Antimatter

Matter whose electrical charge properties are the opposite of "normal" matter. For example: a proton has a positive charge but an antiproton has a negative charge. When a particle of antimatter is brought into contact with an equivalent particle of normal matter, both particles are annihilated, and all their mass is released as energy. The controlled annihilation of matter and antimatter is used as the power source for the warp drive systems used aboard Federation starships. Beacause of the higly volatile nature of antimatter, it has to be stored in special magnetic containment vessels, also known as antimatter pods, to prevent antimatter from physically touching the storage vessel or anyother part of the ship.

Artifical Gravity Devices

Artificial gravity and inertial damping is achieved by machinery which function according to the same principles as those used in tractor beam technology. A controlled graviton field is projected by devices dispersed throughout the habitable sections of the hull. This explains why there is still gravity on starships during a total power failure.

Away team

Starfleet term for a specialized squad of personnel sent on an away mission which is another term used for an assignment that takes a team away from a ship, such as a landing party sent to a planet's surface.

Bridge

Primary command center for starships and other vessels. On most Federation starships, the bridge is located on deck 1 at the top of the primary hull.

Chronoton Torpedoes- Jeff allowed me to use this information from his site to use here.

Chronoton torpedoes are capable of penetrating the shields of a starship. This is achieved due to the torpedo being in a constant state of temporal flux and thus allowing it to penetrate a ships shields. However the torpedo does not have as much destructive power as a quantum torpedo. The drawback to this torpedo design is that it is so heavy it needs a completely different torpedo launcher. They are slower and larger so they can be easily tracked by sensors and then destroyed. They require a custom launching tube since they are larger and heavier. They are based on the Quantum Filament design. Each casing can carry up to 45 filaments.

Cloaking Device

An energy screen generator used to render an object invisible to the eye and most sensor systems. Most cloaking devices require so much power that a vessel so equipped cannot use weapon systems without decloaking. Romulan and Klingon spacecraft are often equipped with cloaking devices. Federation ships are prohibited from using cloaking device under the terms of the Treaty of Algeron

Communicator

Personal communcations device used by Starfleet personnel. Communicators provide voice transmission from a planetary surface to an orbiting spacecraft, and betweem members of a landing party. Communicators also provide a means for a ship's transporter system to determine the exact coordinates of a crew member for transport back to the ship. Early versions of the communicator were compact handheld units with a flip up antenna grid, but more recent units have been incorporated into the Starfleet insignia worn on each crew member's uniform and had a dermal sensor that can be used to restrict usage to one authorized individual only.

Deflector Shields

Energy field used to protect starship hull from harm resulting from natural hazards or enemy attack. The transporter can not function when the shields are active. Also reffered to as deflectors, shields or screens

Dilithium crystals

Crystalline substance used in warp propulsion systems aboard starships. Dilithium regulates the matter/antimatter reactions that provide the energy necessary to warp space and travel faster than light. Naturally occurring dilithium is extremely rare and is mined on only a few planets. Until the advent of recrystallization techniques that permitted the production of sunthetic dilithium, the crystals were among the most valuable substance in the galaxy. This break-through occurred in 2286 when Spock (who had traveled back in time to 1986), devised a means whereby dilithium crystals could be recrystallized by exposure to gamma radiation (high energy photons) that were by-products of nuclear fission reactions. By the late 2360s, recrystallization techniques had advanced to the point that crystals could be recomposited while still inside the articulation fram of the dilithium chamber, extending the useful life of the crystals even further.

Disruptor

Directed energy beam weapon used by Romulans, Klingons and other races.

Holodeck / Holosuite

Also known as a Holgraphic Enviroment Simulator, the holodeck permits the simulation of virtually any enviroment or person with a degree of fidelity virtually indestinguishable from reality. The holodeck employs three-dimensional holographic projections as well as transporter based replications of actual objects. A large library of simulations is available in the holodecks of starships and the holodeck software permitts programs to be customized according to user preferences. Holodecks are used for a wide range of recreational, sports, and training applications.

