Hatching Day

The Hatching starts, Up speed the hearts,
A day of impending fluster!
A rush to show, a thrown-on robe,
And all the courage you can muster!

Your sandaled feet absorb the heat,
as you shift from sole to sole;
You ask your neighbor, your legs in labor,
"Why sandals? And not something cold?"

Will you be picked? Will you be skipped?
It's up to the dragon's whim;
Will she be next? Will he be left?
But think of yourself, not them.

Is this the one? your lifelong chum,
To forever love and preen? (do you dare hope for the Queen?)
Or is that your mate, to choose your fate,
the Blue, Brown, Bronze, or Green?

You hear a voice penetrate the noise,
a new-found ray of light;
You turn to see, heart filled with glee,
a Dragon, to your delight!

Now you are whole, another soul,
a Dragon, your other self.
The world, it sings, with your Dragon's wings
wide to the world itself!

Who knows who will part,
a completed heart,
and who will stumble away?
A trying time,
and yet sublime,
is that of Impression day.
