"She's feeling vulnerable and here you are going on about severed nerves and major surgery." Harry to Tom

Synopses
On an alien vessel a hologram is pulling a dead person across a room. Then he gets a cloth and starts to scrub everything. All of a sudden he starts to shimmer. He walks over to a console and sends out a distress signal. “I’m a hd21 isomorphic projection. There’s been an accident. The crew is dead. Please help me.” * * * In the Mess Hall everyone is gathered around a table. Tom Paris is talking. “We rigged the security console so every time he accessed it it said live long and prosper.” Then Kim starts to talk. “There was nobody available to fix the console so Tuvok had to extend his Vulcan patience.” “Just when he thought it was over, he entered his quarters and the replicator says......” “Live long and prosper.” finishes Kim. All of the crew members in the Mess Hall start to laugh. Then Janeway starts to speak. “The first time I met Tuvok, he dressed me down in front of three Starfleet admirals. My ego was bruised a little, but of course he was right. Over the past nine years I’ve come to rely on Tuvok’s insightful and unfailing, logical device. It is my pleasure to award you the rank of Lieutenant Commander.” Janeway then gets up and places a gold, Starfleet pip on the top of Tuvok’s uniform. Tuvok then gives a speech. “Had I known that this would include ritual humiliation, I might have declined.” Tuvok and Kim start to laugh. “I will honor the responsibility that comes with this promotion. Over the years I have come to respect members of this crew. Others I have learned to tolerate. As chief security officer I assure you that I will make this a safe journey home. I would now like to share a Vulcan sentiment..........live long and prosper.” Everybody gets up and starts talking. B’Elanna walks toward the door of the Mess Hall and Tom runs to catch up with her. “This is ridiculous. It’s been three days. What you said about.......I mean you saying you loved me....you were seconds away from death.......did you even mean it?” “Oh I meant it.” Paris kisses B’Elanna just as the Doctor walks up beside them. “I was just leaving.” Torres says walking away. The Doctor says that he is recruiting him for sickbay duty. “You want me to be the new nurse?” “If that’s the term you wish to use, yes. You will have three duty shifts a week. Bring a tricorder and a smile.” * * * In the Mess Hall Chakotay tells Kim that he will be working with Seven on the new Astrometrics Lab. “Make her feel like part of the team.” says Chakotay. “Part of the team.” Harry repeats. * * * In the Mess Hall Janeway asks Neelix if he has dealt with the Uritheans. Neelix tells Janeway that the Urithian delegate says they are looking forward to trading with such an advanced ship. . “Excellent job, Neelix. Maybe we should consider this your first assignment as ambassador.” Janeway says jokingly. Then Janeway gets a call from the bridge. The officer tells the Captain that she better bring the Doctor. * * * On the bridge Janeway and the Doctor watch the distress call from the isomorph projection. “We’ve got to help him.” says the Doctor. He tells the officer at ops to locate the vessel. “When we reach the vessel I’ll lead an away team.” “I don’t recall giving you a promotion today, Doctor.” “Well, I’m the obvious choice for this mission.” the Doctor says. Janeway tells him that she doesn’t want his holoemitter damaged. “I’ll bring Lt. Torres. She knows more about my holoemitter than anyone.” Janeway agrees. She says that Voyager will meet with the Urithians and the Doctor and Torres will take a shuttle to the hologram’s ship. * * * Harry walks into the Borg cargo bay. “Seven?” “I am here. Am I to work with you?” “Yes, if its a bad time I could always come back later.” “You seem apprehensive.” “Not at all.” “The last time I worked with you I struck you on the base of the skull.” “Those things happen.” “I assure you, it will not happen again.” Seven is holding a padd that has Borg alpha numeric code on it . “I’ve always wanted to learn the Borg language.” Harry says. “That is hard to believe.” “It was just a