Da Vinchi walks into his workshop with Janeway. Da Vinchi starts to yell. Both Da Vinchi and Janeway are soaking wet. In the background we can hear a crowd of people yelling. “Maybe we underestimated the wingspan.” says Janeway. “Jumping off a bridge was a wise precaution.” she adds. “Against death, yes. Against humiliation, no.” says Da Vinchi. “I have bragged for months about our flight and we almost drown with half of Florence watching.” Da Vinchi says. “Have you ever been to France?” Da Vinchi asks Janeway. She says no. “The King of France is a great admirer of mine. Caterina, we are leaving.” “You’re giving up. You have given up and abandoned your most important works.” “Their is a tavern outside of Paris.......” Da Vinchi says trying to change the subject. The ground starts to shake. Da Vinchi is confused. Chakotay contacts Janeway and tells her that they are under attack. She runs out of the holodeck. “Earthquakes and idiots,” says Da Vinchi. * * * Janeway walks onto the bridge. “Who are they and why are they firing at us?” asks Janeway. Chakotay says that they are not responding. Tuvok tells them that there is no damage. * * * In engineering the warp diagnostic panel disappears as Torres is standing in front of it. Torres contacts the bridge and tells Janeway what has just happened. * * * All over the ship things disappear. The holoemitter, containers, the main computer, and a biobed. * * * “Fire at will.” says Janeway. “I have the will, but not the means.” replies Tuvok. Janeway tells Tuvok to fire the phasers manually. He fires several times and finally hits one of the ships. It is destroyed. The other ships retreat. “I feel like we’ve just been mugged.” says Paris. * * * Chakotay says that the aliens stole the main computer, the warp diagnostic console, the Doctor’s holoemitter, five tricoreders, three phaser rifles, two antimatter ejector, and one month of emergency rations. “No loss there,” Paris says. Janeway stares at him with an amused expression on her face. “Excuse me. Your forgetting the most important thing. My holoemitter!” Janeway says that the most important thing is the main computer processor. Janeway tells the Doctor that they will try to get the holoemitter back. * * * Harry walks into Astrometrics. “Seven! Hey!” Seven says that if he came to talk she doesn’t have time. Seven guesses that he came to extend the sensors using the deep space imaging system. “Yes,” harry says. Seven informs him that she has been working on it for the past two hours. Harry starts to get aggravated. “I came here to work. Let’s have a look.” “Do you doubt my ability to finish the task?” asks Seven. “I realized you were finished. I offered to help. That’s all. I offered to help.” Seven tells Harry that he should start working or leave. Harry starts to get mad. “I’m an easy going person. It takes a lot to ruffle my feathers. But that’s not true for everybody. You need to learn to phrase things more diplomatically.” Seven ignores him and continues to work. “Or not,” adds Harry. * * * It takes Voyager ten days to find and reach the planet where their technology is located. Tuvok says that there are about sixteen other ships in orbit. He guesses that the planet is an active center of commerce. * * * Janeway and Tuvok beam down to one of the cities on the northern continent. Paris and Neelix are on the southern continent. Tuvok is wearing a uniform that is similar to a Starfleet uniform and Janeway is wearing some kind of dress. Janeway says that it never fails to impress her. No matter how vast the differences between cultures someone always has something that something else wants and trade is born. “Or more to the point, theft.” Tuvok says. Tuvok reports that a Federation signature is in the city. Janeway asks him if it is the computer processor. Tuvok says that he doesn’t know and the signature is moving toward them. “Caterina!” Janeway and Tuvok see Da Vinchi standing on top of a flight of stairs. “Caterina!” Da Vinchi yells. He runs down the stairs shoving people out of his way. “Out of my way! Out of my way! Caterina! Welcome to America! Welcome to the New World!” Janeway stares at Da Vinchi in shock. * * * Janeway then sees that Da Vinchi is wearing the holoemitter. “Tell me. What do you think of this new world.” Da Vinchi asks Janeway. “How did you get here?” Janeway asks. “That is a question which I have asked myself many