"Stop breathing down my neck." The Doctor
"My breathing is merely a simulation." mark2
"So is my neck. Stop it anyway." The Doctor

Synopsis
Torres and Chakotay are walking through the corridors of Voyager. “Cold, patronizing, arrogant, difficult.” Torres says. “I’m tired of being the referee. Talk to her.”Chakotay says. “Does irrelevant mean anything to you? She may look human and sound human, but she’s all Borg.” B’Elanna says with anger. “The problem is your attitude! You never accepted Seven as part of the crew.” Chakotay tells B’Elanna. “This morning she took an isolinear processor out of engineering. When I went to get it back she had locked herself in The Astrometrics Lab and acts like it’s her own personnel workplace.” While B’Elanna is talking Seven calls Chakotay over the comm and tells him to report to Astrometrics immediately. “See Chakotay! She’s giving orders now! I’m telling you Chakotay. If she gets in the way I’m not responsible for what happens.” “What do you propose we do with her for the rest of the journey? Lock her in the brig?” asks Chakotay. “I’ve heard worse ideas.” B’Elanna replies. “You’re a Starfleet officer. Act like one.” Chakotay walks away and Torres storms down the corridor. * * * Chakotay runs to catch up with Janeway. “Astrometrics?” he asks. “I’ve been summoned.” says Janeway. When they enter the Astrometrics Lab Seven tells them that she has something that she thought they would be interested in. She says that long range sensors have picked up a vessel. “A ship. What’s so special about it?” asks Janeway. “Its warp signatures determine that it is a Starfleet vessel.” * * * “The ship we are seeing is in the Alpha Quadrant.” Seven informs them. “You couldn’t have increased the sensors that far?” Chakotay asks. Seven says that she can’t. While scanning the surrounding space she found a massive alien array that includes thousands of relay stations. The relay stations are connected across the quadrant. The one closest to the edge of the Alpha Quadrant is picking up the Federation ship that they see. “It must be on a deep space mission!” Janeway exclaims. Seven tells them that in forty minutes the ship will be out of range of the array. Janeway says that they have to contact the ship. * * * On the bridge Torres says that they are ready to send the message. They now have sixteen minutes left. The hailing frequencies are opened and Janeway starts her message. “This is Captain Kathryn Janeway of the Federation Starship Voyager. We are in the Delta Quadrant at 18 mark205 mark47. Change your signal to match our inter link frequency.” The message is sent. A few seconds later they get a message back. The crew is dismayed to hear Janeway’s own message filled with static. They try to send the message again. Seven informs them that their message is being deflected. The second message comes back. Janeway throws up her hands in despair. Seven says that the carrier wave is degrading. Torres says that they could send a holographic message. Chakotay says that it would take to long. “Unless....” “The Doctor!” says B’Elanna. * * * In sickbay the Doctor is working with some medical supplies. Torres runs in and says that the Doctor is coming with her. “Well you could at least tell me what all........” he says as he disappears. Torres grabs the Doctor’s holoemitter and runs back out of sickbay. * * * “When I asked for more away missions this isn’t exactly what I had in mind.” the Doctor tells Janeway. Janeway informs him that his program will be sent across thousands of light years and there is a chance that his program will be lost. The Doctor agrees to go on with the mission. Seven informs them that there are only ten seconds until the ship is out of range. The Doctor is then transported through the array. He is transported into the ship’s sickbay. “Hello! Is anyone Here?” He then asks the computer if he is in the Alpha Quadrant. “Affirmative.” He tries to contact the bridge ,but his attempts fail. He cannot contact any other part of the ship either. As he is talking to the computer he sees distruptor marks on the wall. He then sees about three crewmen laying on the floor. All but one is dead. The Doctor gives him a