Profile: Dr. Marianne Ellis is every bit the modern careerwoman. Interesting because she makes a career of studying the past! From birth she was intrigued with ancient Egyptian history, born in the shadow of the Pyramids. They always held a mystical fascination for her. Being a scientist, she dismisses ancient theories of magic, explaining it as the Egyptian's protoscience. She is a bit arrogant in her assumption that the rest of the world should think as she. For she had to be aggressive to succeed in a male dominated profession. Having a brother who was an Egyptologist didn't exactly help or hurt her success. Often they have worked on the same digs, and in the same museums as a team. They are quite inseparable. Unlike her, he believes that magic and the occult are very real and very dangerous when misunderstood. Sort of like Mulder to her Scully.
Educated at Cambridge, she is an excellent chemist and scholar. Her grasp of Egyptian history is phenomenal, having absorbed most of it from her family. She is jaded when it comes to popular misconceptions regarding ancient Egypt. Any theories that suggest Egypt required outside help to build the Pyramids or other monuments she dismisses as preposterous poppycock. Possesses pleasant singing voice from years of training in a girl's choir growing up in England. Enjoys singing in a church choir if she has the time.
She met the Mummies by accident when Princess Sohkarra tried to warn her about a possible attack by Scarab. The mummy she was radiodating happened to be related to one of Scarab's servants. Scarab was convinced this scientist could help him extract his own DNA, and thus clone it. Evidently she thought he'd been watching way too much science fiction.
Burned badly in an effort to save her brother, she was rescued by Rath, the scribe. Instantly there was an attraction betwixt them. The challenge of having a relationship with a 3500-year-old Egyptian mummy may seem daunting. But their arrogance and their love of knowledge make them an excellent match. For all her bluster and knowledge she can be a sensitive and caring woman. As Rath can be so, if situations call for it.
UPDATES:
In an upcoming fanfiction, Marianne will discover that she herself is capable of summoning mystical armor. But the patron deities are not that of ancient Egypt. For her belief in her own religion and science is vying with her belief in ancient Egyptian magic for her spiritual loyalties. She eventually discovers a strange shield pin in a nearby church where she has gone to pray for her friends in one of their times of great need. Marked with the devices of St. George of England, and St. Andrew of Scotland, it intrigues her and surprises her. Oddly as she tries to return it, the object is returned to her possession of its own accord. She begins to see it is no mere coincidence, and retains the charm.
When in battle she is face to face with Araq, overlooked because of her lack of mystical powers, and asked to defend Presley as a last resort defense. Marianne senses time stopping, and is faced with an onrush of incredible mystical abilities. Which manifest themselves in magical armor. After stopping Araq from murdering Presley, she manages to help turn the tide with her friends. However, she is not quite certain how the armor was summoned, until Rath makes an investigation into the new power signature surrounding her.
Faced with this dilemma, she fears perhaps there will come a time where she must decide between her loyalty to Amenhotep's house, and the exploration of her own heritage and place in the world. Rath's evaluation is this: He opened the way for her to learn magic when he introduced her to that of Msir, but now the way is open, her own religion seems to be taking its own mystical precedence. The consequences of this are answered in upcoming fanfictions.
Abilities: She possesses an ancient Egyptian bracelet that hides her from Scarab's magic. Rath has taught her some basic magical defense spells. Yet he claims her belief in modern science limits what he can teach her. In turn, she teaches him much about modern science. The bracelet enables her to transmute base metals into other elements. At its time the bracelet was the work of an alchemist, to manipulate the four elements on a small scale. In the hands of a modern chemist with 92 elements, the possibilities are rather vaster. Still she is learning how to use the power for her own protection, as well as the protection of her brother. Discipline from music training gives her an edge when it comes to resisting psychic attacks. This and her strong religious beliefs enable her to resist hypnosis from enemies such as Scarab. Can also resist mental probing to some degree from the training Rath has given her. Also her natural stubbornness adds to this. She was taught to fight first by Armon, and later Rath himself took up instructing her in the use of a sword, a smaller lighter version of his khephesh.
New abilities: With the calling phrase: By George and Andrew I summon thine aid! She can call upon the powers of both saints to endow her with their mystical armor of St. Andrew, and the shield of St. George. This armor is fashioned of holy steel, which contains no iron to inhibit magical power, and can withstand most magical missiles and sharp blades. The shield of St. George repels dragonfire, magical elements, and even manmade weapons such as bullets and lasers. The armor is purely defensive in nature. However, she can be most formidable as she now carries her own longsword fashioned by St. Michael, the Avenger blade. She is still learning swordplay from Rath, and is by no means an expert, yet knows enough to repel most attackers. The alloy is the same as Rath's, and has similar properties to the Egyptian bracelet. She can transmute elements through the armor to a slightly greater extent them before, magnifying her abilities. The armor is tied into her spiritual strength and faith, and her physical well being, so the healthier she is spiritually, the stronger the armor will be. It puts her on more equal footing with the Guardians of Rapses, and their enemies, and Rath is reluctantly beginning to accept that she is capable of fighting alongside of them if need be.
