with 19 other hits. The related part? REPUBLICA's drummer is Dave Barbarossa - you got it, the former drummer of Bow Wow Wow.
