They have a hard chitinous exoskeleton, which serves as natural protection and armor. It is not of one drab color or bright color. The color of their bodies are similar to iridescence, where the view and direction of light and reflection changes. The color is also influenced by the individual's mood and temperature, as well as weather and other factors.
Their eyes are located on opposite sides of their heads, slightly forward, giving them total peripheral vision, which does not hinder their forward vision.
Their feet split into two toes - a larger and a smaller - with some extremely limited manipulative ability.
The protruding spinal ridge, more prominent in older age, gives them a slightly hunchbacked appearance. Because of this spinal ridge, some think that they were a winged species at one time. There is no written or otherwise known source of record that they ever were. It would have to had been in their pre-history era.
Kaferians revere the sanctity of life in all species of lifeforms, as well as flora and fauna. Hence their being strict vegetarians. They honor the natural world with respect and reverence.
Kaferians are well known as a peace promoting race, quite capable of taking care of themselves. They have been known to defend the helpless, and on occassion, they have intervened in a crisis. They do not tolerate oppression and abuse.
Kaferians are not fierce, aggressive or without honor. They are not warriors, cheaters, liars, deceitful, scheming, spies, profit mongers, conquerors, oppressors, or antagonists.
For commercial and public buildings, a synthethic equivalent of the secretion is used that enables them to build structures several hundred feet tall. All buildings are environmentally compatible. No toxic or caustic substances are permitted to be used.
Since they are terraforming engineers, Kaferians know how to adapt a plant species to a new world and genetically alter it if necessary. They also export many bio-engineered plants that have been modified for the demanding terraformed climates and conditions.
Kaferians do not genetically engineer animals. This would contradict their attitude toward reverence for life. They only genetically engineer plants, mainly for terraforming projects.
Kaferians were not founding Federation members, but they have been made charter members after a lengthy and thorough investigation by UFP officials, clearing them of the above charges, and have been a staunch ally for over 200 years.
Although Kaferians have membership in UFP, there are no Kaferian nationals in Starfleet. They prefer to be a private, peaceful civilization, yet not isolate themselves from societies of other civilizations.
