The Way Things Should Have Been
Cassie looked up as Jake poked his head into the barn. "I’ve got something to show you."
"What?"
Jake’s eyes danced mischeviously. "You’ll see."
He came over and without warning picked her up.
Cassie let out a yelp of surprise and threw her arms around Jake’s neck, hanging on for dear life.
Jake laughed and deposited her safely in the front seat of his truck.
They drove to the beach.
"Close your eyes." Jake said as he parked the car.
Cassie obeyed. "Alright, they’re closed."
Jake scooped Cassie up in his arms and carried her down the coast. She laughed, the wind whipping through her hair, but kept her eyes closed.
When Jake finally set her down, they were at the cliff of a sand dune.
"You can open them now." Jake whispered.
Cassie’s eyes fluttered open. She was met with a spectacular view.
The sun was just beginning to set. Rays of pink light reflected of the dancing waves. The tide licked at the sand. Cassie smiled.
Jake encircled his arms around her from behind. "Happy Birthday, Cassie."
Tears came to her eyes. "I love you, Jake."
He kissed her softly on the cheek. "I will love you forever."
Cassie closed her eyes and leaned against Jake’s chest. She wanted to savor this moment. The rise and fall of his chest with each breath. The sound of his heart in her ear. The warm silky sand beneath her. The soft splash of the waves hitting shore. The warm rays of the sun shining on her skin. The call of the gulls flying over the water. Cassie sighed with contentment. She felt so warm and safe.
"Cassie."
Cassie came out of the memory and back into the real world.
"I’m coming." She whispered to the soldier behind her.
Her eyes blurred with tears as she looked over the war-devestated planet.
"Goodbye, Jake." She whispered.
Cassie turned and climbed into the waiting ship.
Uh...yeah. I know that was confusing. Cassie was remembering a memory after the war was over. Jake died. There's no backstory, sorry. There's no more story to tell. I don't know what happened. The scene just popped into my head.
