Vanetin from Crystal Singer!
This M** is different, not Pern-based, but set in another of Anne McCaffrey's timeless stories, the first one called:
Crystal Singer!!  Imagine that!
Vanetin(#2351Pce)
A fairly short female stands before you, and aside from her height, looking like she is in her early 20's. One look at her tells you she is not one to fool around with. She carries herself with an air of unconscious composure, a daring stance. As her friends will attest, though, once one meets her, she is not nearly as forbidding. Her friends are under loyal protection, but her enemies dare not mess with her. Her fingers are very agile and coordinated, showing much use in instrumentation. Her voice is soft and controlled. Her face is not very noticeable; She has a dark complexion, either a tan or her skin color, you can't be sure which. She has dark brown hair streaming half-way down her back, held tightly back in a braid by a long blue ribbon which continues down her back a few more inches, a few wisps of hair escaping nevertheless to frame her face.. Her piercing brown eyes hide everything and nothing, showing her mood only when she allows them. She wears a simple suit consisting of slightly baggy pants and a large Tie-dyed t-shirt, adequately hiding any figure that she might posess, but not hindering her movements, in case she must move quickly. Around her waste is a tie-dyed belt, from which hangs a medium-sized Baubling pouch.

Vanetin's History:

Vanetin grew up on Fuerte. Her parents were very much into music and horses; She lived on a breeding ranch. Her parents taught her how to play the piano, she had Violin, Cello, String Bass, and voice lessons, and she plays the recorder by ear. She was majoring in music, in her sophomore year in college, when her father died. She couldn't bear to go back and leave her mother, brother, and sister, so she stayed with them, intending to go back to college the next year. The one day she met a peculiar man by the name of Mankin, and he seemed to like her. She started to spend lots of time with him, and was happy for the first time since her father's death. Then Mankin started going into seizures at night, and he said he had to go back to Ballybran; when Vanetin asked him why, he wouldn't give her a straight answer, saying something about 'Crystal'? He bought two tickets to Shankill, saying one was for her, if she wanted it. She talked to her mother, and she resignedly said that Vanetin was old enough to make her own decisions. Neither of them knew what was at Shankill. So, Vanetin took the ticket, and she and Mankin both went to Shankill, but halfway there, he went into convulsions, and some men took him away, and left her in the rather large room they had gotten on the shuttle. She heard someone say he was a 'Crystal Singer,' but she really didn't understand the signifigance of that.

Held by Vanetin:

Baubling Pouch
This is a medium-sized pouch filled with many little objects that make varied indentations on the outside. With the contents, one plays a game called Baubling, which, if you ask the owner, she will tell you about.

"Basically, Baubling is this fun game, where you take something from a pile.."  Vanetin reaches into her pouch and unearths a small chip of ceramic.  "Ahh, yes, you take something and create a history for it.  For instance, this ordinary-looking little piece of ceramic is /actually/ part of one of the dishes that the great Queen of  Hyperion, who was the first queens to ever use... a towel!
