Rachel White was the youngest child of seven children, with four older brothers and two older sisters.  As the baby of the family, she was relegated the most menial tasks, and though it was all done in play, she was the constantly subject of her elder siblings' jokes.  She dreamed of becoming someone important, to show her family what she was worth.  The White family suffered a terrible loss during the Second and Third Dark Wars, in which Rachel lost three of her four brothers, including her eldest brother Richard, a leader of the resistance during the Second Dark War.
After the devastating loss of three young sons, Rachel's father Colin decided that the family should move away.  Rachel, in her mid-teens, refused to go.  She understood her parents' grief at losing three sons, and she felt the pain of losing three brothers.  Rachel had joined the army and was going to honor the memories of her brothers by following in their footsteps.  Her father became furious, refusing to allow any more of his children go off to war, especially his youngest daughter.  Rachel remained adamant, and after convincing her mother of her sincere desire to serve, the White family packed up and moved away from Angel's Crest, and Rachel reported to the Southern Regiment.  The regiment commander had served with Richard before he died, and he took notice when the youngest White reported for duty as his command.  And so began Rachel White's military career.
She came into her own during the Fourth Dark War, as one of the soldiers captured by Arkhane and imprisoned in Castle Ravensong.  The ranking officers of the command were all dead, and the loyal soldiers who had fought through possibly all three Dark Wars were quickly becoming embittered.  Stepping up to the leadership role, Rachel masterminded an escape in which the remaining forty-six soldiers were all freed.  They escaped successfully into the mountains and headed away, never looking back.
The small band of soldiers had taken residence in a small village north of Angel's Crest when years later, Paige and co. passed through with Phytian forces to regain Angel's Crest.  Rachel, then a barmaid, overheard their plans and revealed her identity to Captain d'Mitri, who was shocked that some of her men were still alive.  Rachel rounded up her men, and though some refused to return, she was able to provide her captain with a small platoon of experienced veterans.
Following the war, the old soldiers who survived chose to retire from service.  They were honored as national heroes, and with the southern regiment in need of a commander, Milan appointed White to the position.  The two became good friends afterward, and Rachel grew to be one of Milan's most trusted and reliable officers.
