In the Beginning...
Wanda Maximoff and her brother, Pietro (Quicksilver), were raised in the Eastern European land of Transia by the gypisies Django and Marya Maximoff. But it would be years later when they discovered their true parentage.Wanda and her twin were born to another gypsy, Magda, and a mutant called Magnus. Fearing his display of mutagenic power, Magda fled from the man who would one day be known as Magneto. She took refuge in the citadel of Wundagore, home to the High Evolutionary and his evolved animal-men. There she delivered her babies with the help of Bova, a woman evolved from a cow. Magda left the children in Bova's care and fled into the bitter cold where she met her demise.
Bova sought a home for the children and found an American couple, Robert and Madeline Frank (who, unbeknowst to her were WWII superheroes, Miss America and Whizzer). Madeline herself was with child, but both she and the baby died during the birthing. Bova attempted to pass the twins off as Robert's, but he fled nearly insane with grief.
The twins eventually discovered they were mutants. Wanda could cause strange and unpredictable things to occur just by gesturing. This "hex" power, however, was unstable and she could not control what would happen.
When an angry mob attacked Wanda's gypsy family, Pietro's mutant gift of speed spared them from their parent's fate. They lived off the land until Wanda's power accidentally set a cottage to flame. The villagers would have killed them both, but salvation arrived in the person of Magneto.