hypospray. He wakes up. “What happened here?” “Romulans.....They’ve taken over the ship.” the crewman says. * * * On the bridge of the USS Prometheus, the ship that the Doctor is on, a Romulan announces that a Federation Starship is approaching their position on an intercept course. “Raise shields and prepare to fire phasers.” the Romulan Captain tells his crew. * * * The computer tells the Doctor that there are twenty seven Romulans on board and all of the Federation crew is dead. The Doctor asks the computer for a diagram of the ship that he is on. A picture of the ship comes on the view screen. The computer starts to talk. “The USS Prometheus is a Federation prototype designed for deep space tactical missions. The Prometheus is equipped with regenerative shielding, a blade of hull armor, and multi vector assault mode.” “Multi vector assault mode? Explain.” the Doctor tells the computer. The computer tells the Doctor that he needs level 4 security clearance or above to access information about multi vector assault mode. Then the Doctor almost loses his footing as the ship starts to shake. * * * The Prometheus flies through space. Shortly behind it a ship that looks like a Nebula - class Starship, fires its phasers. The Prometheus is hit about two more times. One Romulan falls to the floor after a console explodes in his face. The Romulan commander tells his helmsman to engage the multi vector assault mode. “Sir, that system has never been tested.” “I said multi vector assault mode, now!” “Yes, sir. Engaging multi vector assault mode.” The Computer starts the count down and blue alert comes on. “Ten, nine, eight, seven, six.............” * * * In sickbay blue lights are flashing and the computer continues its countdown. “Five, four, three........” “Computer? What’s happening?” asks the Doctor. The computer doesn’t respond. “Two.” “Computer?” “One, zero, engaging multi vector assault mode now.” * * * We see the Prometheus, which has four nacelles, start to split up. It looks almost like a saucer separation on a Galaxy - class starship. There is only one thing different. The Prometheus divides into three sections. The top, middle, and bottom come apart. On the bridge the Romulan in control of the helm announces that multi vector assault mode is complete. The computer asks to specify target. “The Starfleet vessel. Attack mode Beta 4 7.” says the Romulan commander. The three sections of the Prometheus form a triangle around the Federation ship. They all fire. In a couple of seconds a small explosion comes from the back of the ship. The ship starts to tilt looking like it is disabled. “I think I consider that a successful test.” the Commander tells his helmsman. The helmsman sees that her fellow officer, who was injured earlier in the fight, is injured. She tells the commander. “Take him to the medical bay.” he tells her. She helps the other Romulan up and they enter the turbolift. * * * In sickbay the Doctor holds on to a biobed as the ship reconnects. There is a short shudder and the ship is back together. The Doctor asks the computer if there is anyway that he could send a message out to another vessel. “Negative. You need level four clearance or above.” Just then two Romulans walk in. The Doctor runs and hides behind a large console. Then he gets an idea. “Please state the nature of the medical emergency.” he says standing up. The Romulan officer jumps, startled by the Doctor’s appearance. “Who activated you?” “Why you did, of course. Automatically when you entered sickbay.” “Will you he him?” the Romulan asks the Doctor. “Yes. That’s my function.” The Doctor then informs the Romulan that her fellow officer has a jaw line fracture, a ruptured blood vessel in the brain, and third degree burns. “Why should I trust you. You’re a Starfleet program.” “I'm a Doctor. Whether my patient is Human or Romulan, I’ll do everything in my power to save them. You can assist me if you like. Or perhaps you would prefer to supervise.” The Romulan tells the Doctor to report to her when he is finished. She them leaves the sickbay. After she is gone the Doctor leaves the Romulan patient. “Computer. Can I access this ship’s EMH or do I need clearance for