Synopsis


Voyager is being towed at warp speed by a Borg tractor beam. On Voyager's bridge Chakotay tells B'Elanna to get a transporter lock on the Captain. Then the Borg cube hails Voyager. Janeway's face appears on the screen. She tells Chakotay that she has reached an agreement with the Borg. Voyager will supply the Borg with the modified nanoprobes in exchange for safe passage through Borg space. Chakotay tells Janeway that they don't need a leash and that the Borg should drop the tractor beam. Janeway tells Chakotay that she will see what she can do. Much to Chakotay's objection Janeway is going to stay and work on the cube. Then Janeway tells Tuvok to beam aboard the Borg vessel. "We're going to make this work Commander. Janeway out." Stars replace the image of Captain Janeway as she disappears from the screen. * * * Chakotay is in sickbay looking at magnified nanoprobes. The Doctor says that he has replicated about ten million so far. Then the Doctor gives Kim a dose of the nanoprobes. His face immediately begins to look more human. Then his eyes open. "Nice to see you again Ensign," the Doctor says. Then Doctor tells Kes to get more nanoprobes. He then tells Chakotay that he has his doubts about the Borg alliance. Chakotay tells that Captain Janeway will work things out. The Doctor tells Chakotay that he will deactivate himself at the first sign of trouble. "Well....maybe not the first sign." the Doctor adds. Chakotay sighs and leaves sickbay. * * * On the bridge B'Elanna tells Chakotay that the Borg are scrambling her transporter lock. Then the tractor beam is turned off and Voyager matches speed and course with the Borg vessel. Paris tells Chakotay that he can't believe that the Borg are actually cooperating. Kes is in sickbay. She hears a sound. She looks around but sees nothing. When she looks into a the computer console she sees the reflection of a Species 8472 alien. When she turns the other way another Species 8472 alien rushes at her. She screams and falls to the floor. "Kes! Kes! What's wrong?" the Doctor asks, sounding worried. "They're watching us!" Kes screams. The Doctor looks around sickbay nervously. * * * Some Borg drones escort Tuvok and Janeway into the center of the cube. Then Janeway tells the Borg all that Voyager has learned about the bioships. Then the Borg try to put neurotransmitters on Janeway and Tuvok. Janeway tells them that if they don't take the transmitters off then the deal is off. She tells the Borg to choose a representative. The Borg remove the transmitters. A door slowly opens near Janeway and Tuvok. They turn and see a Borg. The Borg wakes up. It steps forward and says, "I speak for the Borg." * * * Janeway introduces herself. Then the Borg tells Janeway and Tuvok that she is Seven of Nine, terciary adjunct of unamatrix 01. Seven of Nine tells them that the Borg concur the idea of a large scale weapon. "I though you might." Janeway replies. Tuvok tells Seven of Nine that they should encase the modified nanoprobes in one of Voyager's photon torpedoes. Seven of Nine tells Tuvok that Voyager's torpedoes are inadequate. "Do you have a better idea?" asks Tuvok. "we are Borg." Seven replies. "I take that as a yes." says Tuvok. Seven of Nine suggests that they use a mine that will disperse the nanoprobes over ten light years. "It sounds like you're suggesting a weapon of mass destruction" Janeway says. "We are," Seven replies. "Well I'm not Janeway says defiantly. Seven of Nine tells them that they are individuals and that they are small and think in small terms. "However....our current situation dictates that we use your torpedoes." Seven tells Janeway. She looks at a computer screen. She says that Voyager has a compliment of thirty - two photon torpedoes. "How did you obtain this information?" Tuvok asks curiously. "We are Borg." Seven tells him. "Naturally," Tuvok replies. * * * On Voyager the Doctor tells Chakotay about Kes's visions. At that moment Kes has another vision. In this one she sees her reflection in the eye of a Species 8472 alien. The Doctor tells Chakotay that there is more going on than just a simple hello. * * * While Seven of Nine is accessing information on the bioships, Chakotay contacts the cube. He tells the Captain about Kes's visions. He tells her that the Doctor thinks that Species 8472 is accessing Kes's memory. He also tells Janeway that Species 8472 might know their location and that they better change course. Seven of Nine stands still for a second and tells Janeway that their course has been altered. After Janeway is done with Chakotay Seven of Nine says that they are ready to construct a prototype. Janeway tells her that they are not ready. "If we transported 500 drones onto your vessel, do you think you could provide sufficient resistance?" Seven asks Janeway. "No, but we would die trying." Janeway says. "That will not be necessary." Seven tells them. * * * Harry returns to the bridge. He returns to his station. B'Elanna tells him that he still has a tendril up his nose. Harry starts feeling his face