Dauntless

The Dauntless was designed and constructed by Arturis, an alien native to the Delta Quadrant. His people had been able to evade to Borg for years, but the Collective was closing in. They were hoping that Species 8472 would rid the galaxy of the Borg once and for all. However, the U.S.S. Voyager crew decided that 8472 was a larger threat than the Borg, and they teamed up with the Collective to defeat 8472. This allowed the Borg to continue to spread throughout the quadrant. Finally, they assimilated Arturis' people. Only twenty thousand managed to escape the homeworld before the Borg came.

Arturis was devastated, so he decided to avenge his world's assimilation by allowing the Borg to assimilate Voyager and its crew. He designed and built the U.S.S. Dauntless, a state of the art Starfleet vessel. The Dauntless was equipped with a quantum slipstream drive, which is sort of similar to a transwarp drive. It was a lean ship. It had no holodecks, replicators, or shuttlecraft, and it only had one transporter room. Using special holographic projectors, Arturis managed to create Starfleet panels inside the vessel. Once he was finished designing his fake Starfleet ship, he went to the Voyager crew. Since his people were experts at decoding languages and codes, he helped them decode a message that Starfleet Command had sent them months earlier. He changed the message, and made it appear as if the Federation had sent a vessel to bring the crew home faster.

When the Voyager crew discovered the Dauntless, they began to believe that they should abandon Voyager and use the Dauntless to reach the Alpha Quadrant. Captain Janeway and a few others remained skeptical, and they uncovered Arturis' plot. Most of the crew quickly beamed back to Voyager, but not before Arturis took the Dauntless into a slipstream corridor with Janeway and Seven still onboard. Using the fast slipstream drive, he traveled all the way back to his homeworld. In order to prevent the course from being changed, he destroyed the navigational controls. Voyager had also entered the slipstream corridor, but since it wasn't designed to use them, it could only remain in them for a short time. Chakotay and the crew attacked the Dauntless and retrieved Janeway and Seven. Once they had their missing crewmembers back, they turned Voyager around and headed back toward home. Voyager's slipstream drive stopped working after a short while, and the ship basically ended up in their previous position. However, they did manage to gain three hundred light years. The Dauntless was eventually assimilated by the Borg, as was Arturis.