that too?” The computer says that no clearance is required to activate the EMH. “Good. Activate it.” The air shimmers and a hologram stands in the middle of the room. “Please state the nature of the medical emergency.” He turns around and sees the Doctor. “What are you doing in my sickbay!” * * * “I fully recall every crew member aboard this vessel. You are not one of them.” “That’s because I’m.....” the Doctor starts to say. “Please state your rank and security clearance.” the Prometheus EMH says. “I don’t have clearance.” says the Doctor sounding irritated. The Doctor starts to talk again. “I’m an EMH. I’ve been sent here to........” “Yes. Yes. Yes. Yes. Yes.” The Prometheus EMH says smugly. He continues to talk. “I know you. Your the mark1 EMH. The inferior program.” “Inferior!” the Doctor says angrily. The Prometheus EMH continues on talking. “Beady eyes. Terrible bed side manner. I recognize you. But your not part of this database. What are you doing here?” “If you would disengage your vocal subroutines for a second I would tell you.” the Doctor says sounding annoyed. The Doctor starts to tell mark2 why he is aboard the ship. “I was transported here by a Federation Starship 60,00 light years from here.” “We don’t have ships out that far.” mark2 says interrupting him. “We were thrown into the Delta Quadrant by a powerful alien force....... What are you doing?” “I’m signaling an intruder alert. Security!” The Doctor runs over and puts his hand over mark2’s mouth. “No that’s the last thing that you want to do! This vessel has been taken over by Romulans! The Federation crew is dead. We are the only Starfleet crew left!” The Doctor takes his hand off of mark2’s mouth. “Computer deactivate Emergency Medical Hologram!” The Doctor watches as mark2 deactivates and disappears. He looks around then he starts to get irritated. “Computer. Activate Emergency Medical Hologram!” “Please state the nature of the medical emergency. Now what ?!” “I need your help.” the Doctor tells mark2. “Starfleet protocol 28 subsection D. In the event of a hostile alien takeover the EMH is to deactivate himself and wait for rescue.” mark 2 says. “I’m afraid you don’t have that luxury. There are two ships at stake. Yours and mine. Now, I need to know more. Is the Federation at war with the Romulans?” “No. The Romulans haven’t gotten involved in our war with the Dominion.” mark2 says. “The who?” the confused Doctor asks. “It’s a long story.” mark2 tells him. The Doctor says that they need to control the situation. “I’m a Doctor, not a commando!” mark2 says. “It’s time that you became a little of both.” the Doctor tells him. “You don’t understand. The Prometheus is a prototype, and so am I. I, I, I haven’t even been field tested! I’m not designed for this kind of duty!” mark2 tells the Doctor. The Doctor then touches mark2 on the shoulder. Mark2 jumps. “Settle down!” the Doctor tells him. “You’ll do fine. As long as I’m here. I’ve got plenty of expertise in this area. Now. First things first. We’ve got a patient.” The Doctor tells mark2. “You’re not serious!” “I certainly am!” “He’s the enemy!” mark2 says. “He needs our help. I assume you are familiar with the Hippocratic oath?” the Doctor asks mark2. “You see? You see what’s happening. The Romulans are using you!” “Hmmmm.” “Hmmmm what?” mark2 asks. “Your holomatrix is malfunctioning. That may explain your erratic behavior.” the Doc tells him. “I’m a work in progress. I was only installed a couple of weeks ago!” mark2 says. “Stable or not I need you, and so does he.” Mark2 picks up the tricorder and scans the Romulan. “He’ll live. I say we deactivate ourselves.” “You can go cower in the data processor if you like. “ “We’re medical holograms. How do you expect us to defeat a ship full of Romulans.” mark2 asks the Doctor. “I’m not sure. Not yet. I’ve faced my share of challenges. Alien invasions, macrovirul infections, I’ve crossed Borg space, traveled through time.............” “Have you run a self diagnosis lately?” mark2 asks him. “The EMH mark1 is designed to function in sickbay only.” “Voyager’s chief medical officer died four years ago. I’ve been active ever since.” “Four years!?” mark2 says sounding