"If we don't stop the Borg, the Brunali have no future." --- Ichep's mother
Synopsis
Voyager holds its first ever science fair for Naomi, Mezoti, Ichep, and the other children onboard. Janeway is amazed at how incredible the kids' projects are. Everyone is having a great time, including Seven. However, Janeway pulls her aside and informs her that Ichep's parents have been located. He's going to leave Voyager.
This does not please Seven, who has become quite attached to Ichep and the others. Reluctantly, she gives him the news. At first he doesn't take it well, but when Voyager reaches the Brunali homeworld, he meets his parents and begins to warm up to them. After just a day, he makes up his mind. He likes his parents, and he wants to stay with them and build a future for his people. Seven and the rest of the crew say farewell.
Later, Mezoti informs Seven that Ichep's parents weren't honest with him or the Voyager crew. Although they love Ichep, they plan on shipping him back to the Borg. They genetically engineered him to produce a virus which is deadly to cybernetic organisms. Seven manages to foil their plan just in time for Voyager to save Ichep from being assimilated by a Borg sphere. The sphere and Voyager exchange weapons fire. Voyager comes out victorious, and the crew resumes their course for home.
My Thoughts
I really liked "Child's Play". Although many people are getting tired of the Borg, I still like seeing them on Voyager. Despite the fact that they aren't nearly as frightening as they used to be, they're still the best enemy Trek has. Voyager just wouldn't be Voyager without them. It's quite obvious that no one onboard Voyager will ever be assimilated, but that doesn't really bother me. The Borg are still fun to watch. I think so, anyway. This episode gave us another glimpse at one of the countless worlds which the Borg have devastated. Although the Brunali aren't very technologically advanced, they can still fight back. The sweeping shots of the Brunali settlement were good, as were all of the actors and actresses who brought the Brunali to life. Ichep's parents were the only Brunali that we really got to know. They were wonderfully portrayed, as was Ichep himself. It was nice to see Naomi yet again, as well as Mezoti. David Bell's musical score perfectly accomponied the tone of the show. The special effects were quite good this week. I absolutely loved the shot of Voyager warping away from the exploding Borg Sphere. The effects weren't the season's best, but they were pretty impressive. ("Dragon's Teeth" has the best special effects of the season so far, followed by "One Small Step" and "Equinox Part 2".) My Rating : A well - deserved 10.00 out of 10.00 -- NEXT WEEK: Janeway takes some inexperienced crewmembers on a routine away mission in the Delta Flyer. However, things soon take a turn for the worse, and they must work together to survive. I'm really looking forward to this one. It looks great.
