When the sun and the earth play together...

Ghidron vs. Mazona

The sun of Planet Earth crept slowly over the horizon of the South China Sea. Tiny golden red rays of heat swept back and forth over the rolling waves. The never ending ocean reflected the beautiful light, and the recently dark waves glittered warm pastels. High above the water, clouds began to appear out of the navy blue sky. And far in the distance the high towers and busy streets of Hong Kong.

"How bout' this heat wave eh'?" John William Pepper, called "J.W." by his friends, slapped his knee in a sickeningly South Texas fashion. "Oh yes, Jaydubblya, I can't believe how hot it's been," his wife, Mary was fanning herself frantically with a Chinese newspaper. The two Americans had come down to Asia on a vacation this year after Mary Pepper insisted that if they weren't going to one of those nice little towns in the orient with all those funny little people, then why go on vacation at all? Hong Kong was merely a pit stop on their long flight up to a small island off the coast of China.

"I don't beeeeelieve this!" JW muttered, finally giving in to his urge to take off his hat and fan his sweating face with it. "It's even hotta' here than in Texas!" In disgust he spat out a large chunk of the chewing tobacco wedged between his jaw and cheek. The overweight American man groaned once again about the weather then sat down.

Little did the two loud Texans sitting just outside a Hong Kong airport know that the heat of the summer was actually because not once in the past millenium had the planet been so close to the sun in its orbit. And that sun, a huge burning ball of galactic gas millions of miles away from Texas, was unconsciously pumping an incredible amount of ultra violet radiation into a the beautiful sea near China.

Deep below the ocean, a huge kelp bed swung lazily back and forth. The soft brown stalks moving with the water. Deep below that was a thin layer of sand covering a huge golden sea animal. It was known as Ghidron by the ancient Venusians before they were wiped out. Ghidron was the first of the great death dragons created by the inhabitants of Planet X for their war against the rest of the solar system. Before long the Venusians captured the great demon with the combined might of all their armies. Then the creature was banished to Earth, where it was destined to sleep forever in a world much less plentiful with Ghidron's main power source: sunlight.

Down in the abnormally hot ocean surrounding this bed of kelp, a giant octopus rolled lazily over the sand. Its sticky arms waved gently in the current, like thin red flames. The creature flapped its eye lids in a frustrated manner. Suddenly a single finger the size of a limousine twitched slightly. The aquatic mollusk above it blasted away under cover of an ink stream.

Slowly, one by one, five more fingers moved, then two opposable thumbs. Lastly, two huge golden palms raised upwards out of the sand towards the sun.

The sea sure is nice today, thought Mary Pepper. She calmly admired how gentle the shining waves looked under the blinding sun and sky. Then the gentle waves far towards the horizon lifted up-soaring and splashing far to high for a natural phenomenon. As the water dripped away, Mary fell backwards, her head shaking uncontrollably left to right, silently declaring to the world, "No, this isn't possible-No!" Noticing the shaking of his wife's head, JW followed her gaze out to the horizon.

"HOT DAMN!!!" he bellowed, "WHAT DA' HELL IS DAT'?" Ghidron swept his reptilian nose up and then down again, absorbing the beautiful sunlight all around him. The two rows of long spines running down his back seemed almost to gouge holes out of the sky. Ghidron should have found the sun's radiation on Earth too low to awaken him, even with it this close. But that was before the ozone was destroyed. The golden horn adorning his snout began to throb with a golden glow.

Throughout history various species of animal have battled each other for one reason. Not for survival or food or mates, but for the one thing that drives the humans' economy-greed. Bot not the greed for money, the greed things have for territory. The basic need everything has to own something-to control something. And by awakening from his thousand year slumber, Ghidron woke the territoriality of another creature.

