LIEUTENANT (JUNIOR GRADE)
AUDRA MCKAY
TRANSPORTER CHIEF
USS ALLIANCE
(Susan Hill)
Audra McKay was born in 2346 on the Upper Peninsula Of Michigan in the town of Manistique. Her mother, Lorraine, owns and operates "The Manner", an Inn on the shores of Lake Michigan. Her father, Will, is a marine biologist specializing in the study of fresh water shellfish. Audra has one sister, Mona, who is married with two daughters. Mona lives on Beaver Island and aspires to be a recognized wild life painter. Audra's brother, Jared, is currently in San Francisco attending Starfleet Academy.
Audra grew up on the shores of Lake Michigan. She is an accomplished sailor and an avid wild life advocate. She spent many hours on the water with her father as he surveyed large areas of Lake Michigan.
When she was 17 years old, Audra applied for the "Intergalactic Exchange Program" and to her amazement was accepted. She spent her first year of college level study on Betazed studying Betazoid culture at the Bizamme Higher Institute of Learning. It was there that she developed a love for cultural anthropology and pursued this course of study for four more years at the University of Michigan following her return home. Her courses of study focused on human, Betazed, Klingon and Ferengi culture.
While on Betazed she acquired a pet, a Betazoid Felona kit, named "Charlie". A Felona kit has a life span of 75 to 85 years. It looks like a cross between an earth kitten and a spider monkey. It has shiny black, rabbit-soft fur and large steel blue eyes. It is very wiry and is fond of hanging by its tail when it sleeps. Audra kept Charlie with her while on board the Endeavour.
Audra became interested in starships after her trip to Betazed and became interested in taking shuttle flying lessons. During her years of study at the U of M she took sporadic lessons and was able to earn her shuttle pilot's license. During her summer vacations she logged hours shuttling tourists from Europe to Michigan for "wilderness" vacations in the UP.
Audra's interest in starships grew during her years at Michigan. After completing her master's level studies in cultural anthropology she found herself crazing to know more about starships and intergalactic travel. She sent for information on Starfleet Academy and suddenly found herself filling out an application. At age 23 she was tested and admitted to Starfleet Academy.
Her four years at the Academy were exhilarating, although challenging. She honed her piloting skills and also became interested in engineering. Her specialities were Transporter Systems Theory and Operations and Holodeck Environment simulation Theory. Her instructors wanted her to zero in on a specific area of study, but she found it almost impossible. In her final year at the Academy, upon being forced to make a choice, Audra listed her major as Transporter Systems.
Her first assignment was on the Miranda Class Starship, the Curie. The Curie is a research vessel. During her service aboard the Curie, he ship traveled the galaxy looking for and collecting space debris abandoned by human and alien cultures. Their mission was to catalog this debris to be use d for future studies on the development of space travel in different cultures. This knowledge will be useful when Starfleet vessels encounter more primitive cultures who are only beginning to develop their space travel capacities.
While on the Curie, Audra';s duties included transporter maintenance and operation. To her delight, she was often unofficially consulted by the ship's counselor about protocol when the Curie's crew came into contact with alien cultures. Her expertise in Betazed culture was even tapped by the captain himself, when he prepared to attend the "Celebration of Intergalactic Friendship" on Betazed.
During her first year on board the Curie, Audra fell hopelessly in love with a Betazed metallurgist named Mica Taw. Mica was on board for one year as a civilian consultant. He wanted Audra to resign her commission and return with him to Betazed. As much as she loved him, she could not bring herself to do it. Mica grudgingly signed on for another year, so the two could stay together. it was during this year that their daughter, Lara, was born.
Mica's insistence that Audra leave Starfleet increased. The Curie did not allow crew families on board. Audra told Mica that she would resign, but only after completing her mission assignment. Mica became infuriated and made plans to return to Betazed with Lara. He told her they would be returning to his home and would wait for her there. He said he would contact her as soon as they were settled. Word never came.
Audra tried in vain to contact Mica. Finally, she took a three month personal leave and journeyed to Betazed to find him herself. That's when she found out that his life had been a lie. The people of the town he had named as his home knew nothing about him. In fact, she could turn up no evidence that Mica Taw had ever existed.
She returned to her duties aboard the Curie with a heavy heart. She grieved for her tiny daughter, not yet six months old. Her feelings for Mica began to change and evolve. She no longer felt a sense of loss and pain over his disappearance. She began to feel only a smoldering loathing for him. She had no idea where Mica and their baby had gone, but she was hopeful that someday soon their paths would cross again. She could not stand the thought of never seeing her child again.
Audra finished her tour of duty aboard the Curie and was stationed at her request, on DS9. Her temporary assignment was to help with the up dating and maintenance of the Transporter and Holographic Systems on DS9. Her duties also allowed her to monitor all beings arriving at and departing from the space station. On several occasions she was able to question some of the arrivals in the hopes of finding out some information about the location of her child, but there was no news.
Audra's sense of adventure surfaced again upon hearing the news that the Enterprise would be restaffing in preparation for another mission. She immediately sent in her request for transfer and was assigned to the Enterprise as Transporter Chief. The Enterprise's mission in the Gamma Quadrant was cut short when, during an alien attack, the starship experienced a warp core breech and had to eject the core. Audra applied for transfer to the newly commissioned USS Endeavour and was delighted to learn that several of her shipmates would be transferred too.
Audra is currently Transporter Chief aboard the USS Alliance.
