Jen'aira (full name, pronounced 'Jen'air-uh) was born and raised on the planet Cait. Caitians are well known for their intelligence and cooperative spirit, not to mention their impressive hearing, eyesight, agility and speed. For these reasons, Caitians are quite sought after by Starfleet.

Jen'aira fits the Caitian stereotypical mold almost perfectly and considers her greatest qualities to be her respect for all life and her tolerance. She seeks and lives only the truth and would not deceive another person unless someone's life (not her own) depended on it. She is a superb listener and loves to laugh, as humans often make her do. But despite the intelligence, resourcefulness, and drive of the human species, Jen'aira has found them to be generally ruder and more abrupt than Caitians. For this reason, her years on Earth have made her slightly withdrawn, and she generally will not initiate social activities with other adults unless she knows them well. She waits for others to "make the first move." But she still enjoys being with humans and loves making an impact on the lives of the teenagers she works with.

Jen'aira's agility was compromised somewhat when she lost her tail in a freak accident during one of her childhood participations in The Hunt, a semi-annual event on Cait which honors the predatory history of the Caitian race. Due to unalterable rules that govern The Hunt (tail grafts were not available to her ancestors), Jen'aira must make do without a tail. She has never been resentful of this. In fact, since she is now living with mainly humans--who are not used to looking out for tails when they step--she almost considers her loss a small gain.

Education is honored above all else on Cait. Strict standards must be met in order to become a teacher there. Jen'aira decided at an early age (11 Earth years) that she wanted to be a teacher like the ones from whom she so enjoyed learning. When she was 14, a human sociologist and his daughter came to study the Caitian educational system. They observed one of her classes for a long period of time, and Jen'aira's curiosity quickly prompted her to speak with them. The girl, whose name was Lena, especially intrigued Jen'aira and they became good friends (Lena had beginning abilities at speaking Caitian, but Jen'aira had fun deciphering her words and teaching her more). Lena told her how she had traveled with her mother on one of the great starships in Starfleet and Jen'aira was fascinated by the girl's stories. By the time Lena and her father had to leave, Jen'aira had made her decision; yes, she was going to teach in Starfleet. Her family, who was used to her occasional boldly impulsive decisions and knew she could not be talked out it , supported her decision to leave Cait at 16 and travel to Earth, armed with a thick stack of Caitian books about teaching methodology. On Earth, under a complete grant from Oxford University, she focused on mastering the English language so she wouldn't be disadvantaged upon entering Starfleet Academy.

Jen'aira left some of her happiness behind when she left home, however; his name was Rowl'nan, and he had been her "wurra" (closest English approximation would be 'boyfriend') for almost two years. She visits home whenever she can and the two have remained good friends over the years, but she still has rather strong feelings for him and occasionally wonders if she should have chosen this future over a future with Rowl'nan. So far, her enjoyment of teaching Future Cadet Training classes outweighs her desire to start a family.

She still participates in The Hunt on Cait when she can and does everything, through her daily lifestyle to preserve other beliefs and practices of her race.
