Synopsis

On a Federation starship, Starfleet officers frantically run around repairing ruptured conduits and broken consoles. A Captain stands up and orders everyone to grab their phaser rifles while the shields recharge. They arm themselves, and the shields are dropped in order to recharge. Suddenly, a high pitched sound fills the room. Out of nowhere, a spatial fissure opens, allowing a strange alien to fly out. It is immediately phasered by the nearest crewman. Several more portals open, and everyone does their best to repel the creatures. Without warning, one of them attacks an officer wearing a yellow security uniform. He screams and falls to the floor. He's dead.

On the U.S.S. Voyager, several members of the senior staff look at a message they have recently received. It's a distress call, and it's from the Federation starship Equinox. Voyager heads for the Equinox and extends its shields around it when they are requested to do so. Janeway then leads an away team and boards the vessel. All survivors are beamed to Voyager, where the Doctor treats them in sickbay. Meanwhile, Janeway finds Captain Ransom, the Equinox's commanding officer, and the two begin to talk.

He informs Janeway that he was also brought to the Delta Quadrant by the Caretaker, and his ship has been under attack by strange alien creatures for several weeks. Later, the Doctor discovers the reason why the aliens are attacking the Equinox. They are defending themselves. It turns out that the Equinox's crew is so desperate to reach home that they are killing the creatures and transforming their remains into fuel that can greatly enchance thier warp drive. When Janeway learns about this, she has every member of the Equinox crew confined to quarters aboard Voyager. However, the Equinox's EMH deactivates Voyager's EMH, and beams to Voyager. Nobody notices this, and the Equinox's EMH is able to free his crew. They get involved in a phaser fight with one of Voyager's security teams. They easily defeat them, and beam back to their ship. Once there, they use the transporter to steal Voyager's field generator, which can be modified to trap the aliens once they enter our space.

B'Elanna tries to retrieve it, but has no luck. Then, Voyager's shields fail when the aliens overwhelm them. Portals begin opening on both Voyager and the Equinox. The Equinox manages to escape harm by activating the field generator and going into warp. Voyager isn't able to escape before the aliens begin their attack. Right after the Equinox enters warp, the aliens flood Voyager's bridge. Phaser beams fill the air. As Janeway and Chakotay fight the creatures, another portal opens in the air. Chakotay turns around in time to see an alien rushing towards a defenseless Janeway.

My Thoughts

"Equinox" was a nice episode, but it wasn't nearly as good as I was hoping it would be. The aliens didn't really seem like a threat like Species 8472 did. The music was okay, but not great. The special effects were good most of the time. The acting was okay. I did like some things about this episode. The battle damage aboard the Equinox was great. I don't know what to think about the Equinox crew, however. Is it just me or have most of the high ranking officers in Starfleet become evil over the past few years? My favorite Equinox crewmembers were Gilmore and Noah Lessing. I didn't care for Max and Ransom. My favorite scene during this episode was the scene where Seven tries to keep Noah calm. Overall, I found "Equinox" to be disappointing, especially compared to Voyager's best season finale "Scorpion". I don't think it deserved to be a cliffhanger. It could have been shortened and made into a single episode. However, that's just my opinion. My Rating : 8.50 out of 10.00