amazed. “No wonder your delusional. Your program is degrading after being active for so long.” “I assure you I am in perfect health! I was saving Voyager from annihilation before you were even a gleam in your programmer’s eye. Now are you going to help me take back this ship or not?!?” the Doctor says yelling at mark2. “Get me the thrombic modulator.” The Doctor walks over to the side of the biobed. He looks at the pile of tools that are laying there. He picks up one of the tools. He activates it and it starts to hum. “It’s the cone shaped device. Hand it to me please!” The Doctor gives him the modulator. As mark2 starts to operate on the Romulan he continues to talk to the Doctor. “Medical science has made a few advancements while you been in the.............Delta Quadrant did you says?” “Yes,” the Doctor says sounding aggravated. “ We don’t use scalpels or leeches anymore. I suggest that you leave the medical side of things to me. As for retaking the ship......I’ll leave that in your experienced hands.” says mark2. * * * On the bridge of Voyager the crew stare solemnly into space. All of a sudden the turbolift door slides open. Chakotay walks into the bridge and takes his place in his seat next to Janeway. “No word yet. Our link to the sensor net is still stable. I tried to relieve Seven from her post, but she said that she didn’t have to regenerate for the next few days. What are you doing.” Chakotay asks Janeway. “Letters home. One to Mark and one to my family. I started them a year ago. I’m just updating them a little. I know its premature.” “It’s probably a mistake getting our hopes up. We’ve certainly been through this before.” There is a short silence. Then Chakotay speaks again. “All right. I’ll admit it. I just finished writing a letter to my cousin in Ohio.” Janeway starts to laugh. * * * Neelix paces in sickbay. Beside him two crew members are sitting on the biobeds. They are leaning over. They are also moaning and breathing heavily. Paris then walks into the sickbay. “The Doctor is in.” he announces. “Thank goodness your here!” Neelix exclaims. “What’s wrong with them?” Neelix asks Paris. After scanning them with his tricorder Paris tells him. “Acute functional dispepsia.” “What’s that?” Neelix asks confused. “Heartburn,” Paris tells him. “Oh, I’m terribly sorry! I don’t know how this could have happened! ” Neelix tells the two crewmen. Paris tells the two crewmen that he will bring them some antacid in just a minute. Paris walks over to the Doctor’s office. Neelix follows. “They’re going to be all right aren’t they?” Neelix asks smiling. “Neelix it’s only heartburn not the Terellian plague. “What did you feed them anyway?” Paris asks. “Rodeal Red’s Red Hot Rootin’ Tootin’ Chili.” “Where did you find that recipe?” Neelix tells him that he was looking in Earth’s twentieth century database. “I’m brushing up on Earth’s twentieth century foods. I want to make sure that I have marketable job skills when we get back to Earth.” “Don’t you think that you’re jumping the gun a little, Neelix?” “Not at all. The Doctor is going to come back with a plan for Starfleet to rescue us. I have complete confidence in him.” “I hope you’re right or I’ll be treating upset stomachs for the rest of our journey.” “I promise you this will never happen again. It’s just a matter of perfecting the recipe. Next time I won’t use so many jalapenos.” As Neelix leaves Paris realizes why the two crewmen got heartburn. * * *
The Doctor says that the Prometheus is heading for Romulan space at Warp 9.9. “The Prometheus is the fastest ship in the fleet. Nobody will ever catch us.” “We’ve go to find a way to turn this ship around.” the Doctor says. “What do you suggest we do? Waltz onto the bridge and take it over?” “Remind me. Which one of us has the terrible bed side manner?” the Doctor asks mark2. “You are not my patient.” “My first bit of good news.” says the Doctor. “We have to find a way to incapacitate the Romulans. What kind on anesthetics do you have?” the Doctor asks mark2. “Only the best. Neurozine, axinol, anesthetize....” “Neurozine will do nicely. We need to spread it throughout the ship in gaseous form. Show me the schematic of the ship’s ventilation