Synopsis
Janeway and Seven of Nine are in one of Voyager’s holodecks. They are playing a game called velocity. Both of them use their phasers to deflect a round flying object. The object hits the holodeck wall and flies toward Seven. She quickly knocks the object over to Janeway. Janeway backs away and trips, but she still hits the object with her phaser beam. The object hits the floor and touches Seven. The computer announces that the game is over and Janeway has won.
Janeway turns to leave, and Seven challenges her to another game. Janeway declines. Seven then says that Janeway is afraid that she will lose. The Captain repeats to Seven that she’s done playing for the day. She then exits the holodeck and leaves Seven of Nine alone.
After the game of velocity, Janeway tries to decode the Starfleet message the Voyager crew received several months ago. While she is doing this, Chakotay approaches her. The two talk about the message, then about Seven of Nine’s attitude. After they are done with their conversation, they head for the shuttlbay. Neelix and Paris have just returned from a trade mission, and they have lots of supplies to unload.
When they enter the shuttlebay, Janeway is introduced to Arturis. In echange for his help on the trade mission, Neelix agreed to bring him to a nearby system Voyager was passing. When Arturis mentions that he is very good at figuring out codes and languages, Janeway gets an idea. She asks him if he can uncode the Starfleet message she has been working on. He agrees and she brings him to tthe Astrometrics Lab.
Seven joins Janeway and Arturis in Astrometrics, and Arturis decodes the message in minutes. The message includes a letter from Admiral Hayes and instructions to report to a certain star system, where a ship is waiting to take the crew home.
Once Voyager reaches the ship, which is called the U.S.S. Dauntless, an away team beams over and examines the vessel’s interior. Suddenly the Dauntless disappears into a type of transwarp corridor, which is caused by the Dauntless’ slip stream drive. The slip stream drive will allow the crew to reach home in just three months.
Once the Dauntless comes out of the slip stream corridor, Voyager has to travel for two full days at maximum warp to reach them. After Voyager has beamed back its away team, Janeway sends engineering and security teams over to the Dauntless to see if it is a Federation vessel or a trap planted by an alien species.
After investigating the ship, Harry and Tuvok discover that the interior isn’t Starfleet, it’s just a large hologram. Meanwhile, Janeway and Seven discover that Arturis hid a message from Admiral Hayes. It says nothing about the Dauntless, and it wishes the Voyager crew a safe journey home.
Janeway, Tuvok, and Seven board the Dauntless’ bridge and inform Arturis that they know he hid the message and built the Dauntless to trap the Voyager crew. Before the security team can stop him, Arturis starts to take the Dauntless into the slip stream corridor. Voyager’s transporter crew manages to beam everyone back to Voyager except Janeway and Seven.
Janeway and Seven manage to escape from the holding cell that Arturis has placed them in. Then they try to stop Arturis, who is taking the Dauntless to Borg space so they can all be assimilated. He is doing this because when Voyager defeated Species 8472, nothing stopped the Borg from assimilating his people.
All of a sudden, Voyager appears behind the Dauntless in the corridor and disables its shields with phasers and torpedoes. Janeway and Seven are beamed off the Dauntless just before it enters the edge of Borg space. Voyager quickly turns around and travels through the slip stream corridor until it can no longer due so. After everyone starts to recover from the disappointment of another failed attempt to return home, Seven and Janeway play another game of velocity.

My Thoughts
Even though it wasn't a cliffhanger, Hope and Fear was a good, solid episode. It is definately in the top three episodes of the season. Hope and Fear was a great episode for character development. The only characters that had any development were Seven and Janeway. The special effects were once again fantastic. Especially the battle scene in the slip stream. During the battle scene, Voyager used about five photon torpedoes. I wonder if they'll get some more any thime soon. The Dauntless was a cool ship. I think that my favorite scenes were toward the end. The first was when Arturis waited to be assimilated. The second was the battle scene in the slip stream. The third was when Janeway and Seven had a rematch at velocity.
