2378 - Star Fleet Academy - Civilian Shuttlecraft crash - Brief Account - Refer to Star Fleet Academy Records for mmmore information.

Four days after Graduation she was coming back from a scuba diving trip with
a group of fellow graduates, when the civilian shuttlecraft they were on
crashed during landing.   While the accident was extremely bad, the fact that it had
occurred at the Academy's Field and the rapid response of Fleet Emergency
Services, was what saved most of those those injured.  Andrea was severely
injured and nearly killed out right internal injuries, skull fracture, two
crushed vertebrae, both legs broken in several places, several, broken ribs
and left arm.  Andrea had to be resusitated at the crash site.   Two other
graduates were killed and nine others injured, six seriously.  One of those killed was
Nathan Kilgore, Andi’s best friend at the Academy.  Later during recovery and
physical therapy Vasquez was assigned to the Star Fleet Academy Engineering
Training Facility as an Assistant Instructor in Basic Engineering.  She would
later be also positioned as Safety Officer for the Engineering Emergency
Repair Class.

Bio - Andrea Moia Vasquez
Detail:
Born to Cmdr. Maria Sandel, an Astrophysicist and Lt. Cmdr. Migel Vasquez,
Geologist, while they were assigned to the Vulcan Science Vessel Ral'Tulk.
Andrea is what one would have called a Service Brat.  With both of her
parents in Star Fleet, she spent most of her youth aboard a Fleet vessel or to some
other Fleet Facility.   The idea of service to country and honor to family
and friends runs deep in her family.  Her Grandparents on both sides and both of
her brothers and her sister were in Star Fleet. As were many of her aunts and
uncles and several cousins.   There has a Vasquez serving in Star Fleet in some
capacity since its founding.   Thus is was only natural that Andrea would join.

Andrea, or Andi to her family and friends, does attend regular church
services aboard ship and celebrates all of the important religious days.   She is the
youngest of four children.  Her older brothers Jose and Franklin are also in Star fleet,
as is her older sister Susanna.  Her sister Susanna married Robert Hitchcock
they have twin girls age 8.   They are assigned to the Deep Space Communication
Array 219.

Her brother Franklin was assigned to the Tolstoy as a Security Officer when
the Tolstoy joined the fleet at Wolf 359 to face the Borg. Franklin did not come
home. Neither did two of her cousins, Francine and Markus who were aboard the
Coventry NCC-67453, a Samson Class Destroyer.

Andrea's older brother, Jose, has the rank of Lt. and is in engineering and
assigned to Deep Space Eight. His primary training is in computer programming
and in power distribution systems and a generalist. He is engaged to Lt.
Cathy Longwood a nurse at the Deep Space Eight, after a long and serious
relationship with Longwood.  Longwood recently turned down a posting to the USS Osceola,
to remain with Jose. They have not set a date but are considering at least a
year.

Andrea is 1.72 meters in height and usually of less than average weight.
This is something the Alliance’s Chief Medical Officer, Lt David Fergerson,
reminds her of at every physical.  She has long black hair streaked with silver which
hangs to the middle of her back.  She usually wears her hair in a pony tail and
tucked into the back of her uniform so it does not get in the way while working.
Her skin is light brown but her eyes are dark blue.

Among her favorite free time activities are tinkering with ship board systems
to make them run better.  This has gotten her into some slight trouble now and
then as her tinkering has proved to be a minor irritant to Commander Taggert.
There have been a few acceptable improvements she has made, which keeps Commander
Taggert at bay, at times.  One improvement was to the shuttlecraft hatch
locking latches.  If a shuttle landed hard enough. or was shaken enough in flight,
the latches could slip off their pins.   The hatch could then become disengaged
from the shuttle.   She improved the design.  Andrea received a Special
Commendation for Engineering Design Upgrade.

Andrea also has a First Degree Brown Belt in Karate and is working her way
towards earning her Black Belt.  She takes regular martial art classes aboard
ship.  Andrea enjoys orbital sky diving, ever since trying it with some of
her friends aboard the Alliance in a holo deck program.  She has yet to find a
recreational facility that offers the sport for real.  Andrea is not sure
that she would do it for real without the safety of the holo deck.  She also
enjoys scuba diving.

Her last away mission was to salvage one of the ship’s defense transports the
Socrates.  It was her first away mission where she had been placed in
command. She had also not worked on a defense transport before, yet she knew most of
the systems though.

There was a training flight which included a touch an go landing at a planet
there were orbiting.  There was a storm and the shuttle had come down in a
pond when the pilot attempted to land.  Instead of just lifting the craft up on
anti-gravs the inexperienced pilot had panicked and opened the door flooding
the shuttle.  The pilot had to swim away and call for rescue.

It was Andrea's task to come back to the ship with the shuttle.  She and her
team of three had shuttled down in the Foresight to the planet with supplies
and equipment.  The Alliance continued on its assignment.  They would return
in five days.  With diving gear Andrea swam down to the sunken shuttle and got
it up and out of the water using the anti-gravs.  She landed on the shore near
where they were camped.  The shuttle was in good shape but was thoroughly soaked.
It had sat opened to the water for too long for the shuttle to be space worthy.
She and her team then field stripped the entire shuttle and put it back together
with nearly a day to spare.

During the first day Andrea had wondered about the necessity of the away
mission. The Alliance could have easily transported the entire shuttle up from the
bottom of the pond.  It was then she reasoned that she and her team were being
tested. The planet Holten II was a Federation member and it was primarily a farming
world. There were no hostiles about.  It was a rather safe place to conduct some
field training.  She did not mention her thoughts to the others.  It was her first
away mission where she had been placed in command.
