Logan's Search

by William F. Nolan

Logan and Jessica are about to become proud parents again! The Earth has finally been stabilized. The Thinker has been destroyed, Sandmen no longer exist, and the mandatory 'Death at 21' law has long been forgotten. Food and medicine, however, are still in great demand! There are no rulers in this new Earth. Each 'colony' functions as a group, a single unit, deciding by majority vote what matters most to them.

Logan's colony is soon visited by a man from the Chicago Complex. His colony is in desperate need for food and supplies. He asks Logan's Old Washington Complex for aid and they agree to help him, provided they get medical supplies in return. The man agrees and Logan offers to fly the supplies out to Chicago so that he may bring his colony back the much needed medicine.

However, shortly into the trip, Logan's ship is captured by an alien spacecraft from another world. It seems these aliens have been looking for Logan ever since he helped bring an end to his computer controlled planet. These aliens monitor parallel worlds and are concerned that these duplicate planets be kept in balance for the sake of the entire universe. However, there is now an imbalance in the galaxy due to the fact that Logan's Earth is now 'stabilized' and free. The parallel Earth's society is not!

The aliens instruct Logan that he must be teleported to this other Earth, and destroy that planet's 'Thinker' so that the two worlds can once again be equal and balanced. He only has fourteen days to accomplish the mission, since this is the amount of time that the aliens can keep the 'gateway' to both worlds open. If he fails, the doorway will close and Logan will never return to the Earth he once knew, to the woman he loves and to the child he may never meet. The aliens do not give Logan a choice of accepting the mission or not. He must do this for them and for the sake of the universe, or die.

In order to place Logan on this parallel Earth, they abduct the other planet's Logan, who is 20 years old and a hugely popular Sandman. They alter Logan's appearance so that he looks identical to the younger Logan. They complete the transformation by giving him a brand new shiny red lifeclock in working order! Logan is told that he may bump into his old friends, Francis 7, Jessica 6 and Doyle 10. He may even encounter Evans 9 and Gant, the two 'rouge' Sandmen from Crazy Horse!! But concerning the 'other' Jessica, he must make no contact with her at all! He is told that the other Logan and her have never met on this world and must never meet! Concerning the location of the Thinker, the only clue they can give Logan is that he will soon be participating in a strange ritual on this planet called 'Godbirth', along with his friend and partner Francis 7. Maybe through this strange ritual for Sandmen, he will be able to find it! With these final instructions, Logan is then transported to the other Earth to begin his mission.

Will Logan find and destroy the Thinker in time on this mirrored world? Just what is 'Godbirth' and does it -in fact- exist? Will Logan decide to pay a night time visit to this other world's Jessica? Will Francis be a friend or foe to Logan?

And just how will Logan feel having to don a Sandman's outfit once again? Will he be able to bring himself to hunting and 'homering' down another innocent runner??

The answers await in the thrilling trilogy finale... Logan's Search!