nervously. A of a sudden Paris announces that a singularity is opening. A bioship comes out of it. The bioship fires at Voyager. Voyager is severely damaged. The shields and weapons are off line. Just as the bioship is about to destroy Voyager, the cube rams into the bioship. The cube and the bioship are destroyed. Chakotay starts to ask for life signs. Then Tuvok contacts him from the cargo bay. Tuvok tells him that Janeway, a number of Borg, and himself beamed over before the explosion. Then Tuvok's voice stops. Chakotay, a couple of security officers, and a science officer head to the cargo bay. Chakotay leaves Paris in charge of the ship. When they enter the science officer checks Captain Janeway. They then see a Borg approach them. "Lower your weapons. It was necessary to sacrifice out vessel to save yours. We have an alliance. Do we not." Chakotay doesn't answer Seven of Nine. * * * The Borg have assimilated a cargo bay. Chakotay tells Tuvok to seal off decks 9 - 13 from the rest of the ship. Tuvok tells Chakotay that they are ready to construct the prototype. Tuvok walks over to Kes and asks her how she is feeling. She tells him that she is fine and the visions have stopped for now. The Doctor tells Chakotay that the Captain has severe neural damage and that it will take some creative thinking to save the captain. He also tells Chakotay that the Captain wishes to speak to him, but he needs to keep it brief. Chakotay walks over to the Captain. She starts to speak. "The Doctor explained my condition. You are now in command." "I understand." Chakotay replies. Janeway continues to talk. "They'll push you, threaten you, but they need you. They need this alliance. You have to make this work. I want you to make this work. Get this crew home." She stops talking and the Doctor tells Chakotay that he has to begin surgery. * * * Chakotay talks to Seven of Nine. "The captain is recovering in our medical bay. You'll be dealing with me now." "the circumstances have changed." Seven of Nine says. "I'll say so." Chakotay replies. Chakotay continues to talk. " You'll stay on board. We'll give you the modified nanoprobes once we are out of Borg space." :Our calculations tell us that the war will be lost by then." Seven tells Chakotay. "Turning this ship around is dangerous." Chakotay replies. "Denying our request is also dangerous." Seven says threatening Chakotay. * * * Chakotay and the senior officers are in the conference room. He tells everyone that with the nanoprobes and the Borg on the ship that they are prime targets. He plans to drop the Borg off on the nearest uninhabited planet and to give them the nanoprobes. Tuvok informs the Commander that the Borg will not go quietly. * * * Chakotay tells Seven of Nine that he plans to drop the Borg off on an uninhabited planet and then give them the nanoprobes. "Unacceptable. We could assimilate your entire vessel right now." Seven tells him. "If even one Borg steps just a millimeter out of that cargo bay I'll decompress the entire deck. You won't pose much of a threat floating in space." Chakotay tells Seven. Seven of Nine tells Chakotay that his crew lacks harmony,cohesion, and greatness. "Every individual entitled to their own opinion. It will be your undoing." Seven tells him. * * * Chakotay enters sickbay and starts talking to the unconscious captain. "Well, I've made my decision. If it were only a matter of going against the orders of my superior officer, but you're more than just my captain. Your my friend. I hope you understand." * * * In an unknown sector of space singularities open. Dozens of bioships fly out. A fleet of Borg cubes try to stop them ,but they fail and the cubes are destroyed. * * * The Collective tells Seven of Nine must take over the Alpha Quadrant vessel. The Collective also tells her that 8 planets were destroyed, 312 cubes disabled, and there were 4,000,621 drones lost. * * * On the bridge Kim reads that there are power fluctuations in the deflector array. Then he reports that the array is sending out a resinate graviton beam. A singularity starts to open. Chakotay tells the Borg to stop what they are doing or he will decompress the cargo bay. After warning them a second time he decompresses the cargo bay. We see all of the Borg being sucked into space. Seven of Nine manages to hold on to some railing. After the decompression is complete Kim reports that he still doesn't have control. Tuvok tells Chakotay that one Borg remains. Voyager is pulled into the singularity. Kim reports that they are in an interdimentional rift. He says that there are no stars or planets. B'Elanna reports that sensors indicate that the space is filled with organic fluid. "It's not space. It's matter." she tells Chakotay. Just then Seven of Nine contacts the bridge and tells Chakotay to meet her in the cargo bay. She tells him that Voyager has entered the domain of Species 8472. She also tells Chakotay that their entrance into fluidic space has caused a compression wave. Species 8472 knows that Voyager is in their space and the bioships will