times. Perhaps, when I was packing for France, I was captured by Spanish pirates, rendered unconscious, and dragged across the sea to the new world.” Da Vinchi says. “Tell me Caterina. How did you come to the Americas?” Janeway makes up a story about Portuguese pirates and a few hurricanes. Da Vinchi starts to tell Janeway about his patron who is the prince of the city. While Da Vinchi is doing something else Tuvok tells Janeway that the Da Vinchi program is seeing everything in 16th Century terms. Janeway says that during the attack she left the Da Vinchi program running. She says that it must have been downloaded into the main computer and put into the holoemitter by Da Vinchi’s patron, the prince. Da Vinchi then shows Janeway his new workshop and all of the technology his patron gave him. Janeway asks about Da Vinchi’s patron. Da Vinchi says that his patron is perfect. He is intelligent, but not overly so. He is awed by Da Vinchi’s talent and his purse in inexhaustible. In return for all the things that the patron gives him, Da Vinchi gives his patron his ideas. Da Vinchi explains how there are so many materials. Some are strong and some are light. While Da Vinchi is talking Janeway sees a phaser laying on the table. She reaches for it. “No!” screams Da Vinchi. “Be careful! They have found a way to store the energy of a thunderstorm inside a pistol. Instead of lead balls, lightning bolts come out.” Da Vinchi tells them. Da Vinchi then uses the phaser and shows them what happens. Da Vinchi puts down the phaser. Da Vinchi tells Janeway that they will meet the prince soon. He tells Janeway to be cautious because the prince is ruthless. While Da Vinchi is talking to the Captain, Tuvok reaches for the phaser. Da Vinchi sees him and takes it with him. * * * Paris and Neelix return from the surface with some disturbing news. In the conference room, Chakotay, Paris, Neelix, and an alien are talking. “Who sold you these?” asks Chakotay. “I didn’t come here to be interrogated. I was told you had warp coils to trade.” the alien says. The alien is wearing a red Starfleet command uniform. “I said you could talk to Chakotay.” Paris says. Chakotay tells the alien to leave and give everything he has back to them. The alien changes his mind and tells them where he got Voyager’s stuff. He says that the alien leader, named Tal, uses a translocation device, which he stole, to steal things. Chakotay says that the alien can keep the things that he has. The alien tells Chakotay that the meeting was a waste of his time. “Not really. I think those colors look good on you.” Chakotay says, talking about the Starfleet uniform. The alien is escorted out carrying his phaser rifle with him. * * * The leader of the pirates, Tal, is talking to some future buyers. Tal says that whatever weapon they want he has or can get. “Your prices are said to be unreasonable.” one of the aliens says. Tal says that he could sell weapons to their neighbors who are a violent race. Janeway tells Tuvok that the processor isn’t in the city. She says that they
may have to do business with the prince. “Caterina!” Da Vinchi says as he walks toward Janeway. Janeway tells Tuvok to keep Da Vinchi busy while she talks to Tal. Tuvok objects. Janeway tells him to make small talk. “Vulcans do not make small talk.” says Tuvok. “Improvise,” says Janeway. Tuvok walks up to Da Vinchi and grabs one of the glasses of wine that are in his hands. Da Vinchi tries to walk around Tuvok ,but Tuvok will not let him. “Mr. Da Vinchi. I wish to talk to you. You are most intriguing.” “ Da Vinchi tells Tuvok that he is equally provocative. Da Vinchi asks Tuvok where he is from. Tuvok says that he is from Scandinavia. Da Vinchi asks Tuvok what the Scandinavians think about the new world. Tuvok says that it is interesting. “You seem to be enjoying it.” Tuvok tells Da Vinchi. “Yes. Italy is a fading memory.” Tuvok asks Da Vinchi how he has spent his time in the new world. Da Vinchi says that he has been working on his inventions and art. He also accompanies the prince to his palaces. “Well, this conversation has left me as dry as Vulcan.” “Vulcan?” “Yes, an island off of Sicily. Have you ever been there?” “No,” replies Tuvok. * * * “Good Evening,” says Tal. Janeway walks up to him. “Not so pleasant yet.” Janeway says. “No? How can I change that?” “By having what I want and selling it at a low price.” “The former yes, but