joke.” “I know the concept of humor.” * * * On the shuttlecraft the Doctor is pacing. “Relax Doctor. We’ll find the ship.” “It’s not the ship I’m worried about. I’m worried about leaving Mr. Paris in charge of my sickbay.” “Don’t worry. He’s a responsible guy.” “I’m suppose you would know.” “What’s that supposed to mean?” “You and Mr. Paris seem to be close friends.” “It’s none of your business if I have a relationship and who I have it with.” Torres yells. “Sorry, I didn't know I had struck a nerve. Perhaps you would like a tranquilizer?” * * * Torres and the Doctor approach the alien ship and beam aboard. Torres starts working on the controls while the Doctor looks around. Torres manages to turn the lights on. “Any sign of the hologram?” asks Torres. The Doctor says not yet. Torres tells the Doctor that she wants to make sure his holoemitter made it through the transporter okay. “You have a good bedside manner, for a Klingon. I wonder what kind of bedside manner Mr. Paris has.” Torres glares at the Doctor. “It was a rhetorical question.” Then we see the isomorph projection. He walks up behind Torres and the Doctor. He is holding some kind of hammer. Then his program shimmers and he disappears. The hammer clatters loudly on the floor. Torres and the Doctor spin around. Then the hologram appears again. “I’m sorry. I didn’t mean to frighten you. You’re a isomorph?” he asks the Doctor. “The term we use is hologram. Are you the one who sent the distress call?” “Yes. Are you a hologram?” the isomorph asks B’Elanna. No,” relies B’Elanna. “Then you’re organic?” “Yes.” Torres says that she need to access the isomorph’s matrix. “Why?” “You’re program is obviously malfunctioning. I want to try to fix it.” The isomorph shows Torres where the controls are. The Doctor asks the isomorph what happened. The isomorph says that they left the home world eight months ago. Just a couple of weeks ago two crew members landed on an alien planet. They contracted a virus. When they came back the other crew members caught the virus. The isomorph didn’t know anything about medicine and they died. While he is talking Torres comes back. She tells the two them that she is going to the lower deck to access the isomorph’s main controls. “No!” shouts the isomorph. He explains that antimatter radiation has flooded the bottom deck. He tells B’Elanna that she can activate his controls from the deck they are on. He then shows her the controls. After B’Elanna begins her work the isomorph asks the Doctor what his name is. “I don’t have name. It’s a long story.” * * * Kim and Seven are working in the cargo bay. Kim tells her that she misaligned the assembly. “Impossible,” says Seven. Harry tells her to check. Seven checks it and sees that Harry is right. “It must have been my humanity reasserting itself.” “What do you do for fun down here in Cargo Bay 2.” “Fun?” “Entertainment. Stuff you do in your off hours.” “I regenerate, look over Starfleet logs, and contemplate my existence.” “That’s a lot of time alone.” “It certainly is.” Seven then reaches for the console and opens a small hatch. Inside the hatch it is all red and giving off a lot of energy. Seven starts to move her hand inside the hatch. “What are you doing?!” Harry yells. He tells her that there is a lot of energy in there. Seven says that she can withstand the energy. “Maybe, but we have certain rules and regulations. I says that we do this by the book. Okay?” “Okay,” Seven replies. * * * “Do you know what it’s like to be trapped inside a small room all of your life, wondering what’s out there?” the isomorph asks the Doctor. “As a matter of fact, I do. I had to ask for what I deserved. I think that I have now earned the respect as an equal aboard Voyager.” Then the isomorph starts to explain how badly he was treated by the organics. The Doctor suggests that he should take up some hobbies like music and art. The isomorph explains that the organics would not allow it. Then he starts to rub the console with a cloth. “What are you doing?” asks the Doctor. “Nothing. I’m just sterilizing the ship. I’m a little fastidious about germs. That must sound strange to you.”
