I was hatched 252 years ago in an isolated cave deep in the tropical rainforest. This is where I grew and learned the lore of my dragon ancestors from the beginning of time. As I matured, I was taught many spells, and, on one of the happiest days of my existence, I learned to fly. Words cannot begin to express the feeling one gets, soaring through the skies, propelled by powerful wings. I consider flight to be one of the greatest gifts our creator gave to dragonkind. The joy that can be derived from the simplicity of flight is probably unfathomable by you land-bound creatures. Let me only say this, that it surpasses all that you could imagine in your wildest dreams.
But I digress. Another of the joys, but also one of my greatest sorrows, was the day I, along with my brothers and sisters, left the cave of our birth, never to return again. It was a happy day because we were all going out to seek our fortunes, as it were, in the wide world. But this day was also tinged with sadness because it was prompted by the death of our mentor, who had remained with us since the day our eggs graced the earth. I sat for a while and watched as my brothers and sisters flew away over the horizon, each following the pull of their hearts to their greatest dreams. It was not until the last tail had disappeared into the setting sun that I finally took to the air towards my own horizon and the land that lay beyond it.
I took my time while the call was less insistent, pausing to swim in the clear blue lakes and rivers that I came across in my travels, watching the fish, and generally just enjoying the wilderness. On this journey, our mentor had warned us, we were not to go near any of the human cities, as they had not learned to overcome their fear of us. It was emphasized that those of us who did venture near would probably not live to see the rest of the world, because these small creatures, though they seemed harmless, were very ferocious when confronted with something they did not understand, and reacted violently. I know you have all learned better now, because why else would you be reading my story?
