Chapter 2
"Attention on deck", the eight man special reconnaisance team snapped to attention as one being.
"At ease", the stocky grey figure dressed in an XCOM work jumpsuit said as he walked towards the lectern near the
center of COMBASE:NOVA's briefing room B. "Please, be seated ladies and gentlemen", the voice was old but strong and it cut through the cool silence in the high security briefing chamber, "I'm sorry I was late, Admiral Simms had some business to discuss with me." The old soldier smiled at the reactions he got from the taut and competent looking men and women who made up the recondo team. "Gawd, I hate that", he thought, "young pups are so bloody well in awe, it's impossible to relate a bad joke."
One of the tough looking women to the old man's right stood up, "Sergeant Major, we had no idea..."
"You can shut that off right bloody well now" the young Lieutenant actually paled as he spoke, "I'm not goddamn George Washington for chrissakes!!!"Command Sergeant Major Allen Wisloski let the annoyed edge in his voice buzzsaw into the assembled troops, "Just because I was Platoon Sergeant for Rubicon Crossing doesn't make me the fricking Pope!!" Wisloski knew he was lying to himself even as he said the words. Wisloski was one of their hero's and what was more he knew it, a member of the XCOM Platoon that single-handidly ended the first alien war. Rubicon Crossing had very nearly been a disaster and it was the stuff of legend's to the young soldiers who themselves were the best of the best. Three fourth's of these special men and women had been involved in Operation: Deep Storm, the final raid on the
alien city of T'leth that ended the Second Alien War so they knew exactly what Wisloski had gone through. Except that they didn't, making the jump for Mars with bare minimum backup and
equipment, the final approach to the red planet, forging in towards the landing at Cydonia, the fire and heat of battle spilling human blood on the dusty red soil that the same human
soldiers had just touched for the first time. Casualties had been high and Wisloski himself had been severely wounded before the controlling alien brain was destroyed and the alien base
immolated itself nearly taking the surviving XCOM warriors with it.
