BESAME*
Dana Scully chewed her pizza thoughtfully as she looked through the binoculars at the apartment complex across the street. It was the third night of what seemed to be turning into a pointless stakeout she and her partner, Fox Mulder, had been roped into doing. It had been three months since the X-files had been closed down and, while she and Mulder had been extremely grateful that they were allowed to continue on as partners, they were also becoming extremely bored with their work in Violent Crimes. Any other Agent probably wouldn't be able to understand their lack of interest, but after everything she and her partner had seen during the five years they had worked on the X-files, they just couldn't help but be bored with common, everyday crimes.
By night three of their stakeout, she and her partner had become bored out of their minds. Conversation had become thin, there had been no activity whatsoever in the apartment they were staking out, and they were both so sick of pizza that just the thought of mealtime made them nauseous.
Mulder was busy station surfing on the radio he had brought, desperate to find anything to relieve their boredom. As he turned the dial, he passed by a hard rock station that was playing "Don't Cry" by Guns n' Roses. Scully suddenly perked up and said, "Wait! Leave it there!"
Mulder stopped turning the dial, leaving it on the hard rock station and looked up at Scully with amusement. "You have got to be kidding me."
"What?" Scully asked innocently, trying to suppress a grin. "I like that song."
"I guess I just always figured you to be more of a Kenny G type of gal." Mulder said with a coy smirk on his face.
Scully winced.
"So my Scully likes Guns n' Roses, huh? I never would've guessed in a million years that my strictly scientific, no-nonsense partner was a 'rocker.'"
Scully paused in mid-chew. 'My Scully?' she thought. Mulder's use of the possessive "my" sent chills down her spine. But she just ignored it and pushed the feelings aside momentarily and continued what was turning out to be an amusing conversation. "I'm not a 'rocker,' Mulder, I just like that song. Listen to it, it's beautiful."
"Yeah, well, its still Guns n' Roses…"
"OK, well, what music do you like?"
"Me? Oh, I'm more of a Megadeath man, myself." He said with a mocking grin on his face. Scully could hear the laughter bubbling up in his voice. She could tell that he was trying very hard to hold it back.
"OK, now you're making fun of me."
"Yes, yes I am, actually and I'm sorry."
Scully turned to look out the window. Then she smiled to herself and said, "Eh, it's alright. I guess it is pretty funny."
They were silent after that until the song ended.
"Can I change it now?" Mulder asked.
Scully waited a second before answering so she could hear what was on next. "Ugh, yeah, go ahead," she turned back to face Mulder and smiled at him, "Van Halen. Not really my speed."
Mulder grinned and began to turn the dial again. He stopped on an oldies station. The Big Bopper's "Chantilly Lace" was playing. Mulder laughed out loud and set the radio on the table in front of him. Scully smiled too as they shared the same memory. The next song that came on was "I Can't Help Falling In Love With You" by Elvis. This time it was Mulder who got excited.
"Oh God. Dance with me, Scully." Mulder said as he suddenly stood up from where he had been sitting for the past hour and a half and extended his hand towards her.
Scully just stared at his hand at first and then looked up at him in surprise. "What?"
"It's my favorite Elvis song. Please, dance with me. Before it's over. Please." He pleaded with her.
"Mulder, we're suppose to be on a stakeout, we can't afford to let our guard down." When Scully said that, she actually had been referring to the stakeout they were on. But then Scully realized that there was a definite double meaning to that statement as well. She had to be careful. She knew that slow dancing with Fox Mulder to that particular Elvis song would be incredibly dangerous. And she had always been very careful to never do anything with her partner that might cause her to let her guard down. Her will power was strong when it came to a lot of things, but it wasn't that strong.
"Oh Scully, that place has been dead for the past two days. What are the odds that something important is actually going to happen in the two and a half minutes it takes for this song to end? C'mon," he said as he took her hand and pulled her to her feet and towards him quickly.
He had caught Scully by surprise and had pulled her so quickly that she hadn't been able to control where her body ended up. Consequently, she stumbled and ran right into him. She looked up at him in surprise and their eyes met. The mood quickly became tense between them and Scully swallowed thickly. She became aware of many things at once: the nearness of him, his warmth, the way his aftershave smelled…she felt herself becoming slightly dizzy. Then, Mulder readjusted them by taking a slight step back, putting his hand on her lower back and taking her free hand in his. Scully placed her other hand on his shoulder. They began to dance slowly.
Although Scully wasn't quite as close to him as she had been a second ago, she still felt a little dizzy. Her heart was beating fast. She felt awkward. She loved being this close to him and being able to touch him like this. Usually she only had the luxury of touching him when he was physically hurt or when he needed emotional comforting. But at the same time, she couldn't bring herself to look up at his face. She knew he was looking down at her and she was terrified at what her eyes would reveal to him if she met his gaze. Instead, she found herself inching closer to him as they moved back and forth, until all of a sudden his chest was right in front of her and she casually rested her cheek against it, closing her eyes. Mulder let go of her hand and wrapped both arms around her. Scully let out a silent breath and slipped her arms around his waist, melting into him, inhaling deeply, taking his scent into her lungs. She suppressed the moan she could feel rising in her throat. Scully could hear his heart beating in his chest and she could swear that it was beating almost as fast as hers was. Oh Lord… She thought, what are we doing? We can't do this, not now… But although everything in Scully's mind was screaming at her to stop what was going on, her body just was not willing to listen this time. Scully knew that Mulder was responding in the same way and, suddenly, that thought gave her the courage to finally look up at him. When she did she was surprised at what she saw. Mulder was gazing down at her with a look that was filled with unmistakable desire and longing. The animalistic, uncontrollable kind which, she was sure, was mirrored back at him in her own face. Still, underneath the lustful gaze, she could see that he was worried…worried of the exact same things she was.
