Synopsis
Tom and Harry have repaired the Fair Haven holodeck program, and they're running it twenty - four hours a day. However, the program can't handle the constant use, and it begins to malfunction. The holograms begin to notice that Tom, Harry, and the others can manipulate their environment at will. They believe that spirit folk are attempting to destroy Fair Haven.
Everyone in town is talking about the spirit folk, and Janeway and the others find themselves being questioned by the holograms. When Tom and Harry enter the holodeck to fix the controls and make the characters oblivious to changes in their environment, the holograms capture them and drag them to the church. Then they tie them up and attempt to send them back to the spirit world. They also capture The Doctor. With the holodeck safeties off and the Doctor integrated into the holodeck, the town's people hold the three Voyager crewmembers hostage and hypnotize the Doctor.
While hypnotized, the Doctor tells the Fair Haven holograms everything about Voyager. He doesn't tell them that they're holograms, however. Using the Doc's holo - emitter, Michael Sullivan manages to get aboard Voyager. Janeway then tells him that she and her crew are on a starship in the future, and that they are using a sort of time travel to visit Fair Haven. With everything in Fair Haven back to normal, the crew continues to visit the town. All in all, it's a happy ending.
My Thoughts
"Spirit Folk" didn't perform too well in the Nielson Ratings. However, I enjoyed the entire show, and I'm looking forward to seeing Fair Haven again in the future. (I can only hope that I'll enjoy next week's episode as much as I enjoyed this week's. The preview for "Ashes to Ashes" brought back some disturbing memories of last year's horrible "Disease".) Jay Chattaway's delightful musical score and the wonderful sets added to the authenticity of "Spirit Folk". The guest stars turned in some nice performances, as did most of the regular cast. B'Elanna, however, didn't act like her usual self. I don't understand why she hated Fair Haven so much. She's never even visited it. Seven didn't have very many lines this time around, but that didn't bother me. This particular story worked without her. Anyway, I'm glad that the town's folk never discovered that they're really holograms, and I absolutely loved The Doctor's portrayal as Father Mulligan. I especially liked the scene where he bursts through the church doors and shouts, "Sinners! Sinners, all of you." Voyager seems to do more holodeck stories than all of the other Trek series. Some people may not like that, but I do. I always look forward to holodeck episodes, and I hope we're treated to a few more before the series ends. My Rating : 10.00 out of 10.00 -- NEXT WEEK : A former crewmember whom Harry once loved is brought back to life. This does not look good. I hope I'm wrong.