the latter........I don’t sell inexpensive merchandise.” Janeway explains to Tal that her client’s computer is outmoded and she needs one that can run a small town. Tal says that that is no small order. He shows Janeway a computer. The computer starts to talk and we realize that it is Voyager’s “Verbal interface. Impressive,” Janeway says. “I couldn’t sell it for anything less that a warship........or something else in your price range.” * * * The next morning Janeway and Tuvok are in Da Vinchi’s workshop when Da Vinchi walks in. “Good morning. Sorry for being so late. The images upon awakening can be quite inspiring.” Da Vinchi hands Janeway and Tuvok a picture of something. “Indeed,” says Tuvok. While Da Vinchi is asking Janeway if she has seen his pen, Tuvok pauses Da Vinchi by touching the holoemitter. Tuvok tells Janeway that they should return to the ship. They can use Da Vinchi’s picture, along with the sensors in the Astrometrics Lab to locate their main computer. “You go to the ship. I’ll stay here with Da Vinchi. He has access to Tal.” Tuvok objects. “This is Leonardo Da Vinchi we’re talking about. He’s has one of the greatest minds in history.” After Janeway is done talking Tuvok beams back to the ship. Da Vinchi asks where Tuvok is. “He went back to the ship.” “You mean the Portuguese are still in the harbor?” “No. They’re.......nearby.” “Mad sea dogs are the Portuguese.” says Da Vinchi * * * In sickbay Seven walks in for her weekly checkup. The Doctor starts to talk to her. “So. What’s new? What’s been happening on the ship?” “Nothing of consequence.” replies Seven. “Lt. Tuvok and Captain Janeway are still on the surface.” “What’s the mood?” “If you are referring to the crew’s morale, they are focused on their mission.” “I understand there was a little fuss in the Mess Hall.” “ It was a trivial misunderstanding.” says Seven. “Oh. You’re in excellent health Seven. Although your optical interface is misaligned...................So what happened?” “Lt. Torres and I were working in the Astrometrics Lab when there was a misunderstanding.” “I understand things got a little heated.” “Lt. Torres became emotional. She showed hostility toward me instead of countering my argument.” “What did she says?” “It is irrelevant. Suffice it to says, I was correct and she was not.” “Details Seven! I want specifics!” “There is no reason to discuss these trivialities.” Seven tells him. “Without my mobile emitter I am a prisoner in this sickbay! I need to know what is going on beyond these walls. Trivial or not.” When the Doctor is finished speaking Seven sighs. “Torres referred to me as an automaton. She also shouted several profane Klingon insults. Shall I translate them for you?” “By all means Sev.......” “Tuvok to Seven of Nine.” “This is Seven of Nine.” “Report to the Astrometrics Lab.” Seven heads for the door. “I’ll be here anytime you want to talk.” says the Doctor. Seven then leaves the sickbay. “All alone,” adds the Doctor. * * * Tuvok tells Seven that they are ready to locate the processor. They scan the surface and find five large storage buildings. They then locate the correct building. Tuvok then contacts Janeway and informs her about the processor’s whereabouts.* * * On the planet Janeway tells Tuvok that if they find the processor they need to beam it to Voyager immediately. When Janeway is done talking she hears a voice. “So it’s Captain, is it?” Tal asks. “I see that you and my hologram are old friends.” Tal points a weapon at Janeway. “Return our processor,” says Janeway. “Or what? You’re in no position to bargain. It will cost your crew a great deal to get you back. I wonder what you are worth.”Tal then takes Janeway’s commbadge. While Tal is talking Janeway sees Da Vinchi slowly creeping up behind Tal. Then Da Vinchi knocks Tal unconscious. Janeway grabs Tal’s weapon. As Janeway gets ready to leave, Da Vinchi says that he is going to stay and explain to Tal what happened and hope Tal doesn’t have him executed. Janeway tells him that he needs to come with her. Da Vinchi says that he will not leave the New World. Janeway tries to tell Da Vinchi that the New World is a prison. “When are our lives free from those who have more power than us?” Da Vinchi asks. “You can’t stay. Europe is your home. They need you in Europe. I need you.” “I will not for for Europe. I will not go for Florence or Milan, but for you Caterina, I will go.”