“Not at all. I’ve been known to act a little strange now and then.” * * * B'Elanna is holding a tube with bursts of energy coming out of the end. “Are you hungry. You require nutrients.” B'Elanna spins around nervously and sees the isomorph holding a tray of food. The isomorph starts to step closer to her. “Be careful! You could destabilize your matrix!” B’Elanna then deactivates the cube. “How stupid of me,” the isomorph says. B’Elanna thanks the isomorph for the food. B’Elanna takes a small bite of the food. The isomorph laughs. “You nibble like a fish.” he tells her. “I’ll take that as a compliment.” “Oh it is. I’ve never seen a fish before. I think they are more passive then organics.” Then he asks B’Elanna if there is anything that he can do to help. “After lunch you can help me access your matrix.” B’Elanna tells him. B’Elanna notices that the isomorph looks troubled. “Is anything wrong?” “It’s just that I’ve never seen the ship like this. It’s almost like it’s part of me.” “I understand.” B’Elanna says. “How can you? I exist as pure energy. You depend on food and water to survive. You are a repulsive creature and I am ashamed to be made in your image!” shouts the isomorph. B’Elanna stares at him. “Apologies, apologies. I have created some hostilities for organics. My crew treated me badly. It wasn’t meant for you.” “You have to remember that we are here to help you. Thanks for the rations.” Then B’Elanna hurries away from the isomorph. * * * “We’ve got a problem.” “With what?” “The isomorph,” B’Elanna says. “Explain,” the Doctor tells her. “I’ve just spent the last ten minutes listening to his views on biological life. Let’s just says that they were a bit unconventional. Did you realize that we organics are a bunch inferior, disgusting animals?” “Now that you mention it....” the Doctor starts to say. B’Elanna continues to talk. “Then he starts to rant about how much he despises organics. I didn’t think I would get out without a fight.” “I admit he’s a bit inept.” “Inept! He’s a lunatic!” “That’s not a very sound diagnostic.” “He was lying to us about the bottom deck. I checked and it’s not flooded with radiation.” “Why would he do that?” “Maybe he’s hiding something.” “I understand your concerns. I recognized that he has some behavioral difficulties, but he has been trapped in a small room for his whole existence. He hasn’t had any interaction with organic beings. Do you recall my own behavior when I was first activated?” “How could I forget? You were a big pain in the........” “My point is,” the Doctor says interrupting B’Elanna,”It took me a while to master the social graces.” “I realize that he’s a fellow hologram, but I want the ability to shut down his program if I have to. I’m going to the lower deck.” Just then the isomorph appears. “I was just leaving,” B’Elanna tells him. The isomorph is holding a holographic fish bowl with a holographic fish inside. He tells the Doctor that the fish’s name is spectrum. “Do you have a pet?” asks the isomorph. “No, it wouldn't be appropriate in a sickbay.” * * * Seven tells Kim that the node they are looking at contains Borg navigational data. Seven says that they need to have an irratical dislocation. “What?” “We need to pull it out.” Seven explains. Kim tells Seven that on the count of three they will pull together. Seven is confused. Kim tells her that when he counts to three they will pull. Kim counts to three and they pull the node out. When they pull it out Seven slices her hand. She looks at it. “As a Borg I would have regenerated in seconds. I have become weak.” “No more than the rest of us. I’ll take you to sickbay.” Harry helps Seven up and they leave the cargo bay. * * * In sickbay Tom talks to Seven. “Half a millimeter more and you would have severed your carpel nerve. I might have had to operate. You’re a mere mortal now. As your family Doctor I suggest that you be more careful.” Tom finishes scanning Seven’s hand. “I’ll meet you in the cargo bay.” Harry tells Seven as she leaves. Once Seven has left the sickbay, Harry starts to yell at Tom. “What kind of bedside manner was that? She’s feeling vulnerable and here you are going on about severed nerves and major surgery!” “Take it easy! I was just trying to lighten the mood. Besides, she wasn’t upset.” “Yes she was! I can see it on her face.” “ You seem awfully protective of her. This morning you were dreading being in the same room with her.” “I’ve gotten to know her a little better.” While Kim is talking Paris sits in the Doctor’s chair. “Most people don’t know this, but she isn’t just another Borg automaton. She’s very complex.” “Really?” “Yes. She’s