Hypospray

The Hypospray is a medical device used in the Sickbay to inject a patient with a medicine without penetrating the skin, that is why no pain is felt. The Hypospray has many atvantages, especially with hygene and waste products (Needles).

Impulse Engine

Spacecraft propulsion system using conventional impulse reactions to generate thrust. Aboard most Federation starships, impulse drive is powered by one or more fusion reactors that employ deuterium fuel to yield helium plasma and a lot of power. A ship under impulse drive is limited to sublight speeds. Normally, full impulse speed is about half the speed of light. Although this is adequate for most interplanetary travel (i.e. within a single solar system) it is inadequate for travel between the stars. Faster-than-light velocities, necessary for interstellar flight, require the use of warp drive.

Interphase-cloaking device- Jeff allowed me to use this information from hs site.

This device allows a starship to travel through solid matter and energy as well as functioning like a cloaking device. A molecular phase inverter is used to move a ship out of phase with our plane of existence making it virtually invulnerable. No weapon would be able to damage it. However as all cloaking devices give off chroniton particles which are detectable by a finely tuned sensor make the ship traceable. Using an anyon emitter the effect would be counteracted and the ship would return to our plane. However as already stated only a finely tuned sensor can pick the by-products up still making this weapon a dangerous device. Phasers, Torpedoes and even Shields would be useless. They would simply pass through it.

LCARS Interface Software

LCARS is the crew interface software and is standard on all the latest Federation starships. LCARS is short for Library Computer Acess & Retrieval System.LCARS software continually monitors operator activity and reconfigures the display surface to present the operator with a selection of the most frequently chosen courses of action in that particular situation. The LCARS software also provides the operator with full information (to the level selected by the operator or by operation rules) to choose any other legal action.

Matter / Antimatter Reaction Chamber

Component of the Warp drive system used aboard Federation starships. The reaction chamber is the vessel within which matter and antimatter are allowed to intermix in a controlled fashion, resulting in the massive release of energy necessary to power the warp drive.

Nanoprobes

Nanoprobes are atonomous robots capable of performing micro surgery or other precision tasks. They have approx. the size of human bloodcells. They were designed to repair damaged cells within the body, but are now also used as a weapon aganst species 8472. Also Wesley has proved that they can evolve a high degree of intelligence, when they are working together (TNG: Evolution).

Navigational Deflector

On many starships, a powerful forward-looking directional deflector used to push aside debris, meteroids and other objects that might collide with the ship. The navigational deflector can also be used to channel large amounts of energy.

Phasers

Acronym for PHASed Energy Rectification. A directed energy beam weapon used by the Federation Starfleet and others. Phasers are used as sidearms by Starfleet personnel. Most such weapons are either phaser type I (hand phasers) which are used primarily when unconspicous weapons are desirable or the larger and more powerful phaser type II (phaser pistol) capable of high power. Type III phasers, also known as phaser rifles can also be seen. Large ship-mounted weapons (type X), often called phaser banks are standard equipment aboard Starfleet vesels.

Phaser Cannons :

Phaser Cannons : Starfleet has been playing with the idea of Phaser Cannons for well over 50 years. Numerous test prototypes have been produced and unfortunately failed. A Phaser Cannon, or most commonly known as the Disruptor Cannon takes a large amount of phased energy and bundles it in a cohesive shell. This shell is either magnetic or graviton based, however over distance it does dissapate, leaving the phased energy to escape into space, rendering it harmless. The Klingon, Romulan and Breen Empires all have developed disruptor technology and developed it to a point where it is a very effective weapon with an excellent range. The Federation however took a different path in the design of its phased energy technology, opting for a more refinded singular beam. This Type X array has severed Starfleet well, however it does have its downfalls. Helm to Tactical responce times were highly unacceptable with a mobile, very poweful attack force. This factor, in combination with phaser array refocusing time forced Starfleet to develop the new Phaser Cannon. This development project was also pushed into being by the first Borg Encounter in system J-25. Previously all test projects had failed, however this time, with help from Malz, a renoun Klingon scientist the highly unusual Federation style Phaser cannon came into being. The cannon uses a pulse modulated graviton shell to hold the phased energy together, the energy itself being fed directly from the Warp engines (instead of from batteries supplied by the warpcore). Once fitted to the Defiant these cannon (four all together) proved to be excellent in simulated wargame exercises, the Helm to Tactical responce time nearly flatlined. However problems arose with the amount of energy being channeled from the Defiants oversized warpcore. There was massive recoil problems with the ships warp nacelles threating to be torn off, the SIF not able to cope with the extra stress.