system.” Mark two doesn’t do anything. “Please,” adds the Doctor. Mark2 brings up the schematic. The Doctor finds out that he has to go to the bridge to open the vents. Then he notices something. “It looks like there are holoemitters on every deck.” “There are. Unlike you I’m not condemned to sickbay.” The Doctor tells him to get the three cans of neurozine. “For a matter of record I have free reign aboard Voyager. I can leave sickbay. I can even leave the ship.” “Leave the ship? How is that possible.” “With my holoemitter. A little piece of twenty - ninth century technology.” Then the Doctor tells mark2 of all the achievements that he has accomplished. The Doctor says that he has to go to the bridge. “The bridge is swarming with Romulans!” mark2 says. “That’s the first thing you learn in the real world, think on your feet.” “Well good luck then.” Mark2 starts to deactivate himself. “Not so fast! You’re going to jefferies tube 17.” “Jefferies tube 17? That’s five decks up! What if I run into Romulans?” “Improvise,” says the Doctor. The Doctor opens the jefferies tube. Mark2 crawls in backwards. He can’t get in. “Traditionally one goes in headfirst.” the Doctor tells mark2. “Thanks,” mark2 says. He crawls in headfirst. After a few moments he pokes his head back out of the jefferies tube. The Doctor hands him the three cans of neurozine. After mark2 is in the tube, the Doctor slams the hatch shut and storms out of sickbay. * * * The Doctor enters the bridge of the Prometheus. He tells the Romulans that their fellow crewman is fine. There is one problem though. The Doctor tells them that he has found that the Romulan has a case of the Terothka virus. “No one is sick here.” the Romulan commander says. “I hear that the stomach pain is unbearable. Or is the rash worse?” The Romulan commander decides that the Doctor should scan his crew. The helmsman asks why they are changing their course. The commander tells them that they are giving the ship to someone who will make use of its powers : The Tal Shiar. While the Romulans are talking the Doctor approaches the Ops console. “What are you doing?” the Commander asks the Doctor. The Doctor says that he is scanning the ship for the virus. The Romulan commander looks at the Doctor’s tricorder. “There aren’t any readings on this.” he says. “Hmmm,” the Doctor says. He starts to tap his tricorder. * * * In sickbay Tom Paris is treating another one of Neelix’s victims. “Next time, order the chicken salad.” The crewman leaves and Harry walks in. Tom puts his arm around Harry’s shoulders. “Look around you Harry. What do you see?” “Sickbay?”
“Exactly,” Tom says. “So.” “So its not the helm of a starship is it?” “Did you inject yourself with some kind of physcotropic agent?” Harry asks Tom. “I’m a pilot Harry, not a Doctor.” “it’s only a temporary job. Until the Doc gets back.” “What if he doesn’t get back?” “He’ll be back!” “Help me Harry! Rescue me from medical exile.” “How?” “Design a new Doctor.” “You really must be delirious. It took the best holoengineers in Starfleet four years to make the EMH.” “Think of it as a challenge Harry. You can become a hero and save your best friend all at the same time.” * * * Seven walks into the Astrometrics Lab to see Torres touching the controls. “You are recalibrating the relay interface. State your reasons for making these changes.” “State your reasons, please.” Seven looks confused. “It’s not what you say Seven. It’s how you says it. You notice that the crew feels on edge when your around.” “I was Borg.” says Seven. “Its not that Seven. We’re not afraid that your going to assimilate us. Its just that your.......rude.” “I am rude?” “Yes. Yes! You do things without asking. You boss people around and you come off as a little insulting. We’re not just a bunch of drones.” Seven tells Torres that she cannot modify their link to the array because there is a risk of losing the link. Torres then tells Seven that she probably wasn’t listening to anything that she said to her. Then the Astrometrics screen starts to change. Voyager is getting a transmission. “Is it the Doctor?” B’Elanna asks. Then an alien appears on the screen. “This array is property of the Hirogen.” “We