"That guy is worse than a Ferengi." Tom Paris

Synopsis
Voyager fires a blue torpedo. It flies through space and destroys its target. * * * On the bridge of Voyager, Janeway watches the torpedo as it destroys its target. An alien standing by Janeway starts to talk. 3The target was solid monotanium, ten meters thick. It was also protected by a strong force field.2 3Impressive,2 Janeway replies. 3I1m glad you think so. It1s not wise to travel through Hirogen space good weaponry. I1ve seen scuttled freighters that were better armed than Voyager.2 3I1m sure you have.2 3When I install the isometric cannon you1ll be able to penetrate the shields of any known vessel. Other species will know to avoid Voyager.2 3You1ve made your point, Mr. Kovin. I want the cannon. I1m prepared to give you Astrometric charts spanning twelve sectors. You1ll find them unusually precise.2 3Even the most sophisticated charts can become obsolete. One random anomaly and they are no longer accurate. However I may be persuaded if you could include the technology that made the carts.2 3Sorry, but the technology was specifically designed for this ship. It would be of no use to you. I am prepared to give you a generous supply of isolinear processing chips.2 3How generous a supply?2 asks Kovin. 3One hundred,2 replies Janeway. 3One fifty.2 3One fifteen.2 3One twenty - Five.2 3Done,2 Janeway says. 3Mr. Kovin, will you be supervising the installation of the cannon?2 3For a small fee.2 3Five more chips, no more.2 3It1s good to see that the art of negotiating isn1t lost in you, Captain.2 Kovin says as he leaves the bridge. After Kovin leaves Janeway sits in her chair. 3That guy is worse than a Ferengi!2 Paris exclaims. Janeway gives Paris an amused look and then turns to Chakotay. 3Seven has a knack with alien technology.2 3Are you ready to give her complete access to the ship1s systems?2 Chakotay asks. 3She1s been behaving herself lately.2 * * * Chakotay walks into the Astrometrics Lab to see Seven working on something. 3What are you trying to do?2 he asks her. 3I am decoding the message that Starfleet sent us a couple of weeks ago.2 3Any progress?2 3None,2 Seven replies. She tells Chakotay that she is working on a new decoding algorithm. 3You have a new assignment. You are going to help Kovin install the isometric cannon.2 3I would rather not. He is not efficient.2 3Maybe so, but the Captain is giving you more responsibility.2 3The captain only gives me more responsibility when she needs my expertise.2 3You violated her trust. If you want to get it back, you1re going to have to earn it one step at a time.2 3I will report the engineering.2 Chakotay then watches Seven walk out of the Astrometrics Lab. * * * 3We need to install isolinear buffer circuits here and here.2 Seven says, while pointing at a schematic of Voyager. 3No, all of the buffers would have to fail simultaneously for any damage to be done.2 3We like to play it safe.2 Torres tells Kovin. Torres tells Seven that she is going to see if they have any generators. Seven and Kovin walk over to one of the engineering consoles. 3What are you doing?2 an annoyed Kovin asks Seven. 3I am reconfiguring the tactical control systems.2 3You need to use a specific protocol. Let me take care of it.2 3That is not necessary.2 3No. No! They need to be arranged in sequence!2 Kovin then puts his hand on Seven1s shoulder and gently pushes Seven out of the way. Seven then grabs the collar of his uniform and punches him in the face. Kovin flies through the air and lands beside a console. He has a bloody nose and is looking at Seven with a look of shock on his face. Torres and Ashmore rush to Seven1s side and restrain her. 3Seven, stop!2 shouts Torres. Seven stops struggling and stares at Kovin. * * * In the sickbay, Kovin complains about the events that took place e in engineering. 3You see what she did to me, Captain! She shattered it!2 Kovin says about his broken nose. 3Easily repaired,2 the Doctor says dryly. 3Do you have any idea why she attacked you?2 3No! It was unprovoked! She came at me like an animal!2 3Well I wouldn1t put it that way.2 Torres says. 3I was at a console about fifty meters away. I heard him raise his voice. He then held her arm.2 3I barely touched her!2 shouts Kovin. 