* * * Harry says that he isn’t picking up Janeway’s commbadge on sensors anymore, but he is picking up the holoemitter. Harry asks if he needs to beam the holoemitter and the Captain aboard. Tuvok says no because if Janeway is okay she will need the hologram to assist her. * * * Janeway and Da Vinchi manage to sneak past the guards and reach the back of the storage facility. In the back there are dozens of pipes. Da Vinchi tells Janeway that they look like the veins of a great animal. “Not now. I need to get into this building and I need to get into it now.” says Janeway. “That is no way to address your master.” “Maestro, inside this building there is something called a computer processor. It can send a beacon to...............to the Portuguese ship.” Then Da Vinchi gets an idea. He says that Tal is like any thief and he fears theft. Da Vinchi says that Tal would probably put the entrance away from the sun so no one could see it. Janeway then finds the door in the back of the building in the shadows. When they enter Janeway starts to scan the building with her tricorder. “You’re compass is speaking to you!” says Da Vinchi. “Yes,” says Janeway. Da Vinchi and Janeway continue to walk through the building. “The prince has done well for himself.” Janeway says. Then Janeway finds the main computer processor. “Do you recognize my voice, computer?” Janeway asks. The computer says that it does. “There is a mechanical woman in there!” shouts Da Vinchi. “In a way,” Janeway tells him. Janeway then creates a small overload in the processor. This will enable Voyager’s transporter to get a lock on the processor. Janeway puts out her hand. She tells Da Vinchi to come close. “I don’t understand,” says Da Vinchi. Janeway tells him that they are going for a ride. All of a sudden one of the guards fires a weapon. He barely misses the processor. Janeway steps away from the processor and fires her weapon. Then the processor is beamed aboard Voyager. The alien guard continues to fire. One of the beams goes directly through Da Vinchi. While Da Vinchi stares at himself Janeway grabs a site to site transporter. He tells Da Vinchi to come close. Da Vinchi asks Janeway what happened. Janeway doesn’t answer. She starts to tell him what they are about to do. A confused Da Vinchi takes Janeway’s hand. * * * On the bridge Kim says that he has got the computer, but he hasn’t gotten Janeway or Da Vinchi. Kim says that they are on the edge of a precipice. Tuvok then tells Chakotay that about thirteen pirate ships are approaching. Harry says that they have to go lower in orbit to lock onto the Captain. B’Elanna contacts the bridge and says that it will take a few minutes to get the processor online. * * * Janeway and Da Vinchi are transported to a large hill. They start to head for the top. Then Da Vinchi demands that Janeway tell him what happened back at the storage facility. He wants to know why the beam passed through him. Janeway then asks him if he were another animal, like a bird, what would his life be like. Da Vinchi says that he would build a nest, eat insects for food, and sing for a mate. “So you would no nothing about the politics of Florence or mathematics?” asks Janeway. “No. My mind would be to small to grasp the concept.” Janeway then tells him that there are some things in life that she knows and he doesn’t. After they are done talking they continue to head for the top of the hill. * * * The pirate ships come closer and closer to Voyager. Voyager gets closer and closer to the surface. They are almost in transporter range. * * * Da Vinchi says that he has a means of escape. Once they reach the top Janeway is amazed to find a flying machine. Da Vinchi says that he made the wings wider, like Janeway suggested. Janeway checks the materials that were used to build the machine. She says that they are strong enough. Then a phaser beam whizzes right past the flying machine. Janeway and Da Vinchi get behind it and start to push it. In a couple of seconds they jump on. Tal and one of his guards stop running and watch as Janeway and Da Vinchi sail through the air. The glider gets higher and higher. “We’re flying!” shouts Da Vinchi. “Like the birds!” Janeway says. “Like the birds!” Da Vinchi echoes. * * * The ships are almost at Voyager’s position. Ensign Kim announces that he has a lock on Janeway and the holoemitter. He says that they are on some sort of contraption in midair. He then gets ready to transport them. * * * While Janeway and Da Vinchi are flying through the air they are beamed into Voyager’s cargo bay. * * * Voyager goes into high warp just as the pirate ships are closing in. * * * In the holodeck, a couple of days later, Janeway and Da Vinchi are talking. Da Vinchi says that he is going to see the King of France. He is going to build another flying machine and the king and him are going to fly off of his castle. “I think that flight of ours went to your head.” says Janeway. She tells Da Vinchi that he doesn’t have the materials needed to build the machine. Da Vinchi says that he will find a way to build it. “Give my regards to the King of France.” Janeway says as as she escorts Da Vinchi to his carriage. As they leave we see a drawing of a bird on Da Vinchi’s desk.

My Thoughts
This was one of those fun episodes. My favorite scene was with the Doctor and Seven in Sickbay. There was no real character development for anyone, except for Da Vinchi, in this episode. One thing that I was wondering was why Tal, the pirate, leader, didn't shoot Da Vinchi's glider down out of the air when Janeway and Da Vinchi were escaping. I guess that could never have happened if Janeway was to survive. This was an okay episode. There wasn't anything wrong with it, but it wasn't a great episode.
