The Doctor

The Doctor is an Emergency Medical Hologram. Due to the death of the USS Voyager's medical staff in 2371, the Doctor has been active ever since. He is now Voyager's chief medical officer. Shortly after Voyager was lost in the Delta Quadrant, Kes became the Doctor's medical assistant. After Kes was forced to leave Voyager because her body was in a state of flux, Tom Paris became the Doctor's assistant. During the first two and a half years of Voyager's journey home, the Doctor could only function in sickbay and the holodeck. When Voyager was pulled back in time to 19th Century Earth, Henry Starling put a mobile emitter on the Doctor and held him hostage, The emitter allowed the Doctor to move anywhere he wanted, including places outside of the ship. The Doctor is programed with many medical references, and the experience of forty - seven of Starfleet's greatest Doctors. The Doctor is also equipped with medical knowledge from over three thousand different cultures. He is programed with over five million possible treatments. The Doctor once disobeyed Captain Janeway's orders when he refused to separate Tuvix into Tuvok and Neelix. Janeway separated Tuvix herself because the Doctor said he couldn't take a life. Shortly after Voyager was thrown into the Delta Quadrant, Janeway allowed the Doctor to control his programming. This meant that the Doctor could turn himself on and off. The Doctor still hasn't found a name for himself. In an alternate timeline visited by Kes, the Doctor chose the name van Gogh. The Doctor once programmed himself with a twenty - nine hour flu in order to experience what organic beings went through. Kes extended the Doctor's flu and he thought that his simulated virus was leading him to a simulated death. Kes later told him that it wouldnąt be a fair test if he knew when the flu would end. The Doctor once rescued Tuvok, Chakotay, and Harry Kim from photonic beings in the holodeck. In 2372, a holodeck malfunction trapped the Doctor in a fictional reality in which he was a Human named Doctor Lewis Zimmerman. A hologram of Lieutenant Reginald Barclay tried to convince him that he was real, and that he was married to Kes Zimmerman. Sometime in 2372, the Doctor fell in love with Denara Pel, a Vidiian scientist. On stardate 50252.3, the Doctor's matrix overloaded from having too much memory. The Doctor suffered a memory fragmentation and his program started to deteriorate rapidly. Torres and Kes managed to expand the Doctor's program so he wouldnąt lose all of his memory from Voyager's journey. The Doctor once created a holographic family. Torres made some adjustments because she thought that the family was a bunch of lollipops. Torres adjusted the program so it would be more like real life. The Doctor then discovered that families aren't always perfect. His holographic daughter was dying and the Doctor didn't want to continue the program. He finally decided that he needed to continue it. The Doctor found a way to defeat Species 8472 by using modified Borg nanoprobes in 2374. His holoemitter was almost destroyed by a mentally unstable hologram aboard an alien vessel. Luckily, Lieutenant Torres saved him.

In 2374, the Doctor traveled through an alien relay all the way to a Federation starship located in the Alpha Quadrant. Aboard the starship, which was called the U.S.S. Prometheus, he helped a fellow EMH retake the ship from a group of Romulans. The Doctor once helped the Voyager crew retake Voyager from the Hirogen in 2374. Also in 2374, Voyager encountered the Keriens. During this encounter, the Doctor's backup module was stolen. Although the Doctor remained on Voyager, a double of him was left aboard the Kerien homeworld for 700 years. Once he was finally activated, he set a course for home, hoping that he could discover the fate of his Voyager friends. The Doctor helped Seven of Nine run Voyager when it came in contact with a hazardous Mutara - Class nebula. The Doc's program went offline while Voyager was completing its journey, and Seven was forced to run the ship by herself. In 2375, a transporter accident merged the Doctor's holo - emitter and Seven of Nine's nanoprobes. When this happened, a 29th Century Borg was formed. The Borg, which was named One, sacraficed himself in order to save Voyager. This also allowed the Doctor to retrieve his holo - emitter. Fifteen years after those events, the Doctor helped the future Harry and Chakotay save the Voyager crew in the past.

In 2373, the Doctor was a member of an away mission that resulted in the death of Ensign Jatal, a member of Voyager's crew. Jatal died after the Doctor was forced to choose to save either her or Harry Kim. The Doctor was able to save Harry, but Jatal's life could not be saved. After this event took place, the Doctor began to go insane, telling himself that it was his fault she died. In order to save his program, Captain Kathryn Janeway rewrote his program so he would never remember her death. Two years later, the Doctor uncovered a photograph of Ensign Jatal. After he saw this photograph, he uncovered the truth of what happened and who erased his memory. Instead of rewriting his program a second time, Janeway decided to let the Doctor face Jatal's death, even though he might never recover from it. In 2375, the Doctor fell in love with Seven of Nine. However, he could never bring himself to tell her. When Voyager encountered the U.S.S. Equinox, the Doctor was captured. The Equinox's captain, Captain Ransom, deactivated his ethical subroutines. When the Voyager crew rescued the Doc, they restored them. In 2376, the Doctor experimented with a program that allowed him to daydream. When nearby aliens observed his daydreams and mistook them for reality, chaos ensued. Everything was later cleared up, with the Doctor's help.
