Finally a Past
A solitary figure slipped up to the compound in the dead of night. Any small sound could be heard and security had been increased. Still, Gambit could tell they were preparing to leave. Large trucks pulled away, undoubtedly carrying Sinister's lab equipment, and his experiments. Gambit pushed the thoughts away that threatened to surface. He had a job to do.
He leapt onto the roof, knowing he'd be setting off motion detectors. He continued until he heard a guard trying to sneak up on him. He twirled around and yanked out his staff. As he started to fight, Ororo landed next to him, bringing a deep fog with her. The two were used to fighting side-by-side, and battled Sinister's minions.
Meanwhile, inside Wolverine used his heightened senses to hunt down Sinister and Jean. Wolverine came upon Sinister just as he was getting into a helicopter. Logan jumped at Sinister and pinned him to the ground. He placed his claws an inch from Sinister's face and demanded Jean be freed. However, even once she was, Wolverine wasn't done.
"Tell me the truth. Did you make it all up? Or were they really my family?" Wolverine had to know, once and for all.
"The Chacers? I'm afraid I can't answer that question." Sinister's face was incredibly calm. "They could be, but anyone could be."
"I think you'd better make yourself more clear, bub, before I start taking pieces out of you." Logan shook with rage. The building around him gave an ominous rumble.
"Wolverine! We have to leave! The building is going to collapse! We have to get out, now!" Jean yelled.
"Tell me."
"I won't."
Wolverine gritted his teeth. He knew he could kill Sinister right here and end his plague of the earth. But then he'd never know. Mr. Sinister knew the truth, and he might be the only person on earth who did. To ever have a chance at his past...
Wolverine jumped up and grabbed Jean. They ran out to where Ororo was waiting for them, and she lifted into the air and away.
The lake's surface was smooth and calm, without even a ripple. So unlike Logan's soul.
Without a word Ororo slipped an arm around Logan's shoulders. She pulled him close to her and held him. The summer's day was bright and warm: sunny and innocent. Logan closed his eyes and listened to the birds sing. Had he ever been young enough to sit in awe at Nature's splendor? What kind of a childhood had he had? Had he ever experienced the innocence that he now longed for? Would he ever know?
He slowly turned to Ororo, his soul full of unanswered questions. She hugged him tightly and whispered her love, as his tears finally started to flow.
