Commander Chakotay

Former Maquis Captain, and Voyager's current first officer, Chakotay is of Native American descent and is proud of his ancestry. However, when he was young, Chakotay rebelled against his heritage. Chakotay entered Starfleet Academy when he was fifteen years old. Chakotay dropped out of the academy and joined the Maquis, in order to protect his home world from the Cardassians. He was in command of a Maquis vessel that was swept into the far reaches of the Delta Quadrant while fleeing from a Cardassian vessel under Gul Evek's command. The Maquis vessel was thrown into the Delta Quadrant by an entity known as the Caretaker. The Maquis vessel was destroyed, and the Maquis crew was forced to join Voyager's Starfleet crew. Chakotay became the first officer of Voyager. Chakotay sometimes questions whether it would be better to use Maquis methods, instead of Starfleet methods, in the hostile Delta Quadrant. Chakotay often practices his people's vision quests with the help of his medicine bundle. Chakotay was once romantically involved with Seska. He was unaware that she was a Cardassian spy altered to look like a Bajoran. Seska's identity was discovered, and she joined the Kazon - Nistrim. Chakotay was temporarily assimilated by a group of former Borg drones in the Nekrit Expanse in 2373, and he was instrumental in repelling an invasion of dream aliens in mid - 2374.

Chakotay once admitted that he never thought Seven of Nine would last a single day outside of the Collective. He later told Captain Janeway that he was wrong. In 2375, Chakotay played a key role in uncovering a plan by Species 8472 to invade the Federation. With his help, the Voyager crew managed to convince Species 8472 to stop the invasion. In 2375, the U.S.S. Voyager was destroyed while attempting to reach home through a slip stream corridor. Chakotay, along with Ensign Kim, made it safely back to Earth in the Delta Flyer. Fifteen years later, Chakotay helped Harry alter the timeline in order to save Voyager and her crew.

One of Chakotay's role models was John Kelley, the commander of one of the very first Mars missions. Kelley and his ship were taken by a mysterious phenomenon. In 2376, the Voyager crew happened to encounter this phenomenon in the Delta Quadrant. Chakotay led an away team inside it with the Delta Flyer. When Chakotay refused to leave without the Mars module, despite the fact that the phenomenon was becoming unstable, the away team became stranded. They managed to repair the Flyer, however, and they returned safely to Voyager.

Seven of Nine once convinced Chakotay that Voyager was part of a huge conspiracy, and that Captain Janeway was involved. Chakotay became convinced, but he later discovered that Seven's theory was untrue.
