"FIRST CONTACT"

by Monica Veasey

Ensign Terry Sauter walked out of Ensign Peter Maison's quarters. Actually she stormed out. Angry and hurt that after 11 months of dating he decided they should see other people.

"Imagine!" she fumed, talking out loud to herself. "I thought we were getting close! I thought we had something really special going! Stupid, stupid, stupid!"

With her head down, she stomped back towards her own quarters, not paying attention to where she was going, until she smashed into another person. Terry was in such a fury that when she slammed into Ambassador Brendan Blake she hit with such force that it knocked the Ambassador back two steps and sent her flying backwards to the deck.

"Whoa! What was that?" she asked, sitting back on her arms.

Ambassador Blake quickly came to the aid of the little Ensign. "Ensign, are you hurt?" he asked, bending down beside her.

Terry shook her head to clear it. "Ah, I'm ok, I guess. She didn't notice whom she was talking to until he offered her an arm up. Taking it she finally looked at whom she had so unceremoniously slammed into.

"Ambassador Blake! Oh, I'm so sorry, sir! I didn't see you! It's all my fault! Are you ok?"

"Calm down, Ensign...?

"Sauter, sir. Ensign Terry Sauter, Utilities and Auxiliary Specialist, sir!" she shouted, embarrassed.

"Relax Ensign Terry Sauter. It appears you have received the worst of the encounter."

"No, sir, I'm fine sir."

"And, please, stop siring me. I'm no officer," he said trying to put her at ease.

"Yes, sir. I mean, ah, no sir. I mean, sorry Ambassador." Terry was flustered. Of all the people to bump into, it had to be an Ambassador! That was almost as bad as plowing into the Captain!

Blake smiled at the young Ensign who in reality was not much younger than he was, but she appeared to him as one very young and inexperienced with life.

"Well, Ensign Terry Sauter, if you are sure you are all right, then I will be on my way."

"Yes, ...Ambassador Blake. I'm fine."

As they began to walk past each other, Blake called, "And Ensign..."

"Yes Ambassador?"

"Keep your head up," he smiled.

"Yes, I will do that, Ambassador. Thank you."

Terry took two steps and bumped into another ensign. She didn't turn around, but was sure she could hear Ambassador Blake softly laughing.

"Stupid, stupid, stupid!" she muttered, her face turning a beat red.
