Terry James was born in Gilbraltar on October 13, 2344.

His PhD was earned at Oxford University where he entered as an undergrad at the age of 16.

His childhood was spent in North America and on various Starbases. His parents were unremarkable enlisted personnel in Starfleet Support Services.

He has an appetite for learning and is self taught for the most part. Curiosity drove the young Terry into learning many different disciplines, before finally settling upon paleontology. He joined Starfleet at the age of 25 and earned his commission working his way up. He started as a lab tech and research assistant despite his education.

He has spent countless hours in the field on digs and has served as a staff paleontologist on several expeditions into remote areas. His assignment prior to the Endeavour was heading an evolutionary biology team on the USS Mendel.

He is a close friend of Cam MacLaughlin. This friendship solidified during the time Cam was involved with Terry's cousin, Scott James. The relationship between Scott and Cam tended to be very explosive and Terry found himself taking Cam's side in many an argument. During this time, Terry was involved in his thesis work and did his field work with an expedition that Cam was involved with. He gained her professional respect for his findings and methods. She encouraged him at one time to apply to Starfleet. Their relationship can be best described as big brother little sister. They disagree on points but deep down (though they don't admit it openly) they love each other.

He is low key and likeable. He listens well and works in team situations easily. He enjoys a good tease. He is very willing to endure dangerous situations in the effort to gain new knowledge and never shirks hard work. He demands perfection from his techs and pays close attention to details.

For recreation he enjoys creating holodeck programs and is a runner. He has a strong liking for the outdoors and a fondness for nature.

After serving for two years aboard the USS Endeavour, Terry was transferred to DS13.
