FEDERATION STANDARD

A summary explanation:

Federation Standard is not English. Also, Federation Standard is not "Terran". It is the common language of the United Federation of Planets (UFP).

It may appear that this is merely a take on the "English" version, but it is not. Terrans perceive it to be similar to English, as Vulcans perceive it to be similar to the Vulcan language, as Klingons perceive it to be similar to their language, and so on.

For Terrans, it favors the European style of English, but is not solely based on any particular version of English. It is influenced by the many and varied dialects distributed throughout Earth. How is this accomplished?

The Universal Translator (UT) device incorporates all languages of Earth into the "Planetary Standard", and becomes one common understandable language. This method is used by many, if not all, UFP member nations for their local planetary languages. This new language, "Planetary Standard", becomes a global community language which retains and promotes the individual intonations, accents, inflections, drawls, etc. that is indicative of the speaker's heritage. This infers that the speaker is not just Terran, but "of Earth". The same would be true on other planets.

Without the Universal Translator (UT) to compose a language into Federation Standard, a Vulcan would not be able to understand a local dialect from Earth, and vice versa. Even on Earth, the UT is most helpful. It is a common occurrence that UTs are used on planets for translating local languages into the Planetary Standard, and then, as required, into Federation Standard. Examples would include news feeds, information, education, and entertainment programmes, etc.

Since the formation of the United Federation of Planets (UFP), these concepts have been incorporating the languages of the member nations of the UFP. In turn, Federation Standard is becoming a galactic community language. All of the rules and concepts of translating into the Federation Standard language are applied to the new languages of member and non-member nations as they are learned. The members of the galactic community are able to understand each other when communicating, especially at First Contact, reducing hostility and promoting peace and harmony.
