Ensign Tom Paris

Tom Paris is a Starfleet officer aboard the USS Voyager, which is currently lost in the Delta Quadrant. Early in his career Paris served aboard the USS Exeter. He majored in Astrophisics at the Academy. As an Academy cadet, Paris chose the base outside Marsielles,France, for physical training in his second semester at the Academy. He spent most of his time that semester at Chez Sandrine, a bistro that he later recreated on Voyager’s holodeck. Paris was the son of a Starfleet Admiral. After he graduated from Starfleet Academy. he was involved in a fatal accident that claimed the lives of three Starfleet officers. At first Paris denied responsibility for the accident, but later admitted that he had faked the reports to hide that he was guilty. He was forced to leave Starfleet. In later years, Paris said that his greatest mistake was not telling the truth. After Paris was kicked out of Starfleet he joined the Maquis, but was arrested by Federation authorities on his first mission. He was imprisoned at a Federation Penal Colony in New Zealand on Earth. He was released in 2371 at the request of Captain Janeway. In exchange for his release Paris agreed to help Voyager locate his former shipmates in the Maquis. While searching for the Maquis vessel Voyager and all of its crew was thrown into the far reaches of the Delta Quadrant. There they were forced to join forces with the Maquis crew in order to survive. Janeway then reinstated Paris’s Starfleet commision and gave him the rank of lieutenant. He was assigned as the ship’s pilot. Paris experienced some discomfort working under Commander Chakotay a former Maquis captain. Sometime in 2372 Paris made history by becoming the first human to cross the transwarp threshold and reach and attain a warp ten velocity. The experience accelerated his DNA and mutated him into an amphibious creature. He was later restored to himself by the Doctor. Tom enjoyed 20th CenturyAmerica and was fond of foods from that time period. He often convinced Neelix to make some of those foods like pizza. Paris played a key part in an elaborate scheme divised by Janeway and Tuvok. The scheme was intended to trap a spy that was telling Seska and the Kazon things about Voyager. Paris exhibited increasing anger and discontent with his life aboard Voyager for several weeks in 2372. This ended with his departure from the Voyager crew. After he left he joined a Talaxian ship. The Kazon captured him. Aboard a Kazon - Nistrim vessel he found out that the spy was Michael Jonas. Jonas was killed by Neelix when Neelix tried to save the ship. Jonas fell into a plasma cloud. Paris then rejoined the Voyager crew. In 2372 Paris was very much attracted to Kes. He decided not to act on his feelings because Neelix was involved with her. In an alternate timeline visited by Kes, her and Tom got married and had a child. Harry Kim then married their child making him Tom’s grandson.

In 2375, Tom was demoted to the rank of ensign after disobeying a direct order from Captain Kathryn Janeway. While at a world made completely of water, Paris found out that pollution from some local alien factory was destroying the planet. Since Paris had always been interested in oceans, he took a personal interest in the safety of the world. The Voyager crew warned the aliens living in the ocean that they needed to take certain precautions to save the world. The aliens had no intention of listening, however. Paris then stole the Delta Flyer and attempted to destroy the factories creating the problem. His attempts were stopped by Janeway, and she proceeded by demoting him. After his demotion, he was sentenced to a full month in the brig.