thought the array was abandoned.” “You will terminate your link. All further messages will be held.” “No, wait!” Torres yells. The screen goes blank. “Our link has been severed.” says Seven. * * * “I’ll deactivate you if you don’t answer!” the Romulan Commander says. “If I answer you you’ll probably deactivate me anyway.” the Doctor says dryly. “You are a hologram. I find it hard to believe that you could have taken these acts alone.” “How flattering.” “Who’s operating you? A Starfleet crewman that we missed? One of my own men?” “Paranoia is a way of life for you isn’t it?” the Doctor asks the commander. Then the Romulan helmsman from earlier enters the room. She tells the Commander that they received an optronic data stream transmission over six hours ago.” “So. Starfleet has managed to sneak aboard a spy. How clever.” Then the Doctor tells them the truth. He has been transported from Voyager, which is in the Delta Quadrant. “The Delta Quadrant? That’s absurd.” the helmsman says. She then suggests that they use an algorithm extraction to get information out of the Doctor. Then a hissing sound starts. Gas flows into the room. Both of the Romulans start to gasp for breath. In a couple of moments they are both unconscious. Then mark2 transports into the room. “Did it work?” he then walks over to the Romulan and pushes her out of the chair that she is sitting in. “Sorry to interrupt.” he tells her. “Did you manage to anesthetize the whole ship?” the Doctor asks. “I did. I did.” mark2 says. “ How did you manage to release the gas? I didn’t open the vents.” the Doctor says sounding confused. Mark2 starts to tell his story. “EMH mark2. Trapped in the jefferies tubes. His smug comrade captured by Romulans. EMH mark2 had to improvise. Then, inspiration! I entered a ship wide computer simulated bio - hazard.” “Which made the computer think that every deck was contaminated.” the Doctor says finishing his sentence. Mark2 continues his speech. “I then crawled out of the jefferies tube, transferred myself to here, excused the Romulan, saw the dumbfounded look on my comrades face, and............” “The end! You should really keep a personal log. Why bore others needlessly?” the Doctor says interrupting mark2. Mark two then transfers them to the bridge. When they arrive on the bridge it looks like they are floating in space. Then we see that they are standing in front of the view screen. Mark2 tells the Doctor that only four people in Starfleet were trained to operate the Prometheus. “Nothing will help us fly this thing.” says mark2. “I’ve had plenty of experience. Actually, only two lessons. On a shuttle craft. On the holodeck.” the Doctor says. “But I showed great intuition!” he adds. “Where’s the helm?” “You better intuit it fast. We’re only eight minutes away from the Romulan border.” says mark2. When they reach the helm they are silent. Then mark2 speaks. “This is all very complicated.” “Stop breathing down my neck.” “My breathing is merely a simulation.” mark2 says. “So is my neck. Stop it anyway.” “Is this the thruster control?” “don’t touch that! We don’t know what it does! It could be the self destruct!” “You look worried.” “I’m just concentrating.” “You don’t know what you’re doing do you?! This isn’t a shuttle and we’re not on the holodeck! Mr. I can leave my ship. The voice of experience!” “Let me think! Ah. Here it is. This looks like the nacelle power control.” “So?” “So Mr. Paris taught me a trick once. If I can generate a slight overload in the nacelle coils it will collapse the warp field.” The Doctor taps the controls. Then the ship shakes. “What happened?” mark2 asks. “I did it! We stopped!” Then they here a beeping sound. “Beep beep beep. Beep beep beep? I’ve never heard that one before.” mark2 says. “Oh no.” “What?” “I don’t know ,but I think that whatever I did initiated a warp core overload.” “The ship’s going to explode! We’ve got to stop it!” “Ah. No problem.” the Doctor says as he deactivates the self destruct. Then they hear more beeping. “What now?” “Unless I’m mistaken, and I seriously hope that I am, there are three Romulan war birds on an intercept course. * * * On Voyager, Janeway, Seven, and Torres are in