Reunion

Part 3

Christine Demerath

"Professor, I think we need to talk," a beautiful red-head announced.

"What is there to talk about, Jean?" he tried to avert the subject, but not as smoothly as he would have liked.

"About what happened to you. It's been nearly a week and yet you avoid it as if it never happened." Jean scowled. "I'm getting sick of it, Charles. I want to help you, we all do, but you won't let us." She turned to face him.

"How Jean? There is no way to help," he turned away from her glance.

"I'll help you sort things out or call a physicist, but you do need help. You need to sort out your feelings and to get over your pain."

"I don't think I need a physicist, am I really that bad?"

"Yes," she whispered. "And I'm sorry, Charles. I'm so sorry." She headed for the doors.

"Jean?"

"Yes?"

"I know this is a lot to ask and I really don't want to, but would you?"

"Yes, I'd be honored. How about we start tomorrow?"

"That would be great and thank you, Jean," he smiled weakly.

"Charles, I'm going to start with how your feelings. I know this might seem a little silly, but I think it's important. So, how have you been holding up?"

"Jean, I don't really know what to say. It's hard to explain," he sighed, "I mean I feel so many different things. I'm not sure if I can take it much more."

"What do you mean, Professor... you can't take it anymore?" He was silent. "Professor may I look into you mind?"

"Jean, are you sure you want to do this?"

"It has to be done," she whispered. With that she entered his mind. "Charles it's so dark, no it's more like a thick fog," she sounded shocked. She continued down the misty hall, passing pictures and doors. The pictures where of people dear to him on the right side, but the left was full of memories that hunted him. As she move on she noticed that the pictures on the right stopped a little more then half way down, a few even lay on the floor face down. She passed them, for she saw a window at the end of the hall, with a scale on the sill. The pictures on the left extended to the end of the desolate hall. As she came closer to the picture she gasped. There was a battle field with bodies laying sparsely around. A voice of falling solider could be heard, but the words were to muffled to understand. Jean shuttered as she saw another body. It was a cut up so badly she couldn't even see the face, blood was everywhere. Whoever it was, was awfully young. She tuned away, just to see another body, but this one had much more affect on her. She would had screamed if her body would have let her, but all she could do is whisper, "No!" She fell to her knees and looked at the shattered body. It was the image of one of her best friends, Ororo. She wept silently, even though she know it wasn't real. After pulling herself together she stood, wiped her eyes, and moved farther into Xavier's mind. In the middle of the battle field stood a horrific monument. Jean, still tears in her eyes, walks up to it and rubs her fingers across the indents as she reads it to herself.

To all the men and women lost

In a war for freedom and rights

And for the X-Men lost trying

To save a world that will never Again be protected

Scott (Cyclops) Summers        Bishop        Remy (Gambit) Lebeau

Betsy (Pyslocke) Braddock    Rogue          Hank (Beast) McCoy

Jean (Phoenix) Grey Summers                  Logan (Wolverine)

She continued reading the names, as her heart leaped out of her chest trying to get oxygen. Then she saw her husband, Scott, lying there mutilated right in front of her. Not being able to control herself anymore, her mind returned to her body. Still not being able to breath she faints.

"Jean? Jean, honey are you all right?" she awoke to see Scott looking down at her. She throw her arms around him and kissed him long and hard.

"Scott, I love you," she whispered in his ear.

"I love you, too. What happened?"

"Nothing," she said reluctantly, but with a forcefulness and strong backing.

"Your lying, Jean," he pulled away from the embrace and looked at her face. "There is fear in those beautiful green eyes of yours."

"Nothing really, don't worry about it."

"Jean?"

"Okay, I saw something in Charles's mind, that's all I swear."

"Are you sure?"

"We'll talk more about it later. For now just hold me please," he did a she requested.

Hank watched them for a minuet and quietly closed the door. Then turning to Xavier. "So, Charles it seems as you had quite a day. Would you like to talk about it?"

"No, thank you, Hank," he looked up at him.

"Are you sure?"

"Quite."

"Okmolydocoly!" he smiled. "Well, let's get these tests done with and you can be on your way."

"Thank you."
