Poetry from
  O togga, 'n Gogga

(Cape Town, South Africa: Tafelberg Publishers, 1984)
by Phillip de Vos

Neem 'n stukkie son,
neem 'n stukkie maan,
druppeltjie getap
uit die grote oseaan,
korreltjie sand
- korreltjie fyn,
korreltjie gehaal
uit die sandwoestyn -
gooi dit in jou knapsak,
hou dit as 'n pand
vir die pad wat aanhou
na die môrester se kant.

I'll take a piece of sun
and I'll take a piece of moon,
a droplet from the ocean deep
for I'll be going soon.
          And then into my rucksack
  I'll put a grain of sand -
And these will be my magic charms
'til I reach that far off land.