Astrometrics. Seven says that she is boosting the signal as far as she can. Then the screen has static. The Hirogen comes back on. “I warned you!” “Let me explain.” “No explanation!” “Your array gave us the unique opportunity to contact our people. They are very far away. We’re expecting a message from them soon.” “All messages will be intercepted!” “He’s trying to jam out signal again.” Torres says. On the screen the Hirogen starts to scream when a burst of electricity shocks him. “What happened?” asks Janeway. “I sent a surge along the array’s general feedback.” Seven explains. “You killed him?” Torres asks sounding amazed. “It is a mild shock. He will recover.” “And when he does?” Janeway asks Seven. “He wasn’t responding to diplomacy.” Seven says. Janeway tells Torres and Janeway to notify her if their friend causes any more trouble. After Janeway leaves Torres says, “Mild shock hmm. Not bad.” Thank you,” Seven replies. * * * “Computer activate EMH replacement.” Harry says. A replica of the Doctor appears in sickbay. It stands motionless next to Paris. Harry tells Tom that he needs to download all of the medical files and transfer them to the replacement Doctor. “Harry, you are a genius!” Tom says. “Don’t congratulate me yet. This is only the first step. This probably won’t work anyway.” “What happened to all that youthful optimism.” Tom asks Harry. Harry says that he is ready to transfer the files. After the files are transferred to the replacement Doctor the replacement Doctor starts to recite everything it knows about grazanatomy. “Listen, this is fastinating, but could you please be quiet!” “He doesn’t have voice recognition programs yet!” Harry says trying to speak over the Doctor. Then the replacement Doctor overloads. It shimmers and disappears. Harry starts to tap something on a padd. “What are you doing?” asks Paris. “I’m downloading grazanatomy, chapter by chapter.” “I thought it was too much data for the holomatrix to handle.” Paris says sounding confused. “It’s not for the EMH. It’s for you.” Harry says. He hands Paris the padd and leaves him alone in sickbay. * * * On the Prometheus the Doctor and mark2 are trying to get the engines running. The Romulan Warbirds are two minutes away. “Get us out of here!” “I can’t get us moving!” the Doctor says. He tells mark2 to reroute power to the impulse engines. “Reroute power. Reroute power.” he mumbles to himself. “I’m done. Hey! I think I’m getting the hang of this!” Just as mark2 says this the Doctor starts to shimmer. “What’s happening?” “Sorry. I must have transferred power from the holoemitters.” mark2 says. “Well be more careful. If I’m deactivated then this ship will never get back to Starfleet!” “I’m taking power from life support. We don’t need that anymore! Thirty seconds until intercept!” “I see the problem. The thrust initiator is off line.” “Fifteen seconds!” mark2 tells the Doctor. “They’re charging weapons!” mark2 yells. The Doctor tells him to put up the shields. The Doctor tells him again. When the Doctor turns to look at him, mark2 isn’t there. He frantically looks around the bridge. Then mark2 pops up from under the helm console. “Done! Shields up!” he says. Then the Romulan Warbirds contact the Prometheus. “Commander Rakar. Commander Rakar respond.” the voice says. The Doctor is forced to answer the hail. He changes his voice and answers. Then the Romulan talks to him. “Put yourself on the view screen.” “Our view screen is not operational. We’ve been having trouble with some Starfleet commandos.” the Doctor says. “Where is Rakar.” “He is in our medical bay, recovering.” “Identify yourself.” “You first,” mark2 whispers to the Doctor. “You first,” the Doctor tells the Romulan. Then he realizes what he said. “Repeat your last statement.” “You identify yourself first.” The Romulan identifies himself as a commander from the Tal Shiar. “Lower your shields.” “Our shields are down. Maybe your sensors are malfunctioning.” Then the Romulans decide that they have had enough. They fire at the Prometheus. The ship starts to shake. “Shields down to twenty percent.” shouts mark2. “We’re doomed. There are three more ships coming this way.” says the Doctor. “Wait. They’re