I copied this post from Mindy, our resident Tournament Liason, off the L5R info server. I figured that there might be several people out there that have not seen this. Here it is, exactly as it was posted by Mindy. Good luck to all that will be participating at the Day of Thunder Tournament. I only wish I were able to attend. Note: you might want to print this out if you are planning on entering the tournament.
Play will be one-on-one, built-deck, double elimination beginning at 6:00pm Friday and going until midnight, then resuming on Saturday at 11:00am, continuing until 3:00pm Saturday, when we will have gotten the field down to 8 people with no losses and 12 people from the "challengers" bracket. To make up the final 12 slots, we are going to do something unusual and fun, and seed in the top player from each clan in the Skirmish League game that will be running concurrently with this tournament.
All rounds will be 45 minutes long, player assignments will be random in each round, and in the event of a game that has not been finished by the time limit we will be using the following rules to determine the winner of the game: +1/-1 Per point of Honor (Junzo is counted as having a zero). +10 Points for being the Attacker when a province is destroyed. +8 Each elemental Ring that you have in play.
All sign up for this tournament will be done at the convention, through the Events Sign-up system that GenCon has in place. We will be seating 256 people, and will allow alternates to sign up in case people do not show up. If you do not make it into the tournament, join Skirmishes and shoot for that wild-card slot!
Everyone who plays in the tournament will get a color-coded t-shirt with the clan "logo" on it so that we can tell just by looking across the room at the colors how different clans are doing. We will most likely also have some other fun stuff that you will get as you advance or are eliminated.
Beginning field of 256, randomly broken down as follows: "Red" group-128 players "Blue" group-128 players Everyone will need to show up at the beginning of the tournament to receive their color grouping and a copy of the rules.
6:00pm Friday-"Red" Group plays their first round placing 64 players in the "winners" bracket and 64 in the "challengers" bracket.
7:00pm Friday-"Red" Group plays their second round placing 32 players in the "winners" bracket and 64 people in the "challengers" bracket. 32 players will drop out at this point. "Red" "challengers" will have a break until 10:00pm and "Red" "winners" will have a break until 11:00pm.
8:00pm Friday-"Blue" Group plays their first round placing 64 players in the "winners" bracket and 64 in the "challengers" bracket.
9:00pm Friday-"Blue" Group plays their second round placing 32 players in the "winners" bracket and 64 people in the "challengers" bracket. 32 players will drop out at this point.
10:00pm Friday-Both the "Red" and "Blue" players in the "challengers" bracket play their third round resulting in 64 staying in the "challengers" bracket (at this point the colors stop mattering for "challengers"), and 64 players dropping out.
11:00pm Friday-Both the "Red" and "Blue" players in the "winners" bracket play, resulting in 32 "winners" and 32 "challengers". At the same time, we will run a round of the "challengers" bracket resulting in 32 "challengers" (which when combined with the "challengers" dropping down from the other game will result in 64 "challengers"). This leaves us with a total of 96 players that will be starting play again on Saturday.
At this point we will be collecting the decks of all of the people who are still in the tournament, and will be placing them in labeled ziploc bags for safe keeping. On Saturday morning, tournament play resumes in the booth. We will be using both the demo space and the tournament space for the first couple of rounds.
11:00am Saturday-The 64 "challengers" play a round, resulting in 32 "challengers"
Noon Saturday-The 32 "winners" and the 32 "challengers" play a round (each in one half of the booth), resulting in 16 "winners" and 32 "challengers"
1:00pm Saturday-The 16 "winners" and the 32 "challengers" play a round (each in one half of the booth), resulting in 8 "winners" and 24 "challengers". The 8 "winners" are advanced to the Finals and have a break until 3:30pm.
1:30pm Saturday-This is when the Skirmish players will need to come and turn in their decks so that we can determine who won. They will need to have their tournament ready decks with them at this point so that they will be ready to play at 3:30pm. The top person from each clan will be seeded into the tournament. This will essentially result in 12 "wild-card" positions into the finals. They will have to play the same clan in the tournament as they won Skirmishes with (not the same deck, just the same clan). There is an auxiliary sheet of rules for the Skirmishes League that will be given to all players when they sign up, and explains scoring, tie-breakers, etc.
2:00pm Saturday-The 24 "challengers" play a round, resulting in 12 people advancing to the Finals.
3:00 to 3:30pm-a very quick lunch break for the players who have been working their way through the "Challengers" bracket. You must be back at 3:30pm!
From this point forward, the tournament is single elimination.
3:30pm Saturday-32 Semi-Finalists (20 from the tournament and 12 Skirmishers)
4:30pm Saturday-16 people begin this round, 8 will advance to play on Sunday
11am Sunday-Finals--8 people play, advancing 4 to the Finals
Noon Sunday-4 people play, advancing 2 to the Grand Finale
1:00pm Sunday-The Grand Finale with the final 2 people battling for the prize!
The Phoenix Clan Stronghold will read as the new Stronghold card from Obsidian Edition with the following stats and text (if you do not yet have one of the new stronghold cards, ask us at the booth prior to the tournament, and we will be happy to provide you with one): Province Strength 5; Gold Production 3; Starting Honor 6; Bow to produce five gold when bringing a spell or Shugenja into play.
