Beat the Odds

Charles Wells felt lucky. So lucky they wrote a music hall song about him:Navigator "The Man Who Broke the Bank at Monte Carlo." He wasn't exactly your James Bond type, he was very fat. He wasn't a well known gambler and apparently didn't use any mystical system.

Those that had met him said he was a baleful man.

Wells broke the bank three times and wasn't heard from again.

Each table was allocated 100,000 francs "bank". Wells broke the bank twice in 1891. He placed even-money bets on black and red and won nearly every time. His third winfall he placed his opening bet on the number five. The odds were 35 to 1 and he won. He let the money ride on number five and won again. He repeated this five times and broke the bank.

Charles Wells left with his winnings and went down in history.