The ground along the south shore of Hong Kong rumbled menacingly. Under all the layers of rock and cement on the urban streets above, there was a mammoth underground cave, a cave housing the last of a certain order of animal. This beast had been seen only once before by human eyes. A European diver had once found a hole in the nearby sea bed years ago. That hole led to a narrow tunnel which emptied out in the den of the behemoth. Not sure what he was looking at at first, the young man had passed out when he realized he was observing a sleeping animal, one 400 feet tall. Trying to say amazing, but still in awe, the diver could only mutter "Mazona." The creature had lime green skin identical in texture to burned wood. Its eyes would have been unnaturally large had they been open. Otherwise, the animal quite closely resembled Godzilla. It was a very close relative of the genus gojirasaurus. In essence, the animal was Godzilla's "brother". However Mazona had gotten his large size because of his specie's natural evolution. And because of evolving near natural gas deposits, Mazona could also breath ignited gas at his opponents. With a sudden shriek Mazona's eyes snapped open for the first time in years-someone was invading his personal space.

Ghidron had begun to move towards the tall buildings of inland Hong Kong. The busyness of the world on the shore amused him, and he wanted to test his instinctive skills of destruction. Once ashore, the large horn on his muzzle began to glow so brightly it hurt the eyes of all the running individuals who saw it. Then the horn slashed in a downward stroke and sliced off the top floors of an apartment building like it was jello. Suddenly the ground behind him blew apart in a huge dust explosion. Out crawled a scaled green reptile the likes of which Ghidron had never before seen.

Mazona opened his jaws wide and bellowed a deafening SCREeeeeeEEEONK!!!!towards the slightly bigger creature that had invaded his turf. While Ghidron was still curiously examining Mazona, the brother of the king took a deep breath, then expelled intense flames towards his opponent. These didn't even seem to deter Ghidron, but merely caused him to grow offensive.

The death dragon suddenly sprang towards his opponent with a speed belying his mass. The impact of this leap carried both animals 100 meters back, with Ghidron on top in a tackle. Mazona reached his head up and sank his sharp teeth into Ghidron's left arm. Although golden blood began to trickle out of the death dragon's wounds, Ghidron continued to pin Godzilla's brother down. Now frantic, Mazona stretched his arms to his sides-exposing long folded membranes behind them. In an instant two gargantuan bat wings blasted out of Mazona's back, then carried him out of Ghidron's grasp.

Still determined, Ghidron leaned his head forward and breathed a mighty puff through his nose. Suddenly energy beams shaped like yellow lightening bolts blasted out of his muzzle horn by the dozen. Mazona caught the blast full bore and fell back to the Earth putting a crater in the street the size of a few neighborhoods. The green reptile lay panting and bleeding slightly at the mouth. Ghidron strided up closer to Mazona, pondering how to finish him off when a thick green tail swung out at Ghidron's knees with the force of many hurricanes. The death dragon fell face first into a viscous right punch of Mazona's.

Instantly both monsters got to their feet, snarling like wolves. Just than a cloud passed in front of the sun, momentarily causing freezing pains all over Ghidron's skin. After a quick glance at the recently risen sun, Mazona got an idea.

As soon as the cloud passed Ghidron lowered his stance, preparing for another of his deadly leap-tackles. But this time Mazona had prepared, just as the death dragon leapt forward Mazona leapt upwards, propelling himself with his wings. The death dragon passed harmlessly underneath and smashed face first into a building.

Without missing a beat, Godzilla's brother swooped down and gracefully lifted the golden reptile up by the shoulders, carrying him into the sky. Despite all of Ghidron's squirming, Mazona was still able to fly the beast away from the rising sun. The higher the pair flew, the quicker, and soon Mazona had broken the sound barrier.

After nearly an hour in flight, Mazona tired out and dropped the squealing death dragon into the cool ocean. In this part of the world, the sun had not yet risen above the horizon. Now powerless, Ghidron tumbled down hardly struggling.

Mazona returned to his Hong Kong, now fully awake and energetic. He defended his territories from all comers and took his rightful place among the daikaiju legends. Ghidron went into a deep hybernation from which he would never wake. That is of course, unless the occupants of the Seatopian city he landed on ever cared to have another go at destroying the world…

The End
