Synopsis

After Janeway gives Tuvok a cake for his birthday, she's called to the bridge. Apparantly, they're receiving a distress call from an Ocampan. The distress call is put on screen. It's Kes.

She looks a lot older than she did when we last saw her. She begs Janeway to let her come onboard, and Janeway doesn't hesitate to agree. However, instead of proceeding to the shuttlebay, she rams her shuttle into Voyager's side. She then roams the corridors, tearing apart the ship left and right. Finally, she makes her way to engineering, where she kills Lieutenant Torres and drains energy from the warp core. Then she vanishes into thin air.

Over four years earlier, the aged Kes appears in enginering. She uses her advanced powers to make herself appear younger. She then seeks out her younger self and uses a hypospray to knock her uncounscious. She then hides the body in the hydroponics bay.

Then she contacts the Vidiians and agrees to help them harvest Voyager. In exchange, she wants them to give Neelix and her past self safe passage to Ocampa. She doesn't want to spare any other member of the crew. Tuvok and Janeway, however, are starting to realize that Kes isn't who she seems.

The Vidiians arrive, and they use a long hook to cut open Voyager's hull. The Vidiians board and engage Tuvok's security teams in battle. Janeway meets the future Kes and kills her in self-defense. Before Janeway kills her, the older Kes says that she wasn't ready to enter another dimension, and she's spent the past few years lonely and afraid. She blames the Voyager crew for making her leave Ocampa and making her explore her telepathic abilities.

Voyager rips free of the Vidiian vessel and takes severe damage to the hull. However, the crew survives. Janeway then meets with Kes and Tuvok to discuss what they can do to prevent Kes' revenge from taking its course in the future.

Over four years later, Janeway gives Tuvok a cake for his birthday. Then she's called to the bridge. Apparantly, they're receiving a distress call from an Ocampan. Janeway gasps and looks back at Tuvok. They'd almost forgotten. The Captain immediately raises shields and goes to red alert. She then deactivates the warp core and has Deck 11 evacuated.

The distress call is from Kes, and she looks a lot older than she did when we last saw her. She begs Janeway to let her come onboard. This time Janeway does hesitate to agree. She asks Kes why she needs to come aboard. However, instead of answering, Kes rams her shuttle into Voyager's side. She baords the vessel and tears apart the ship deck by deck. Finally, she reaches engineering, but the warp core is offline and no one is there. A hologram is activated, and the old Kes whirls around to see a younger version of herself.

The younger Kes pleads with the older Kes to rethink her decision. She tells her that she doesn't need to hurt her friends. After all, Kes was the one who decided to leave Ocampa. She was also the one who decided to explore her telepathic abilities and leave the ship. The older Kes is moved by her words, and she agrees to cease her hostile actions. Janeway offers to let her rejoin the crew, but she declines. She says she needs to be with her people. After Neelix, Tuvok, and Janeway say farewell, Kes returns to her vessel and sets a course for her home, Ocampa. With her abilities, she'll get there soon. She finally gets the farewell she deserves.

My Thoughts

"Fury" was absolutely terrific, and it's my favorite episode of the entire season. I'd been waiting for Kes' return for months, and I wasn't disappointed. I loved the entire show. Jennifer Lien was wonderful in her dual roles as Kes, and I'm glad that her character finally got the farewell she deserves. The producers did a great job of making Kes look old and evil. Kate Mulgrew and Tim Russ also turned in some memorable performances. My favorite scene of the episode was the Janeway/Kes showdown in the hydroponics bay. It was very intense and dramatic. Jay Chattaway's musical score was very nice, and the special effects were awesome. I especially enjoyed the shot of the Vidiian vessel latching onto Voyager, as well as the scene where Voyager gives the Vidiians their daily dose of photon torpedoes. Also, the scenes where Kes tears apart Voyager were very realistic. In fact, the effects for this episode are some of the most impressive I've seen on Voyager all season. All in all, "Fury" was a lovely addition to the Voyager universe. We were treated to the return of an old favorite, some intriguing drama, the return of the Vidiians, and lots more. Oh, we got to see Ensign Wildman and Lieutenant Carey too! It also started out Voyager's May Sweeps with a bang. My Rating: An extremely enthusiastic 10.00 out of 10.00! It's the best episode of the season! NEXT WEEK: The Doctor travels to the Alpha Quadrant.