But right then, in that moment, with the two of them at their most intimate and Elvis in the background…suddenly Scully didn't give a damn about protocol and Bureau policy. All she did give a damn about what the fact that she wanted this man, who she cared so deeply for, to kiss her very, very badly. Scully was actually the one who made the first move as she tilted her head upwards, leaned in towards him and lowered her eyelids slightly. She felt his hand slide up her back as he gently held her closer to him. "Scully…" he whispered silently as he slowly lowered his face towards hers.
Mulder hesitated for a moment when their lips were almost touching. Scully let out a nearly inaudible moan of frustration. She could feel his hot breath in her face and she felt the tension building between them with each excruciating second that passed. He licked his lips and swallowed hard. Scully knew what he was thinking. Five years…five years of a partnership and a friendship that was unlike anything either of them had ever experienced before. Five years of forbidden longing and secret fantasies and anticipation of this exact moment. Five years of waiting for something that would very soon become a definite reality with just the slightest movement from either one of them. Scully knew what he was thinking about and she knew why he was hesitating. But that didn't change the fact that what he was doing was slowing driving her to the brink of insanity. It suddenly occurred to Scully that maybe what Mulder needed was a direct sign of consent from her. A kind of rite of passage that gave him unquestionable permission to follow through with kissing her. Scully had an idea and prayed to God that Mulder would get the message and that it wouldn't spoil the mood with confusion. Scully slowly licked her lips and whispered in as low and sultry a voice as she could muster, "besame…."
Scully swore she saw a look of complete recognition cross Mulder's face as his tense and worried expression relaxed and a small smile appeared on his parted lips. Then, very gently, even more gently than Scully had ever dreamed, he lowered his face the rest of the way and softly touched his lips to hers.
When they finally made contact, a tiny, involuntary sound escaped Scully's lips and her breathing automatically quickened. She suddenly felt very weak and woozy. She knew that if Mulder hadn't been holding her up, she would have lost her ability to stand and would have sank right down to the floor. She had waited for so long and dreamed so often about this moment that suddenly all the feelings that she had denied herself and kept bottled up for the past five years came spilling out inside of her. Suddenly, her hands were up around his neck and in his hair as the kiss deepened. The kiss was passionate, but very slow and sensuous as their lips slowly moved over one another's, savoring the feel of the other's mouth on theirs. They both seemed content to keep the kiss within the rhelm of what it was right then, in that moment, rather than hungrily escalating the kiss into something they both knew they weren't quite ready for yet. It was wonderful and beautiful and thoroughly expressive of the forbidden love they had both secretly felt but couldn't admit to anyone before…not even to themselves.
Even though it seemed like an eternity since they had first started dancing, in reality, only about two minutes had passed and they were only just nearing the end of the song they had been dancing to. When Mulder and Scully had stopped moving, they had stopped with Mulder's back facing the window they had only moments before been sitting in front of.
All of a sudden the loud sound of a gunshot and shattered glass filled the room. The bullet hit Mulder directly in the back. Mulder broke the kiss as he screamed out in pain and began to sink to the floor, taking Scully with him as he fearfully clung to her.
"MULDER!!!" Scully screamed. "Oh my God…" Scully held onto him tightly as she tried as best she could to slowly lower him to the floor. Mulder was losing a lot of blood, and fast. Scully pressed the palm of her hand to the wound, attempting to stop the bleeding. With her other hand, she frantically searched for her cell phone. "Damnit!" She swore as she realized that it was in her trenchcoat which was draped on a chair about 10 feet away from her. Unwilling to take her hand away from Mulder's wound, she quickly searched Mulder for his phone. Luckily, he had it clipped to his belt. She pulled it off and quickly dialed 911. Scully was on the verge of tears, she could hardly think straight. When the 911 operator finally answered, Scully screamed a frantic, "HELP ME!!" into the phone. The operator tried to tell her to calm down. Scully quickly tried to gather her thoughts as she tried to think of the address to the apartment complex where they were and relayed this information to the operator. "Please hurry, I have an agent down and he is in immediate need of medical assistance. HURRY!" Scully pleaded and hung up the phone.
She turned her attention back to Mulder who looked as though he were about to lose consciousness. Scully gently tapped his face, "Mulder…can you hear me? It's OK, Mulder, you're going to be fine, help is on the way." It wasn't until Scully began to talk to him that she realized that she was crying. Tears began to stream down her face. She pulled Mulder as close to her as she possibly could and gently rocked him back and forth. "Shhhh…" she whispered shakily, "you're gonna be OK, Mulder, I'm not going to let anything happen to you. Just hang in there, please…" Scully began to sob silently as she rocked him.
Mulder slowly turned his face so that he was looking up at her. Then, he shakily reached up with one of his hands and touched the tears that were flowing down her cheeks. Mulder opened his mouth to speak, and in a weak, choked voice, he whispered, "Don't…cry…" and made his best attempt to smile up at her.
Scully immediately understood his reference to their previous conversation and smiled through her tears and gave him a soft chuckle. She took the hand he had touched her face with and gently kissed the backs of his fingers. She gazed down at him lovingly and without even really realizing what she was saying, choked out, "I love you…"
At first Scully was stunned at her words and became very frightened when Mulder seemed to be even more stunned than she was. But then, his features softened and a soft smile of pure happiness appeared on his face; and for one, brief moment, he seemed to be without pain. Scully smiled back at him, leaned down and gently kissed his lips. Then Mulder closed his eyes and lost consciousness…