3It was a gentle gesture to move her out of the way so I could get to the console. Then all of a sudden she turned on me, attacked me!2 3What did you say?2 3I told her how to arrange the systems properly.2 3And that1s when Seven knocked him to the ground. Ashmore and I had to hold her back.2 Torres explains to Janeway. 3She would have killed me! She1s dangerous!2 The Doctor grabs Kovin1s head and looks into his eyes. 3It1s a miracle you survived. Now hold still so I can treat you properly.2 After a few seconds Kovin starts to complain again. 3Why are you questioning me? You should be disciplining your crew member!2 3Believe me, I1ll deal with her. You have my sincere apologies.2 After Janeway leaves the Doctor says, 3There good as new.2 * * * 3Well......here we are again. I1m tired of having this conversation. You know what I1m going to say, and I know how you are going to respond. This is pointless.2 3Shall I restrict myself from the ship1s major systems?2 Seven asks Janeway. 3I think we1ve established that traditional disciplinary methods don1t work with you. The question is : what will?2 3Are you asking my opinion?2 3I suppose I am. Frankly, I1m running out of options. Throwing you in the brig won1t solve anything, and neither will slapping you on the wrist. It1s not that I don1t understand your feelings about Kovin. There are a few times when I would have liked to pop him in the nose myself. But you have to learn the difference between having an impulse and acting upon one. Does that make any sense to you?2 3Yes. I will give it more thought.2 3That1s a start.2 * * * 3I heard there was some excitement in engineering this morning.2 the Doctor tells Seven, in the sickbay. 3When I started to help you with your social skills, I1m certain I didn1t include a boxing lesson. You weren1t hurt were you?2 3No.2 As the Doctor picks up his medical tricorder and starts to scan Seven, she becomes paranoid. 3Still tense?2 the Doctor asks. 3Perhaps,2 Seven replies. 3I understand the burden that you carry having to deal with someone who falls short of our excellence. Although I usually respond with a devastating quip, rather then a left hook.2 the smiling Doctor says. 3You have to accept that few life forms will reach our high standards. Whenever you become irritated, remember that they can1t help it.2 All of a sudden the Doctor frowns. 3Hmmm. I1m reading increased engramatic activity. Your adrenaline levels are also high. If you were a typical Human I would consider this a moodswing, but with your unique physiology I1d like to rule out the possibility.2 The Doctor instructs Seven to lay down on the biobed. As she lays down she has a flashback. In it, she is on an operating table. She is then restrained. Seven is back in sickbay. The Doctor asks her if she has had any headaches. 3No,2 she replies. Seven then has another flashback. Someone puts a device near her ocular implant. Seven is again back in the sickbay. The Doctor starts to restrain Seven to the biobed, by putting the arch up. All of a sudden Seven starts to panic. 3Let me out!2 3I will. Stay calm.2 the Doctor instructs her. 3No. No more procedures! Stay away!2 Seven shouts. 3Seven, what are you afraid of?2 the Doctor asks, sounding puzzled. 3I do not know.2 * * * 3She1s experienced apprehension, dizziness, I was finally able to sedate her.2 3Is it her cortical implants?2 asks Janeway. 3I don1t think so. I think we1re dealing with memory suppression. I could try to integrate the memories into Seven1s consciousness. I may be able to use standard therapeutic regression.2 3I wasn1t aware that you were programmed with standard therapeutic techniques2 3I wasn1t. In the absence of a ship1s counselor, I1ve been learning about it. Now I1ll be even more useful to you than I am now.2 the Doctor says smiling. Janeway leaves the sickbay and the Doctor smiles triumphantly. * * * Seven and the Doctor are in the Borg cargo bay. The Doctor is telling Seven how he has created a procedure to get her repressed memories. 3What does this procedure involve?2 asks Seven. 