Starfleet!” he shouts. The Prometheus starts to shake and the Doctor realizes that the Starfleet ships are firing at the. “What are they doing!” “Firing at us!” the Doctor tells mark2. “They must think that Romulans are still on board!” “They’re right!” Mark2 tries to contact the Starfleet vessels, but it is no use because the Romulans have jammed the communications frequencies. Then something goes off line. The ship starts to hum loudly as it comes to a stop. Then the Doctor tells mark2 to get to the tactical console. “Shoot! Shoot!” the Doctor yells. “They’re are so many controls.” mark2 says. “Find the button that says fire and push it!” “It says that the phasers are off line.” “Then fire a torpedo!” mark2 says, yelling at mark2. Mark2 fires the torpedo. We watch as the torpedo sails slowly around one of the Warbirds and hit the bottom of one of the Defiant type of vessels. “You hit the wrong ship!” the Doctor screams. “It wasn’t my fault!” mark2 yells in defense. “Whose fault was it! The torpedoes! You’re supposed to tell it what to do!” The ship shakes and the consoles spark. Mark2 announces that shields are off line and weapons are failing. The Doctor says that two Warbirds are coming straight at them. “My brilliant existence cut short.” mark2 says. Then he starts to tell the Doctor all of the things that he will never be able to have. Mark2 accidentally hits a button on the helm console. All of a sudden blue lights flash. “What have I done now?” mark2 asks. “Auto separation in ten seconds .Nine. Eight. Seven.” the computer says. The computer continues to count. “Six. Five. Four.” The Doctor says that he remembers that the Romulans did this before. “Three.” “Can we stop it.” “I don’t think so, but I remember that this part gets a little bumpy. “Two. One.” “Hold on!” the Doctor shouts. The ship starts to shake. “ Separation sequence in progress.” After the ship is done shaking the computer announces that separation sequence is complete. “Specify attack pattern.” “Alpha,” the Doctor says, just guessing. “Specify target,” the computer says. “Romulans!” mark2 and the Doctor shout in unison. Hero music plays as the three sections of the Prometheus navigate their way around the Romulan vessel. All three sections fire. The other Starfleet vessels join in. Their is a small explosion followed by a big one. The Warbird is destroyed. “The other Warbirds are retreating!” the Doctor says happily. More hero music plays as the two holograms salute each other. “Alarms beeping everywhere.” “EMH mark2. Newborn but filled with courage.” mark2 says. “EMH mark1. Armed with years of experience.” “Together they emerged triumphant.” says the Doctor. “The end!” says mark2. Then they see a transporter beam. “Or not,” adds mark2. Two Starfleet officers appear on the bridge. “Welcome aboard the Prometheus gentleman. It’s about time.” says the Doctor. The two Starfleet officers look confused. * * * In Astrometrics, Seven receives a transmission. It is from the Alpha Quadrant. “Is it the Doctor?” Torres asks hopefully. “Yes,” replies Seven. Torres tells her to transport him to sickbay. “Torres to bridge. Captain, It I think he’s back.” * * * In sickbay the air shimmers. A few seconds later the Captain, along with Chakotay and Tuvok, enters. The Doctor is done with the transport. “Doctor! Report.” says Janeway. “I did it!” “You completed your mission?” “Yes! After the Romulans were out of the way.” “Romulans?” asks Tuvok. “They took over the Prometheus. The ship I was on. I managed to turn the tables on them with the help of a fellow EMH.” “You got through to Starfleet?” Chakotay asks, trying to get his attention back to his mission. “Yes. I spoke directly to headquarters. Apparently, Voyager was declared lost fourteen months ago. I set the record straight. I told them everything that has happened to this crew. They said that they would contact your families and tell them the news. They promised that they wouldn’t stop until they found a way to get Voyager home. They wanted me to relay a message to you. They wanted you to know that you’re no longer alone.” After a moment of silence Janeway says, “Suddenly, 60,000 light years seems a lot closer to home.”