Photon Torpedo

Tactical weapon used by Federation starships. Photon torpedoes are self-propelled missiles containing a small quantity of matter and antimatter bound together in a magnetic bottle, launched at a targed. Photon torpedoes are usually the weapon of choice when a ship is at warp speed, since they are not limited by the speed of light. The warhead can be removed from a photon torpedo, leaving a small, high-speed missile that can be used as an intrumented probe, to transport small objects. Torpedo casings are also often used for burials in space.

Probes (scientific / tactical)

Starfleet standard general use probes, are divided into nine classes, arranged according to sensor types, power, and performance ratings. The features common to all nine are spacecraft frames of gamma molded duranium-tritanium and pressure-bonded lufium boronate, with certain sensor windows of triple layered transparent aluminum. Sensors not utilizing the windows are affixed through various methods, from surface blending with the hull material to imbedding the active detectors within the hull itself. All nine classes are equipped with a standard suite of instruments to detect and analyze all normal EM and subspace bands, organic and inorganic chemical compounds, atmospheric constituents, and mechanical force properties. While all are capable of at least surviving a powered atmospheric entry, only three are designed to function for extended periods of aerial maneuvering and soft landing. Many of the probes also include varying degrees of telerobotic operation capabilities to permit real time control and piloting of the probe. This permits the investigation team to remain on board the starship while exploring what might otherwise be a dangerous hostile or otherwise inaccessible environment.

Quadrant

In interstellar mapping, a quadrant is one-fourth of the Milky Way Galaxy. The Galaxy is divided into four quadrants, each forming a 90-degree pie wedge as seen from above the galaxy's plane. The four quadrants are labeled Alpha, Beta, Delta and Gamma. The United Federation of Planets is located mostly in the Alpha Quadrant, although parts spill over into the Beta. Station Deep Space Nine is located in the Alpha Quadrant. The Klingon and Romulan empires are located in the Beta Quadrant. The Borg homeworld is believed to be in the Delta Quadrant, while the Bajoran wormhole has one terminus in the Gamma Quadrant.

Replicator

A device that uses technology similar to the transporter to dematerialize a quantity of matter, then to rematerialize it in another form. Replicators are used aboard Federation starships to provide a much wider variety of meal choices to crew members than would otherwise be available if actual foodstuffs had to be carried, since the selection available is limited only by software. Most people find replicated food indistinghuishable from "original" food, although some individuals claim to be able to tell the difference.

Runabout

Generic term for small Federation starships used for reletively short-range interstellar travel. Resembling an enlarged shuttlecraft, runabouts have a relatively limited flight range. The runabout cockpit incorporates a short-range two person transporter, as well as seating for four people, including a two person flight crew. The runabout's aft section contains living accommodations, and the midsection is a detachable module that can be replaced for different mission profiles.

Shuttle Bays

Large facility aboard Federation starships used fro the launching and recovery of shuttlecrafts.

Shuttlecraft

Small, short-range spacecraft, intended primarily for transport from a deep-space vessel to a planet's surface, or for travel within a solar system. A variety of shuttlecrafts types have been seen aboard different starships over the years. Most shuttles are capable of sublight travel only, and virtually all are capable of planetary landing and takeoff.

