The Original Series
(1966-1969)
I remember watching TOS as a kid. I think this was the best Star Trek series to date. It was a show that actuly had a purpose. To bad Star Trek has been turned into a shadow of it's former self. I can't stand how they destroyed the reasons behind the old series. The old Enterprise encountered very few anomalies on it's five year mission. Every other series beyond that had a space anomaly every three episodes. The purpose of a space anomaly is that it is a rare occurance which the crew must band together to find an answer to the given problem. TOS didn't rely on this throwaway plot. TOS had original episodes that dealt with tangible conflict, not some stuiped mind-fucking gaseous energyfield.
U.S.S. Enterprise (NCC-1701)
(Yes! Unneccesary and wanton destruction on a galactic scale!)
Sure! The ship looked cheap. But it definatly kicked ass! It didn't have all those goodies that the new series had. Namely Replicators, Holodecks, or 3000 sqr ft bedrooms. It didn't need them! Julius Caesar said it best "Let them eat grass."
Captain James T. Kirk
(Don't let that toupee fall off)
Captain Kirk was cool. He was a stubborn bully who would kick ass if he didn't get his way. I especially loved the episode "Armagedon Game." In that episode the Enterprise is a casualty in a computer war between two planets. Captain Kirk threatens to blow up the fucking planet if the alien race doesn't let two of his crewmen go. If Janeway had half the balls Kirk had, she'd be home by the third episode.
Commander Spock
"Live wrong and perspire"
Spock was cool. He was always right even when wrong. This guy could destroy the universe and have some logical reason for doing so. Philip K. Dick said this was because God speaks like Spock. He continued saying that was the reason They have Leonard Nimoy host psudo-science TV shows. He can make you belive anything! Except to buy his next book. Or his son's books for that matter.
Doctor McCoy (Bones)
"God damm it! I'm an actor, not a doctor!"
McCoy was the comic relief of TOS. Not only the witty Spock insults, but also the magical line "He's dead Jim!" This always came after the more humorous redshirt death. Scotty better watch out. Those shirts are deadly! Too bad the redshirt tradition didn't continue to TNG and beyond.
Communications officer, Uhura
(Will wonderbras never cease!)
We never learned much about Uhura during TOS, Thanks to those racists in the bible beater belt. The only thing I found out about her was that she was black. The movies showcased her less. Except for that sick display in "Star trek V- The search for god". That was just uncalled for!
Chief Engineer, Montgomery Scott
"I can't eat much more! I'm gonna blow"
The Scottish have always been good engineers. Scotty was no exception. He always saves the ship at the last moment. Next time you see a TOS episode divide Scotty's repair estimates by four an see how long to really takes.
Weapons officer, Checkov
"Do you think i'm sexy?"
Checkov was a communist geek. He always tried to score with chicks. His only success was with Ensign Rand. Which was more that Sulu. He is another grey area in TOS. The episodes mainly centered around Kirk, Spock, and McCoy so we never learned more about any of the others.
Helm officer, Sulu
(Hey! No flash photography on the bridge!"
Sulu always got the shaft in every episode. He also got the shaft in real life. Everytime something big happened to Sulu it was always overshadowed by Kirk, Spock, and McCoy. He finnaly got a ship though. Too bad he was only featued as the Captain of it in two short cameos during ST:VI and one bad episode of Voyager.
Nurse Chapel
Gene's old woman herself. Not only was she featured as McCoy's underling but was also the voice of the computer in TOS, TNG, DS9, and Voyager. She was also Deanna's mother L'waxana Troi. In the end she has been in every episode of Star Trek, past and present. Not a bad deal!
Ensign Rand
(Wow! Check out Marge's new beehive!)
The only woman to go on away missions. Her duties were to touch up her makeup, be thrown around by Kirk when there was danger, scream when someone died, get kidnapped, screw around with Chekov, and to ask cabbage head quesions. If it wasn't for her we wouldn't have a full episode four out of five times.
