"In time he will, in this reviewer's opinion, be listed alongside King, Barker, Koontz, and McCammon." -- Brian Keene, in a review of BLACK WALLS, RED GLASS in WEIRD TIMES #13 ... Author's Notes: The title BLACK WALLS, RED GLASS was inspired by publisher Bruce Gehweiler, whose initial suggestion was BLACK WALLS, RED SPECTACLES. The "black walls" part came from an interview with me in the magazine RANDOM REALITIES, where Bruce read that the walls in my office were painted black. RED SPECTACLES came from a story by that title which appeared in TERMINAL FRIGHT magazine. After altering the title a bit, I then set out to write two new stories to go along with it -- BLACK WALLS, and RED GLASS. The novella THE RED MACHINE was written in the late 80's, and had never been submitted previously. The illustrations and cover are by yours truly ; I also did the index page art and first page art on the Necropolitan Press web site -- seeing as how I've been asked to identify the artist. I've also been asked what those two pieces "mean". Wish I knew! I turned their creation over entirely to my subconscious. But there was a bit more method to my madness in the cover for BLACK WALLS, RED GLASS (shown above). Seeing as there are three stories, there are three eyes in the picture...three larvae forming...and the doll head rests on a tripod. The collection is very much about seeing beyond the veil of our daily reality -- again, reflected in the three doll eyes, and the one eye peeking through the broken pane of glass. |
