Treve is a city rich in plunder, as lofty, inaccessable, and impregnable as
a tarn's nest. It is known as the Tarn of the
Voltai, and is an arrogant, never-conquered citadel, a stonghold of men
whose way of life is banditry, whose women live
on the spoils of a hundred cities. Chief among it's defenses are the vast
legions of tarnsmen, riding the wilding tarns found
in this land. The wilding tarns of Treve are larger and much stronger then
tarns bred in captivity, and are widely regarded
as the best fighting tarns on Gor. There are two main sources of revenue
for Treve; trained wilding war tarns and the
mercenery use of Treve's vast forces to neighboring cities. For this
reason, the city government continues to be ruled by
a Ubar, as a state of war exists almost continually. The neighboring cities
pay vast sums of gold tarn disks to buy
protection, but in reality, they pay to keep Treve from attacking them.
Ar:
The largest city of known Gor. The center of Marlenus' empire. Ar sets
fasions, standards, and is envied and hated by
other cities. Tarl Cabot described it the first time that he saw it as
having One Hundred Thousand Cylinders. It has a set
of Double walls, made of white marble, the first 300 feet high the second
20 yards from the first is 400 feet high.
Cos:
An alliance of several cities which all exist on the island of Cos. It is
known for its famous wines and its vast fleets of
trading ships, as well as its imperialistic tendencies. It is at war with
the city of Ar, and along with its ally the Ubarate of
Tyros it is currently at war with the city of Port Kar.
Ko-ro-ba:
Gorean City-State. Its name is derived from an archaic expression for a
village market. It is located west of the Voltai
range, and northwest of the Thentis Mountains. It lies in a valley in the
midst of green and rolling hills, hundreds of feet
above sea level.
Port Kar:
A port city located on the shores of the Tamber gulf, at the coastal edge
of Thassa (the sea). Its precise location is open
for conjecture, as it guards its privacy tenaciously. Surrounded on the
landward side by the vast Vosk Delta Marshes, it
is virtually inaccessible except by ship or tarnback. Known as a den of
thieves and pirates, its raiding fleets are among
the most feared upon Gor. Squalid and decadent, and often virtually
lawless.
Schendi:
A large seaport which exists on the edge of the subequatorial rainforests
and jungle regions of Gor. A free city, governed
under merchant law. The primary city of the black tribesmen of Schendi, and
home of the League of Black Slavers.Due
to its strategic position at the mouth of the southern Cartius river,it is
a major trade center for the various spices, raw
materials and trade goods of the jungle regions.
Tharna:
Ruled by a matriarchy (Tatrix), Tharna is Gor's silver city. Located among
mountains, Tharna accorded women great
opportunities and privilege until the rebellion of 10,117 Contasta Ar. Its
towers are broader and shorter than other cities.
Once drab and grey, they are now as brightly colored as are the towers of a
typical Gorean city. It is east of Ko-ro-ba.
Cabot mentioned that it is far from the Sardar.
Thentis:
A fortress city in the Mountains of Thentis. Possessed of some agriculture,
particularly the export of wool from its
goat-like mountain animals, or verr, and its export of beans used to make
"Black Wine" (coffee). Also famed for its great
Tarn flocks, which are similar to the Mountains of Thentis. Most of the
tarns on Gor are bred here. Not currently at war
with anyone, except perhaps the city of Treve. A Gorean City-State The
Mountain range is northwest of Ko-ro-ba.
Tor:
Southern Desert city. The largest and most populous of the desert
city-states of Gor. Located in the far south, to the
northeast of Turia, at the edge of the vast Tahari wasteland. It is a major
trade center and the focal point of hundreds of
desert caravan routes. It is also a cultural center for the tribesmen of
the Tahari, providing the bulk of trade goods both
to and from the desert regions.
Torvaldsland:
Not actually a city, but a scattered group of settlements in the far north.
Famous for its inhabitants, the Torvaldslanders,
who are similar in most respects to Earth Vikings of the early medieval
period. Known for its superb sailors and the
rough mannerisms of its denizens.
Treve:
A warlike city, famed for its flocks of wilding tarns (enormous hawk-like
birds that tarnsmen of Gor ride into battle on),
lying about seven hundred pasangs north of Ar, towards the Sardar. The
mountain stronghold can only be reached by
tarnback. It has no agriculture, and each year, legions of tarnsmen emerge
from the Voltai falling on the fields of one city
or another, different cities in different years, harvesting what they need
and burning the rest in order that a long, retalitory
winter campaign could not be launched against them. Because of the
protection provided by high mountains, there has
never been a serious threat to Treve's Home Stone.
Turia:
High walled...nine gated...lying in the middle of the huge prairies claimed
by the wagon people.
Tyros:
An alliance of several cities which all exist on the island of Tyros. Known
for its great fleets of raiding ships. Along with
its ally the Ubarate of Cos it is currently at war with the city of Port
Kar.