Sickbay

Medical care facility aboard Federation starships and other space vessels. The sickbay aboard the Starships Enterprise include on or more intensive-care wards, a doctor's office, a medical laboratory an OB/GYN unit, as well as other facilites including an examination room and rehabilitation equipment. Sickbay is the responsibility of the ship's chief medical officer. In the latest Starships is a holographic doctor installed to temporarily replace the real doctor.

Subspace

Spatial continuum with significantly different properties from our own, a fundemental part of Warp Drive. Warp-drive starsips employ a subspace generator to create the asymmetrical spatial distortion necessary for the vessel to travel faster than light. Supspace is also used as a medium for subspace radio transmissions.

Tractor Beam

When a starship is called upon to manage objects in space, it can employ its Tractor Beam Remote Manipulators. The Tractor Beam may be used to tow other spacecraft, change the course of space objects, or manipulate remote instrumentation outside of the ship. The Tractor Beam can also be used to guide the docking of shuttlecraft, as well as maneuver within a space dock.

Tractor Beam emitters employ a focused linear graviton force beam and are located on the surface of a vessel at key locations to allow objects of virtually any bearing(relative to the ship) to be manipulated.

Transporter

A matter to energy conversion device used to provide a means of transportation. The transporter converts an object and/or person into energy, beams that energy to another location, then reassembles the subject into its original form. Transporters are unable to function when deflector shields are operational.

Transwarp Drive

Transwarp and the Transwarp drive were an experimental technology for increasing the efficiency and speed of starship propulsion systems. Though the project showed great promise and was extensively tested on the USS Excelsior, Federation scientists could not make it work successfully and abondoned the project.

An artificially created subspace tunnel, or Transwarp Conduit was used by a Borg ship of unusual and previously unknown design in 2369. The Tranwarp Conduit was capable of defying normal subspace limitations and allowed maximum speeds up to twenty times faster than a Galaxy class starship. This series of transwarp conduits was accessed by an encoded high-energy tachyon pulse.

The actual method or process of using Transwarp drive and Transwarp Conduits is unknown and has not been stated in any show. However, a rare form of Dilithium, called "Trilithium" was used by the Voyager crew in an attempt to recreate the original Tranwarp experiments. Unfortunatly Voyagers tests ended in abject failure. The reason for this being the sudden and spontaneous occupation of every point in the universe when an object reached Warp 10, the theoretical barriar of warp drive.

There is speculation that the original Tranwarp drive was an attempt to create an opening via interphase and travel through another dimension. Since time flowed at a differant rate in this other dimesion a three week journey via interphase would only take three days in real space. However, this is only a stop gap measure and creates unpleasent senarios akin to the Relativity problems of non-warp interstellar travel.

Other theories include the possibility that the tranwarp conduits act as containment fields, much like the Transporters annular confinement field. This containent field would maintain the integrity of the object and keep it from spreading out to occupy every point in the universe.

Tri-Cobalt Device.