got a sense of humor. It’s a little offbeat, subtle maybe ,and she’s incredibly intelligent.” “She ought to be. She assimilated enough people.” “”See! It’s Borg this and Borg that. You can’t resist making a joke! There’s a woman in there, if you take the time to look.” “Harry do you have a crush on her?” “No. Not at all. Maybe just a little.” “I’ve seen that look in your eyes just before you fall head over heels. You always go for the tough ones Harry. What was it last time, a hologram? My advice to you is don’t.” “I’m just trying to make her feel like part of the team.” “Part of the team? You sound like Chakotay. I know that she’s beautiful and smart and I’m sure she’s a great.........conversationalist. But a month ago she was Borg. You don’t know who she is. It’s great that your making her comfortable, but just be careful.” “Thanks for the advice.” Harry says as he leaves. When he is gone Tom says,” I just hope you take it.” * * * The Doctor teaches the isomorph how to operate the helm and the environmental controls. “Fifty - nine point two,” the isomorph says. “What?” “That’s how much energy went into life support.” “They do require a lot of maintenance don’t they?” the Doctor says. “I want to be more like you. You taught me that I don’t have to be a slave to these biological creatures.” the isomorph says. * * * On the lower deck Torres looks around. * * * The isomorph says that he is not going to give the ship back to the organics. “that’s a little extreme don’t you think?” the Doctor tells the isomorph. “Leave Voyager. Join me and together we’ll explore the galaxy!” * * * When Torres accesses the holo - controls the lights come on. When she turns around she gasps. She sees a dead person in a storage container. * * * “You told me to be more self sufficient!” the isomorph says. “Yes, but we’re holograms. We have limitations.” “No! No!” Then the isomorph hears the alarm that starts blazing. “Someone is getting into my matrix. I’ll be back.” The isomorph disappears. * * * Torres hears something and turns around. She sees the isomorph. “You!” the isomorph screams. He throws Torres into the wall. Then he puts his hand inside Torres’s chest and reaches for her heart. Torres gasps and yells. Torres tries desperately to reach the isomorph’s controls. She manages to hit one of the buttons and the isomorph disappears. Torres collapses to the ground as the Doctor rushes in. * * * In his personal log, Harry says that Tom was right and he can’t stop thinking about Seven. * * * In the Mess Hall the lights are dimmed. Seven walks in and sees Harry sitting at one of the tables. Harry tells Seven that he had some midnight inspiration. He hands Seven a padd and tells her that it is tricky stuff. “It could use your touch. Your way of doing things. Your perspective.” he explains to Seven. He tells her to sit down. Seven says that she prefers to stand. “It would be more comfortable.” “Comfort is irrelevant. This light is insufficient.” “I think that its soothing. I’ll tell you what. After we’re done here I’ll take you to the holodeck. I’ll run the moonlight simulation. It’s beautiful.” “Beauty is irrelevant...........Unless you wish to change the nature of our affiliation. I’ve noticed your attempts to make idle conversation with me, and the way your pupils dialate when you look at my body. I believe you wish to take me to the holodeck to create a romantic mood. Are you in love with me, Ensign?” “Well.........no.” “Then you wish to copulate?” “No!” “All of these elaborate rituals of deception. I didn’t realize that becoming Human again would be so challenging. As a Borg there was no need for seduction. We saw a species we wanted and we assimilated it. Nevertheless. I’m willing to explore my humanity. Take off your clothes.” Harry starts to back away, alarmed. “Don’t be alarmed. I won’t hurt you.” “Seven..............don’t you think...........I mean this is all a little sudden..........I was just trying to..............you know............ part of the team. Maybe we should call it quits for now.” “All right,” Seven replies. “Contact me when you wish to resume our work.” * * * The Doctor puts a hypospray to B’Elanna’s neck. She wakes up and starts to cough. She asks the Doctor what happened to the isomorph. “Apparently you deactivated him. You took the holoemitters off line just in time. I found six bodies on this deck, all of them murdered. You almost became number seven.” Torres starts to moan. “Ohhh, what did he do to me?” “He reached inside tour chest and grabbed your heart. He damaged your fourth ventricle. Your diagnosis is less than stellar, unless we