Gambit: Hero or Traitor?

Hero=3 Traitor=1 Other=2

The Basic Concept:

Gambit: Newsarama has also learned that a long-rumored and oft-mentioned X-project is closer to becoming a reality. Penciler STEVE SKROCE tells the CBI-N that following work on an upcoming issue of Uncanny, and a cover for the adjectiveless title, he is tentatively scheduled to begin work on a GAMBIT ONGOING series. No writer is attached to the project at the moment, but Skroce expects Marvel to set a December or early 1999 launch for the title. And although Marvel editorial has not confirmed the series (though the current issue of the MARVEL retailer catalog/fan magazine tells readers to "look out for a new Gambit series in the near future") we speculate that Gambit is THE "new X-Men" series mentioned in Marvel trade ads early this year (Newsarama June 12).

The Rants and Raves:

Gambit's got his own series! Good? Bad? What do you think of the character and his place with the X-Men? Hero or Villian?

If Remy is considered a villain because of what he has done in the past (Re: Mutant Massacre), and so beyond forgivness no matter what the good he has done since, including going to the point of more or less committing suicide on team business to get the job done, then everyone else on the team can be considered a villain also, because NOT ONE of them is lily-white clean. After all, Logan has killed many times, even though he can't remember some of them Rogue was once a member of the Brotherhood of Evil Mutants, and destroyed Ms. Marvel's life by taking her mind and power away Storm got rid of Marrow, or at least thought she did, and so on and so on. Even the Professor has done a few things that could be considered "unforgiveable." So please, before the team throws Remy out for what he has done and has tried to make up for, they should take a real hard look at themselves, and then decide if THEY are as "good" as they THINK they are.   -Istariel
Hero or villain, black or white, angel or demon - why can there never be shades of grey? Not everyone always walks in rays of sunshine - life is like that. We have all done things that we are ashamed of, things we regret, Gambit is no different to any other member of the X-Men. Can he be forgiven for his sins - maybe not. Should he be - yes. Who are we to judge. So is Gambit hero or villain? Perhaps he is neither, but he has sought to repent for past sins, and those who fail to forgive are by far worse than him.  -The Hunter
Looks like I'm playing devil's advocate, but to get things controversial, I think Gambit is a villian. Although I recognize the good he has done as an X-Man, especially his key role in saving Storm from the Shadow King's control, Gambit remains a villian based on his refusal to reveal his past to the X-Men. The Mutant Masacre is an unforgivable crime, but assuming he really didn't know what was happening, he might be able to be absolved of the guilt (though how anyone collecting murderers can't know what's what is beyond me!). However, since he kept it from everyone, even though it was driving one of his teammates insane, clearly demonstrates he wasn't willing to go the whole way to make up for his sins. Yeah, I know he cried his eyes out enough, but I'm willing to bet it was more over the fact that he knew his past would catch up to him, than any real pain he felt from taking part in the Masacre. In my book, Gambit is a villian!   -Silver
I think Gambit is a hero. True, he has done some bad things and has a, let's just say, shady past, but look at all the things he has done since joining the X-Men. All the good deeds he has performed, deeds he may never had even considered if he had not follwed this path. I think that's why he became an X-Men. To make up for past mistakes. And that is a hero. Someone who acknowledges what they have done, and in their own way, have tried to make things right. And Gambit has. That is what makes him a hero.   -Catana
I think Gambit is a hero. He did fight side by side the X-Men AGAINST Mr. Sinister. Even though he caused the death of hundredes of innocent Morlocs- He felt sorry after that, and regrets. He hated Mr. Sinister for what he made him do. But, if he wasn't an X-Man, EVERYBODY would have considered him a villian - and all the mutants were hunting him down - that does make you think...  -The Iceman
I think Gambit is a true hero. A true hero is not the person who never erredd, and has always been on the right side, but the person who has made mistakes and done his or her best to overcome their shortcomings and be a better person. Gambit has been trying to make ammends for years. He realizes his mistake and tries to become a better person. That makes him a true hero to me.  -~ShockWave~