During the initial scare in System J-25 with the Borg one of Starfleets many projects was the Tri-Colbalt Device. It was the predecessor of the Quantum Torpedo but in effect had ten times the destructive capability. Again, this project used three of the most powerful explosives know to Starfleet, Tri-Cobalt, Antimatter and Quantum Filaments. As mentioned, the Quantum Torpedo uses Quantum Filaments which arc out over the targets hull ripping it to shreads, however the principle with the Tri-Cobalt device differs from this. Tri Cobalt is normally a reasonable stable compound unless it is broken down at the molecular level. In the past Starfleet had tried to use it as an explosive, but failed due to impractical methods. However with the discovery of Artifical Quantum filaments the situation changed drastically. The design of the Tri-Cobalt device is highly unique in the Alpha Quadrant. It uses a three tear warhead. One compartment is loaded with Antimatter, one with around 200 Quantum filaments and an appropriate amount of Tri-Cobalt. Upon impact there is a number of things that happen inside the warhead. Firstly the Quantum filaments are released into the Tri-Cobalt chamber creating a cascade reaction, mixing the Tri-cobalt into a highly volatile mixture. A millisecond later the magnetic containment field around the antimatter is released and the active Tri-Cobalt and Anti hydrogen mix together creating a lethal explosion. The weapon is capable of disabling starships with one blow, as starfleet unfortunatly found out. Initial testing of the weapon took place just before Wolf 359. Designers were panicked and rushing the project through under Starfleets hasty gaze. USS Keel, an Excelsior class ship was the test vessel. The first few barrages in the Astroid field in the Terran system proved to be massively sucessful. However in the final day of testing an accident occurred. One of the devices lodged itself in its lauching tube and the warhead went critical. The resultant explosion tore the saucer section clean off the Keel and the minutes later the warp core in the drive section went critical. A total of 40 lives were lost in the accident and only weeks later Wolf 359 Occurred. Designers eventually figured out what had gone wrong. The Tri-Cobalt device was in theory much heavier than a standard photon torpedo, and although the designers had taken this into account when modifying the lauching tubes on the Keel they had not been sufficient. After the disaster at Wolf 359 Starfleet was still interested in using the Tri-Cobalt device on Starships. Quantum Torpedos were now in development, however the sheer destructive capability of the weapon was seen as a possible defence against the Borg, whos vessels were very large targets. The designers took the launching system back to the drawing board and eventually came up with a highly safe system. From that point on Starfleet order all new ships to be fitted with this kind of launching system and a steady retrofitting of the defencive capabilities of the other ships in the fleet (Note the Lakota). The standard ship compliment is for four Tri-Cobalt devices. Any more would pose great danger to the ship. In addition ships on diplomatic or internal missions are have the warheads removed for safety reasons.

Tricorder

Multipurpose scientific and technical instrument. This handheld device incorporates sensors, computers and recorders in a convenient, portable form. Several models of tricorders have been seen over the years but are always an essential part of starships operations and away-team missions.

Turbolifts

Starfleet term for a high-speed elevator system used aboard Federation starships and bases for intraship personnel transport. Turbolifts are controlled verbally, with a voice-recognition computer device that directs elevator movements both horizontally and vertically within the ship.

Universal Translator

Universal Translators are used to provide real-time two-way translations of spoken languages. These are sophisticated computer programs stored on board Starship computer banks. These programs analyze samples of alien languages and derive translations within minutes, although much more extensive analysis is necessary before they may be used for diplomatic functions. Away Teams may access the Universal Translator programs with their Comm Badges via subspace links.

Vulcan nerve pinch

The http://www.oocities.org/Area51/Chamber/6139/vulcan.html">Vulcans also master a technique in which finger pressure is applied to certain nerves at the base of the neck, instantly and nonviolently rendering that individal unconcious. Although the technique appears to work on nearly all humanoid species (and several nonhumanoids as well), few non-Vulcans have been able to master the nerve pinch.

Warp Drive

The Warp drive is the primary propulsion system used by most faster-than-light interstellar spacecrafts. Warp drive systems used by Federation Starships employ the controlled annihilation of matter and antimatter, regulated by dilithium crystals to generate the tremendous power required to warp space and travel faster than light. Warp drive was invented in 2061 by noted scientist Zefram Cochrane. Warp speed is achived by enclosing the ship with a subspace field also known as a warp field or warp bubble. This field causes the warping of normal space which allows the ship to travel between two points faster than light outside the warp field would.

Warp Nacelles

In starship design, a large outboard structure that houses a warp drive engine. Nacelles generally incorporate powerful subspace field generation coils and somtimes have bussard collectors to gather interstellar hydrogen. Most Federation starships designs feature two warp engine nacelles mounted parallel to the axis of flight. (see Warp Drive)

Wormhole

A tunnel through subspace connecting two points in normal time and space. Most wormholes are extremely unstable and their endpoints fluctuate widely across time and space. An improperly balanced warp-drive system can create an artificial wormhole that can pose a serious danger to the ship and its crew.