can get you back to Voyager. We can;t get to the shuttle. He must have disengaged the comm system.” Torres, with the help of the Doctor, walks up to the top deck. Torres tells the Doctor to hand her the medical kit. When the Doctor walks over to the console he sees the isomorphs’s holographic fish. “B’Elanna are you sure you took all the emitters off line?” “Yeah, why do you ask?” “I think you better double check.” Then the Doctor hears the sound of B’Elanna falling to the floor. He turns around and sees B’Elanna unconscious with the isomorph standing over her. “I thought you were my friend!” “We needed to repair your program. It was malfunctioning. You’re unstable.” “No! No! No! You’re unstable! You’re a hologram who thinks like an organic!” The isomorphs swings a hammer at the Doctor. It passes right through him. The Doctor does the same thing to the isomorph. “This could get tedious.” the Doctor says dryly. Then the isomorph swings the hammer at the Doctor's holoemitter. The Doctor shimmers and disappears. The isomorph picks up the emitter. “Freedom,” he says. He sees Torres stirring. She then struggles to get up. “Oh, your getting blood everywhere. I’m afraid I’m going to have to deactivate you.” Torres gasps and yells as she struggles to run away from the isomorph. The isomorph swings a hammer and B’Elanna dodges it. She runs behind a door and closes it just as the isomorph gets near. B’Elanna starts to relax and the hologram appears again. B’Elanna starts to pant and gasp as she pulls herself away from the isomorph. She then sees the tube that the isomorph almost stepped on earlier. She activates it and sticks it into the isomorph. The isomorph screams, shimmers, and disappears. * * * Torres fixes the holoemitter and the Doctor is activated. “The isomorph?” he asks. “Deactivated,” Torres replies. Torres tells the Doctor that she is ready to get off the ship. * * * Chakotay is at his desk in his quarters. He hears the door chime. “Come in,” he says. Ensign Kim walks in. He tells Chakotay that Seven and he have completed the schematics for the Astrometrics Lab. He hands him the padd. “You and Seven must have been putting in extra hours on this. It looks like we’re ready to begin construction. I’ll assign you an engineering team.” Kim says that he would rather supervise because he doesn’t want to misuse ship’s personnel. “Oh, I can rearrange the duty roster.” Chakotay tells him. “Is there a problem Ensign?” Kim says no. “Let’s hear it.” “I had a little............misunderstanding with Seven.” “Really? What was it?” “Nothing really. Just your everyday Borg, Human cultural differences.” “Really that’s not what she said.” “You........you......spoked............you spoke to her?” “She says that you are making progress. She says that you have taught her more about our complex social interactions. Any idea what that means?” “I can’t imagine.” Chakotay tells Kim that he is going to continue working with Seven now and in the future. “Sir.......aye sir.” Kim says reluctantly. Chakotay tells Kim to have fun. After he has left Chakotay starts to laugh. * * * The Doctor says that he has healed B’Elanna. “Your paracardium is as clean as a whistle, which is more than I can say about my sickbay.” Tom says that it was a hectic day. “I treated two broken bones, one upset stomach, and a lacerated hand.” “Does that mean you’re to tired to meet me in my quarters tonight?” asks B’Elanna. “Are you sure your heart can take it?” “I’m reading elevated hormonal levels. If you don’t take it easy I’ll have to declare a medical emergency.” Tom tells B’Elanna that he has to talk to Harry because he is having a nervous breakdown.”It’s a long story.” He tells a confused B’Elanna. “Not so fast, Mr. Paris. You are going to sterilize every square centimeter of this sickbay. No doubt you’ve left your oily residue on every console. Just kidding. In fact sickbay should have a more organic touch, don’t you think. It will make patients feel more at home.” The Doctor throws a hypospray on the floor as a confused Tom watches. “What’s gotten in to him?” “It’s a long story.” B’Elanna tells him. In his office the Doctor puts his feet onto a console and leans back in his chair.

My Thoughts
This episode turned out better than I expected. I liked the scene at the beginning where Tom and Harry were talking about how they tricked Tuvok. There was some character development for the Doctor and Harry, but that was all. Tom had some funny lines when he was talking to Harry about Seven. I liked the Seven and Harry scenes too. There is not much to says about this episode except that it was pretty good.