3First I am putting you at ease by being here in the cargo bay. Then I will use your cortical probes to reinforce your neural pathways. I1ll guide you through everything.2 3Proceed,2 Seven tells the Doctor. 3Close your eyes. Clear your mind. Don1t think or analyze anything.2 3Seven opens her eyes. 3My mind is now clear.2 Then the Doctor sighs. 3Seven, this isn1t an exercise in efficiency. Close your eyes. Breathe deeply. Concentrate on my voice. Leave the cargo bay. Allow your mind to drift. Tell me the first image that you see.2 3A medical tricorder,2 Seven says. She then starts to tell the Doctor the exact size of the tricorder. 3That1s enough,2 the Doctor tells her. 3You1re in sickbay. How do you feel about the tricorder?2 3It disturbs me. I1m afraid it will hurt me.2 3Is there anything else that causes you anticipate pain?2 3The diagnostic bed. It closes around me. I1m restrained Confined.2 Seven is silent. 3What?2 3Kovin is restraining me. I want to get away, but I can1t. Kovin is using some kind of instrument on me. I didn1t recall this before.2 3What?2 3He performed a surgical procedure on me. He extracted Borg technology from my body. He violated me.2 * * * 3This surgical procedure. When did it happen?2 3I don1t know. The details are vague. I only see images.2 3Are you sure it was Kovin? Did you see him?2 3Yes,2 replies Seven. 3Was it on Voyager?2 3No, it must have been on the surface when we were testing the firearms.2 3Think about that. Describe it to me.2 3I see a stone.2 3Think beyond the stone.2 3I was on the surface with Lt. Paris. We were testing the handheld rifles.2 * * * Tom picks up one of the rifles and fires it a couple of times. 3Definitely not Starfleet issue. What do you think?2 he asks Seven. 3Crude but efficient,2 she replies. 3It1s not as accurate as our rifles., but its a lot more easy to handle. I wouldn1t mind carrying one of these around next time we meet the Hirogen.2 Paris says. 3The targeting mechanism could be augmented with a thermal guidance sensor. It would increase the accuracy by twenty percent.2 Kovin then tells Seven that he can fix it himself. 3Care to join me?2 he asks. Seven agrees. 3I1d like to try some of the other firearms.2 Paris says. 3Go right ahead.2 Kovin tells him.* * * 3Kovin then took me to a small lab.2 Seven tells the Doctor. 3Describe it.2 the Doctor tells Seven. 3It was poorly illuminated. I saw technology that was unfamiliar to me. I assumed it was where Kovin worked on his weapons.2 * * * 3These weapons are thoron based.2 Seven tells Kovin. 3Most of these weapons are.2 replies Kovin. 3Thoron can be unstable in weapons.2 3Not if you compensate for any instabilities. Watch.2 Then he turns the rifle toward Seven. The weapon hums as it powers up. Then there is a bright flash.* * * 3He fired on you?2 the Doctor asks. 3Yes. I remember it now.2 3What happened next?2 3I am not sure.2 3Concentrate,2 the Doctor says. 3See the lab in your mind.2 3There was a bright light in my eyes.2 3Was Kovin in the room?2 3Yes,2 Seven says. 3There was also a woman assisting him.2 * * * 3This is Borg technology.2 the woman says surprised.2 3That1s what I1ve been telling you.2 Kovin says.* * * 3They bound me to the diagnostic bed.2 3Then what did they do to you?2 3They scanned me. They used a growth medium to activate my implants.2 * * * 3They1re multiplying,2 Kovin tells his assistant.* * * 3They put a device near near my head and removed my ocular implant. Then some of the implants in my arm were activated.2 3Which ones?2 3They extracted nanoprobes from my assimilation tubules. I was helpless.2 3You couldn1t be expected to. You were restrained. What happened next?2 3They brought the nanoprobes over to another person. He was also restrained and unconscious. Then they.......assimilated him.2 * * * 3Well done,2 Kovin1s assistant tells him.* * * 3The next thing I knew, I was back in Kovin1s lab. He claimed that the rifle had overloaded, but he was lying. They attacked me.2 * * * 3Do you have a dermal regenerator?2 Seven asks Kovin. 