arrive in three hours. "How could you know about fluidic space?" Chakotay asks. Then he figures it out. "You started this war, didn't you? What's the matter. Our galaxy to small for you? You came here to assimilate them. But this species fought back" "Species 8472 was more resistant than anticipated. Species 8472 would have greatly added to our own perfection." Seven tells Chakotay. She tells Chakotay that they must start modifying the weapons. * * * The Doctor calls Chakotay. He enters sickbay to see Captain Janeway walking around. " I have repaired neural damage for Ensign Kim and Captain Janeway. I'm two for two." the Doctor says smiling. He notices that Chakotay and Janeway are both glaring at him. He then deactivates himself. Janeway asks Chakotay why he disobeyed her orders. "You never trusted me." Janeway says. "Trust had nothing to do with it." Chakotay replies. Chakotay then tells Janeway that the Borg started the war with Species 8472. Chakotay tells her that they should fix the array and get back to their own space. "No. I won't be caught tinkering with the array when those alien get here." Janeway tells Chakotay. Janeway continues to speak. "We fight the alien in full cooperation with the Borg.". Janeway says that they need to stop fighting. * * * Janeway walks onto the bridge. She tells Seven of Nine that Chakotay has been relieved of duty and locked in the brig. She tells everyone that they need to get the nanoprobes and start building the weapons. She says that they are going to engage the enemy and show them what they are up against. The weapons need to be armed in two hours. "We're going to war." Janeway says. * * * The Borg modifications are complete. They are brought online. Outside the ship we can see green lights being turned on near the Borg modifications. "All hands, ready stations and prepare to engage the enemy." Janeway tells the crew. Then four bioships come into sensor range. Kes starts to communicate telepathically with them. "They say we have contaminated their realm." Kes says. "Tell them that we had no choice." Janeway says. "They says that our galaxy is impure. It is a threat to their genetic integrity." Kes continues. Janeway tells Kes to tell Species 8472 that Voyager is armed with a deadly weapon that can destroy them. "They says that our galaxy will be purged." Kes says. Then a bioship fires at Voyager. The shields and weapons go off line and Voyager is severely damaged. Janeway tells Tuvok to use the backup weapons systems. "Fire!" she says. All four bioships are hit with the torpedo. Nothing happens. Just as the bioships are about to fire again they lose control and explode. Voyager returns to the Delta Quadrant through the singularity. When they come out more than a dozen bioships follow them. "Kes, tell them that we will use the weapon again." Kes tells them,but they do not respond. Voyager fires the type ten warhead from it's aft torpedo bay. Thirteen bioships are destroyed. The rest retreat back into their realm. The Collective tells Seven that every bioship in the quadrant is retreating. Janeway tells Seven that the agreement was that Voyager get safe passage through Borg space. Seven says that the alliance is terminated. She walks toward the helm. Tom fires a phase at Seven of Nine,but her Borg shields protect her. Seven of Nine then shoves Tom to the floor. She starts to get into ship controls. Then Janeway taps her commbadge. "Janeway to Chakotay. Scorpion." * * * In the cargo bay Chakotay is standing in front of a Borg station. He contacts Seven of Nine through the Collective. He tells Seven of Nine that she is human not Borg. "Annika!" he says. We see flashbacks of Seven before she was assimilated. Then the Doctor and B'Elanna overload the Borg implants. On the bridge an electric shock makes Seven collapse. Chakotay collapses on the bridge. Seven of Nine's link to the Collective is severed. * * * Janeway is in the holodeck writing her log on paper in DaVinchi's workshop. Chakotay enters and asks what they are going to do with Seven. Janeway says that they pulled the plug and that they are responsible for her. * * * In sickbay Seven of Nine lays unconscious on a biobed.


My Thoughts


"Scorpion" is one of those episodes that gradually gets better over time. I find that the more I watch it, the more I like it. Although I enjoyed Part 1 just a little bit more than Part 2, it's still equal to "The Best of Both Worlds" in my book. The special effects were quite impressive, more so than in last year's premiere. Although I lik Basics Part 2 as well.) Perhaps the best scenes were with Species 8472. I really enjoyed them and they are turning out to be one of the most intriguing alien species ever introduced on Trek. (They are certainly one of the most interesting species.) The effects in the battle scene between the bio ships and the cubes were very nice. Now I'll announce my favorite scene. It occurs at the end of the episode when Seven of Nine attempts to take over Voyager. I absolutely loved the line, "Janeway to Chakotay. Scorpion."