Weaknesses: Elemental transmutation only lasts a maximum of fifteen minutes. Any transmutation takes a good deal of concentration and mental energy, the more she uses her power the more exhausted she becomes. Unfortunately her power level is drastically reduced, away from Ancient Egypt, limiting the spells she has learned from her time in ancient Egypt. In a fight her experience with fencing makes it difficult for her to switch to Rath's sword tactics he has taught her, and she is still learning the use of a sword. Her armor's strength can be depleted if her spirits are low, and if her doubts are high, making it a liability if she should become self absorbed and depressed. Yet if she is possessed by anger, there is the danger she can loose control of her armor and its transmutation abilities to cause serious harm to her friends as well as her enemies.

Relationship to others
:JaKal: Rather reluctant to have her know of their existence. Yet he admires her hard work ethic, and she has earned his grudging respect. Now as she shows fledgling skills in swordplay, he has begun to see her fighting spirit and faith strengthens her desire to protect her friends at all costs.
Sohkarra: Thinks highly of the British chemist. Especially the fact she is so fascinated with Egyptian history, and making her way in a "man's world". The two women share a bit common ground, for Sohkarra it is nice to have a living woman to interact and share things with. Sohkarra realizes Marianne is quite a valuable ally in their quest to understand the modern world.
Rath: Madly in love with the scientist, and every bit as awkward due to his inexperience at love. They often argue, but he wouldn't have their relationship either way. Somehow he fears that she might leave him or spurn him as Chontra had. Yet relationships take time, and this is a perfect way for him to learn about modern science... from an intellectual equal! He is reluctant to let her fight alongside the Guardians in battle, and often is overprotective of her to a fault.
Nefertina: Admires Marianne's spunk, and enjoys the fact she puts Rath in his place. The two women are not as tight as Marianne and Sohkarra, but Marianne is a source of information regarding male female relationships in the modern world for Nefertina. Since Nefertina is dating Cameron, she finds Marianne's input invaluable.
Armon: Not quite sure what to make of Marianne. She is polite to him, and patient. Marianne is beginning to see that intellect is not the sum of one's skills, through her interactions with Armon. His simple approach to life leaves her wondering if she is missing something in the pursuit of knowledge.
Presley: A bit amused and scared that his mom might find out Marianne's secret connection to the Mummies. But he's glad to have a grown up from his time allied with the Guardians. Since Marianne provides some financial support as well, it makes it easier on him and Sohkarra. Those gadgets Rath builds need funding from somewhere!
Ashake: Having protected Marianne in the past, this Guardian of the Guild has developed a strange appreciation for the scientist. She herself threatened Pheres that no harm would come to the chemist. And stepped aside in the Nile story to let Rath and Marianne pursue their unique relationship. Marianne knows of her existence, and knows that Rath pines greatly for his wife, for in this reality she had disappeared under strange circumstances. She feels awe and a bit of sadness at the fact their love was quite strong. Sometimes she wonders if Ashake will encounter them in this reality, and what sacrifices Ashake must have made to be who Rath has described her to be.
Mennehotep: Marianne and Menne knew of each other's existence, but walk a fine line between friendship and annoyance. Mennehotep slightly resents Marianne for having a relationship with Rath, and feels a bit protective of the Scribe. She is jealous of Marianne's present knowledge of science, and the fact that Marianne has her alchemy bracelet! However, she has said little as it has protected the Chemist till now. Since Sohkarra is a good friend of Marianne, she tries hard to tolerate and befriend the Chemist. Marianne resents having to kowtow to Mennehotep, being more used to Sohkarra's easygoing personality. The fact that Marianne was the prepared host for Menne should her body not be resurrected to fight Kara is something the Scientist cannot forget. Despite this, the two are trying to learn from one another and develop some sort of relationship of mutual understanding.
Mira: Knows something of this artist through her friends. She can appreciate through her work with artifacts the great skills this artist possesses, but she wishes Mira would be more practical in her thought processes.
Lyris: Has not yet encountered the Muse. She has heard talk among the others, behind closed doors of a lost Guardian, but always assumed it was Sohkarra. Eventually she came to learn of the Muse's existence through talking to Nefertina and Mennehotep. She resents the fact that Lyris sacrificed herself in death to serve a dead princess, when Lyris could have served the rest of her life to hone the minds of the next Royals under Tuthmosis I. She considers that an act of suicide, contrary to her Christian upbringing. However, when she does meet the Muse, there will be interesting question that will have to be answered. She feels a bit odd about this subject with Rath and Mennehotep, wondering why Nefertina never told her about this guardian before. And wonders about the Muse's life, which she has come to know in conversations with Mennehotep and Nefertina, and wonders what the Muse will be like if they do perchance to meet face to face.
Nyx: Protective of Rath's daughter, and sometimes makes the mistake of assuming she can make decisions regarding the girl's life as freely as he can. She is only a stepmother in his eyes, as children are the property of the father in Ancient Egypt. Marianne is trying to get Rath to ease up on Nyx and let her have more freedom in the modern world. However, this leads to catastrophe down the road for Nyx and her father's relationship. Nyx respects Marianne and will listen to her, but wonders how long Rath will stay with Marianne as their relationship changes over time.