3Of course,2 Kovin replies. He then reaches for the dermal regenerator. * * * 3I1ll inform the Captain.2 the Doctor says. * * * 3There is no doubt that Seven is the victim of a brutal assault.2 the Doctor says in the conference room. Paris, Janeway, and Tuvok are also there. 3How is she?2 asks the Captain. 3As well as can be expected. She1s regenerating in her alcove. Her emotional recovery will take some time.2 3We need to know how much of her story we can believe. Did you find any physical evidence of a procedure?2 asks Janeway. 3No, Kovin might have used Seven1s own nanoprobes to repair any cellular damage. She remembers Kovin extracting them.2 3Do you believe that those memories are fact?2 asks Tuvok. 3Yes.2 3Recovered memories often prove to be unreliable.2 Tuvok continues. 3Yes,but these memories are recent and she remembered them as soon as I removed the mechanism.2 3Human memory is rarely perfect.2 3What are you saying Tuvok? That Seven is making this up?2 asks Tom. 3No, but Seven has experienced hallucinations before.2 3That was from the ship where she was assimilated. That1s not the case now. I1ve confirmed it. We1re not talking about conjecture, we1re talking about science!2 Janeway tells the Doctor to calm down. Then she starts to speak. 3Seven is making serious accusations. I won1t dismiss them. If she was assaulted I can1t stand around and do nothing.Just one nanoprobe could lead to disaster.2 * * * 3That1s offensive, absurd! She1s obviously lying!2 3Why would she do that?2 Janeway asks Kovin. She and Kovin are in her ready room. 3I don1t know. She1s your crew member. First she attacks me, and then she makes up some ridiculous story! Is this some kind of negotiating tactic?!2 3Why did it take you two hours to modify the weapons?2 3She insisted on absolute precision!2 3We have confirmed that she was exposed to a thoron blast.2 3She was! The power cell overloaded! I reported the accident immediately. I apologized. Then she asked for a dermal regenerator. She used it on the arm with the Borg implants.2 3Which you recalled as Borg?2 3Yes. She told me that she was a Borg herself.2 3Did you ever consider what value it might have as a weapon?2 3Is that what you think I1ve done?2 3Even one nanoprobe can be extremely dangerous. I have to know if you took any. I need to examine your lab.2 3No! You1ve gone to far!2 3Then I1ll have to contact the authorities.2 3You're willing to risk our trade agreement for one crew1s hallucinations?2 3Yes. Will you cooperate?2 3I don1t seem to have much of a choice.2 Kovin says angrily. * * * 3How did the discharge occur?2 Tuvok asks. He is in his security office. Kovin is sitting directly across from him. 3It was a careless mistake! How many times do I have to apologize?2 3I am not seeking a statement of remorse.2 3Then what are you seeking? Are you trying to trick me into confessing? Well you can1t because I1ve done nothing wrong!2 3One member of this crew claims that you have.2 3Seven is very fortunate. She has a whole crew leaping to her defense. I have no one.2 3The authorities will be here soon.2 3You mean the magistrate? He won1t help me. He1s more concerned about diplomatic relations with people like you.2 3Surely he will want the truth.2 3You don1t understand. Our people depend on trade with alien species. There are certain regulations that have to be followed. If you are even accused of violating one it is a serious offense. The damage is already done.2 3This investigation will be conducted in a fair and impartial manner.2 3You strike me as a man of your word. I f you tell me that I1ll receive a fair trial, I believe you.2 * * * The Doctor and Seven are in sickbay. The Doctor wants to talk to her. 3How are you feeling?2 3I am undamaged.2 3You may be physically healed, but the emotional damage is still there, and you have to deal with it.2 3For what purpose?2 3Kovin attacked you! He violated your rights as an individual! You need to understand any resentment you might be feeling.2 3Resentment is a Human trait. It has no structure. No purpose.2 3You need to accept that you now have feelings, and suppressing them can damage you! What would happen if Kovin had tried to steal nanoprobes directly from the Collective?2 3He would have been assimilated.2 3Precisely. Which is why he chose you. He could get what he wanted without taking any risks.2 3My individuality made me vulnerable.2 Seven realizes. 