Recovery
Part Two
Tammy

Austin looked up at the window he was re-glazing and saw a man with a white face looking down at him. He also noticed that the man had a red diamond in the center of his forehead. The man smiled and the Texan fell off the ladder when he saw both rows of sharply pointed teeth revealed by that heartless smile. He looked up at the window and the man had vanished.

Then he was hit by an intense wave of fear from Remy. Austin scrambled to his feet and raced into the house believing that the man he saw was after the sleeping Cajun inside. He skidded to a halt in front of the open door to Remy’s room. Everything was as it should be, nothing was disturbed or missing. Remy was sound asleep in his bed.

Austin almost kicked himself when he realized his empathy had picked up on a dream Remy had been having. He frowned at the sleeping figure. He knew there was more to him than met the eye or the empath. That and the apparition he’d seen had something to do with whatever the Cajun had fled when he’d left Seattle.

Not wanting to be running into the house for more false alarms, Austin called to his dog to baby-sit the sick mutant. Into the bedroom trotted a large dog that was a cross between a husky and a timber wolf. “Git up there and guard ‘im,” Austin whispered to the animal.

The dog affectionately licked his cheek and jumped up on the bed. She lay down next to Remy facing the door. “Good girl,” Austin smiled and scratched behind her ears. Then he left to finish glazing the windows.

Later that afternoon, as Remy began to wake up, he felt someone or something lying on the bed next to him. “Mmm, not now chere, I sick,” he mumbled.

He was answered by a tongue licking his face.

Remy opened his red and black eyes and looked right into the blue ones of a timber wolf. The Cajun’s eyes widened in surprise and then, remembering that wolves are carnivores, apprehension. “Help! Austin, I’m gonna get eaten by a wolf!” he yelled.

“Yore not goin’ ta git eaten and she’s only half wolf,” Austin said as he pushed his hat back on his head.

“What’s she doin’ on my bed?” Remy demanded sitting up.

“Baby-sittin’,” the Texan drawled.

“Who?”

“You, boy,” Austin smiled.

The Cajun reddened and glared at him. Then he turned back to his bed-mate. “Hey you, get off,” he said pushing at the animal.

“Her name’s Ice and she won’t git off ‘til I tell ‘er to,” he said.

“Den c’n you tell her t’ get down,” Remy said becoming annoyed.

“Come ‘ere Ice,” Austin smiled and slapped his hip twice. Ice got up and jumped off the bed in one fluid motion. She trotted over by her master and sat down waiting for him to scratch her ears. “Ya hungry?” he asked burying his fingers in her thick coat and scratching her ear.

“Yeah,” Remy replied streaching.

“Tam made some stuff she didn’ think would bother yore stomach. Ya wanna eat in the kitchen or in here?”

“Here, dat way I c’n lay down if I feel sick.”

“Be back in a bit.”
