Part Five
By Christine Demerath
"Got ya!" Belle tackled Remy after about another half-hour of hard running. Remy cried out in pain and surprise. "What's the matter?" Belle removed herself from on top of Remy.
"Nothing, just landed on something."
"Remy, you're bleeding. Are you okay?"
"Oui, said it's nothing."
"We better be getting back."
"Yeah, the sun is goin` start ta set soon." Belle helped Remy to his feet.
"Remy, do you know how to get back?"
"Don't worry we get home." Remy took her hand in his and started off.
"Remy? Remy, where are you?" Henri looked up the stairwell and proceeded to climb the stairs. "Remy, you in your room, chile?" Nothing. "Remy!?!" He called alarmed, with all that was taking place, Henri didn't know what to think. The assassins might have taking him, but how would they have known about Remy. Henri calmed himself, "Maybe da boy just out back." He headed for the garden. Remy was nowhere insight, but he did find Remy's shoes, just out of the swamp. "Damn you, boy." Getting to his feet he quickly went into the house changed clothing and when to look for Remy.
"Remy, are you sure we are going the right way?" It had been almost an hour and they had no idea if they were going in circles or not. It was too dark to tell where they where, even thought the moon showed brightly. She looked over to Remy, who had been leaning on her for sometime. His face had turned pale and he was starting to drag his feet. "Are you okay, maybe we rest?"
"No, we gotta get home. Jean goin` be mad."
"Who's he?"
"My pappa."
"Oh," she looked at his pain striking face again. "I can bandage you leg if ya want, it will dull the hurtin`."
"Will it take long?"
"Non, do ya have a bandana?"
"Non."
"I need something ta tie around your leg."
"Here," he slipped his shirt off and handed it to her.
"You sure? It's getting cold, and…" he sentence faded.
"Oui." She quickly tore the shirt in two long pieces and a small one. She quickly cleaned the wound with the small piece, as Remy tried his hardest not the scream and only whimpers. Then she tied one of the longer pieces over the wound to stop more swamp water from getting into it and tied the other piece a little higher, but much tighter.
"I'm sorry."
"That's okay," all color drained from his face. "Who teach ya dat?"
"My father."
"Better tell him it don't work."
"Maybe not, but it will heal faster."
"Thanks," he kissed her on the cheek and got up. "We better start goin` again."
"Yeah, they're going to get worried." Belle answered blankly and stood still for a second looking at Remy.
"I'm sorry, but she is nowhere to be found." The man repeated, quite scared for his life.
"I WANT MY DAUGHTER FOUND NOW!" his fist hit the table as this shout rang through the halls. "If Jean-Luc has her he is to me captured at all costs and brought to me immediately. Is that under stood. I want him alive and I want his son as well." He growled.
"Sir, we are in the middle of a crisis, we can't aff----." Marquis knife priced the man's throat.
"Remy, ya hear that?"
"Non," he'd heard it. "Let's go dis way." He turned on Belle's arm going the opposite way of the sound. Belle looked at him, "Okay, maybe I heard it."
"Let's go see what it is."
"Non."
"Why?"
"Not safe."
"If you're so sure what it is then tell me." She had stopped and Remy had no chose then to do the same, there was no way his weak body could drag her, he was taking all he had to stay standing himself. The sound was getting closer.
"It's a alligator." Belle listened again.
"Remy, it stop callin`."
"Ya see it?"
"Non, come on let's get going." She started off almost running.
"Non, stop!" yelled to her.
"What!?"
"Listen," there was more then one. "There's more, we gotta be careful. Stay dere I'm coming. Don't more."
"Remy?"
"Oui."
"How we getting outta here?"
"Easy all we gotta do is move slowly." He flashed her a smile as he reached her and stepped into the moonlight.
"How you know?"
"A friend told me, and I've been in one of these situations before. Don't worry they afraid of humans, they won't bother us if we don't bother them, `kay?"
"Oui, but why where they coming toward us."
"I don't know," then it hit him. "Shit, they after me." He leaned up against a tree on a solid area of land.
"Your leg?"
"Oui," he looked at the wound. "Ya better go ahead."
"Non, I'll stay with you." A hissing sound came from the darkness only a few paces in-fount of them, followed be the sound of swishing water as the alligator emerged from the water. Remy pushed Belle behind him.
"Get up the tree," he commanded.
"But what about ya." She began to climb the low tree.
"I'm coming." There was another rustling to the right, Remy's head snapped in the direction to see nothing. "Ya up yet?"
"Oui, hurry." Trying to jump to the branch Remy fell.
"I can't, my leg hurt to bad," he replied weakly. Fear struck his eyes as he glanced at Belle and back to the gator. The gator came closer to Remy, but was still about 5 feet away. A dagger flew into the gator's eye and it released a horrible sound. Like lighting a human figure darted over to Remy picked him up and looked up into the tree, and stretched his arm out to the girl. Remy couldn't see the man's face through the darkness, but could recognize the voice.
"Hurry," he called to Belle. Taking his hand she leaped from the tree and to the ground.
"Henri?" Remy fought the darkness.
"I'm here, chile." Remy's body relaxed, Henri glanced toward Belle. "Move girl, that gator goin` be mad when he finds out what hit `m."
After a half an hour walk Henri had found Belle's home. Belle had been silent the whole walk back. "Will he be okay?" She turned around to face Henri and the still sleeping Remy after climbing a little bank.
"Oui, now go, your father is going to be upset."
It would take them another fifteen minutes to get back to home when Remy woke up. "Henri?" Remy looked up to his brother .
"Oui?"
"Can I get down?"
"Non."
"But…"
"Non."
"Where Belle?"
"At her home."
"Is she okay?"
"Oui." A silence engulfed the two.
Henri carefully set Remy on this bed. "I'll be back in a minute." Henri went down to the kitchen and called Tantie Mattie. Minutes later Henri came back up stairs. "Remy, Tantie can't make it, she's…. busy. So she tell me what ta do for now." Remy nodded, his face pale from loss of blood. Henri moved to clean the wound on Remy's leg.
"Belle already done dat." Remy objected, he didn't want to have go through the pain.
"Yes, but it needs to be done again. Don't worry I'll be gentle." After a while Henri finished and went down stairs to make something for Remy to eat. The whole time there was silence between the two.
Well, that's it for now, sorry, it took so long, this one just like a lot of others could have been out weeks before, but because of my lazyness and other reasons it wasn't. Sorry. Comments? Suggestions? Anything? Flames? (Okay, I really don't want them, but if that's the only thing I get, so be it.) Peace! mystiquecd@hotmail.com