3Exactly! He violated your individuality. What he did is affront to everything Borg and Human.2 3It was the act of a coward.2 Seven says angrily. 3Yes! He was willing to use you in the cruelest way so he could make weapons and sell them.2 3I believe I am experiencing anger.2 3Good! That1s a healthy, normal response. When he gets what he deserves, you are going to feel much better!2.* * * In Kovin1s laboratory, Kovin is joined by the Magistrate, The Doctor, and Tuvok. 3This way Magistrate. My lab.2 3There are no diagnostic tables.2 the Doctor observes. 3There are only workbenches here.2 The Doctor then tells Tuvok to scan for signs that the room has been recently altered. The Doctor then notes that Seven1s cellular residue is on every instrument in Kovin1s Lab. 3Of course. She was here!2 The Doctor then questions Kovin about several of the instruments. He then finds out that some of the nanoprobes are on the instruments. They match Seven1s genome. He asks the Magistrate permission to take the instruments to Voyager so he can run more conclusive scans. The Magistrate tells him that he can. Then the Doctor finds the table where Seven was hit by the thoron blast. The Doctor then smiles. He tells the Magistrate that the nanoprobes should be dormant, but they are activated in a very specific pattern. I1ve seen enough. Kovin there is sufficient evidence here to detain you.2 the Magistrate tells him. 3No. Please, don1t. No!2 Kovin then reaches for a weapon. 3I trusted you! You said that this would be an impartial trial! But you1re all determined to find what you want!2 Then Kovin disappears in a column of swirling light. * * * On Voyager, Janeway gets a message from Tuvok. He tells them that Kovin has escaped. Then Ensign Kim tells the Captain that Kovin beamed to a vessel three hundred meters above the surface. He warns her that the ship is powering up. Janeway asks the Magistrate permission to follow Kovin. 3Yes, but I would like to join you as well.2 3Very well.2 Janeway then has the away team and the Magistrate beamed to Voyager. Voyager then sets an intercept course for Kovin1s vessel. Just as Chakotay is about to engage the tractor beam, Kovin fires a white pulse at Voyager. There is a bright flash. When they look at the screen again, Kovin is gone. He has disappeared from sensors. 3The fact that he1s running shows that he has something to hide.2 observes Chakotay. * * * Voyager picks up Kovin1s warp signature and is in pursuit. Janeway, Seven, the Doctor, and Tuvok, are in the science lab. Janeway is looking into a blue device. 3This isn1t getting us anywhere.2 she says wearily. She then rubs her eyes. 3Seven1s residue is on everything, but that would be true even if Seven only touched them! Nothing implicates Kovin! I have a bad feeling about this.2 3Kovin asked for an impartial trial, and I believe it has been.2 Tuvok says. 3It has, but I had some preconceptions about him. They may have influenced my judgment. The strongest evidence against him are the nanoprobes the Doctor found.2 Tuvok then suggests that they could recreate the blast by giving Seven a hypospray with the same energy as a thoron rifle. 3Is this really necessary? Hasn1t she been through enough trauma already?2 the Doctor asks. 3I don1t want to make accusations against an innocent man. We need to have concrete evidence.2 Tuvok gets a hypospray. He tells Seven that he will give her the hypospray. Then he will take a tissue sample. 3It will not be painful.2 3I am angry.2 Seven says. 3I know, but be patient. We1ll have our answers soon.2 Janeway tells her. Tuvok then gives Seven the hypospray. 3Let1s see what we1ve got.2 Janeway says. She looks into the device. She remains silent. After a couple of seconds she looks up. She has a look of worry on her face. 3Doctor, I think you better come and take a look at this.2 The Doctor looks inside the device. He too remains quiet. 3What is it?2 asks Seven. 3The nanoprobes are regenerating exactly the same way that they were in the lab.2 the Doctor tells her. 3It doesn1t matter. He is guilty!2 Seven shouts. 3Is it possible? Just possible that the memories are not accurate?2 Janeway asks Seven. 3How could they not be accurate?2 3During your time with the Borg, you were subjected to several invasive medical procedures. You witnessed several other people being assimilated. Could that be what you were remembering?2 Seven looks toward the Doctor. 3You know that is not right! Tell them!2 3Everything led me to believe that you were a victim. Your extreme response toward Kovin, your fear in sickbay. I believed that Kovin had suppressed your memory. But if I am to be impartial, I need to acknowledge that your physiology is still a mystery to me. I can1t ignore that the evidence supports Kovin, not yours.2 3You helped me to understand what Kovin did to me, now you are denying it!2 3No one is abandoning you, Seven.2 Janeway informs her. 3We need to find Kovin and tell him what we have found.2 3The Doctor told me I would feel better when Kovin got what he deserved. I want him punished. I won1t settle for anything less!2 * * * Janeway and Tuvok rush to the bridge. Voyager is now in range with Kovin1s ship. Harry tries to hail him, but he will not respond. 3He1s charging weapons!2 shouts Harry. Before Kovin can fire they manage to hail him and get a response. 3We1ve made a mistake. We know now that you are innocent. Stand down your weapons.2 Janeway tells him. 3No!. It1s a trap!2 3No it isn1t. We1ve found some information that supports you. We now know that your rifle did overload.2 Suddenly, Kovin cuts the transmission. 3He1s firing!2 announces Kim. Kovin continues to fire. 3Shields down to eighty - two percent!2 Kovin continues to fire blue pulses at Voyager. The ship shakes. Kim then announces that Kovin1s power grid is overloading and his ship is going to be destroyed. 3Beam him off of that ship!2 Kim says that something is scattering his beam. 3Keep trying.2 Kovin stops firing at Voyager. Janeway tells Kim to try and beam him off again. On the view screen, Kovin1s vessel explodes. 3I can1t find anything to lock on to, Captain.2 Harry tells her. 3Stand down red alert. Set a course back to the colony.2 Janeway then looks at Seven. * * * After three days, the matter with Kovin has been solved. In sickbay, Seven is seeing the Doctor for her weekly checkup. 3You1re in perfect health. See you next week.2 Seven tells the Doctor that she is disturbed. 3Preoccupied by Kovin1s death? Join the club.2 Seven then tells the Doctor that when she was a Borg, she destroyed millions of beings, but she didn1t feel anything. She tells the Doctor that she doesn1t enjoy the feeling she is having. 3Will it subside?2 3You1ll have to wait.2 3I don1t want to wait.2 Seven then turns and leaves sickbay. 3Maybe I don1t.2 the Doctor mutters to himself. * * * The Doctor heads to the Captain1s ready room. He tells her that he wants to return to the state he was in when he was first activated. 3Request denied. I1m not going to let you turn back the clock for one mistake. No matter how you feel.2 3I1m supposed to preserve life, not destroy it.2 Janeway tells the Doctor that she doesn1t want him to restart his program. 3 We all feel bad. Deleting the burden is the last thing we should do.2 Then the Doctor turns and leaves Janeway alone in the ready room.

My Thoughts
This episode was to Voyager as Sons and Daughters was to Deep Space Nine. It was a good episode, but the plot didn't really fit in to the arc. Some of it did, incuding the part about buying weapons to protect Voyager from the Hirogen. I was glad to see that Voyager was trying to get something to replace the small supply of photon torpedoes. This episode had some good character development for Seven of Nine and the Doctor. Jeri Ryan and Robert Picardo did good acting jobs. While watching the episode I thought that Kovin had stolen the nanoprobes, but he didn't. All in all Retrospect was a good episode, but in my opinion it didn't really fit into the arc like Hunters and Prey did. I think that next week's episode should be an exciting conclusion to the Hirogen arc. One more thing. I will have a review of the Hirogen arc after the arc is over.
