Actinides--Radioactive compounds often found in uranium ore which make it difficult for sensors to operate effectively.

Acrybite--Mined substance.

Airponics Bay--Compartment aboard some Federation starships dedicated to plant cultivation using a moist air medium rather than soil.

Alans--Specialist in volcanology and geomechanics.

Alternative Reality--Parallel universe which is a copy of our universe, but with a different timeline.

Altine Conference--Scientific conference held in 2369.

Alvanian Beehive--Insect community known for its frenetic activity.

Ampheon--Term used for a dead star in an antimatter universe.

Amphibian--A vertebrate animal capable of living both on land and in water. The reproductive cycles of amphibians often involve both aquatic and land-based phases.

Anaphasic Life-form--Noncorporeal, sentient, and extremely long-lived life-form that requires a corporeal host to maintain its molecular cohesion.

Ancestrial Spirits--Name given to the supernatural entities that are revered by members of the Nechisti Order on the Nechani homeworld.

Anionic Energy--Form of energy composed of quantum-level particles.

Antilepton Interference--Energy particle field that can interfere with subspace communications.

Antimatter--Matter whose electrical charge properties are the opposite of "normal" matter. For example, a "normal" proton has a positive charge, but an antiproton has a negative charge. When a particle of antimatter is brought into contact with an equivalent particle of normal matter, both particles are annihilated, and a considerable amount of energy is released. The controlled annihilation of matter and antimatter is used as the power source for the warp drive systems used aboard Federation starships.

Antiprotons--Subatomic particles identical to protons except for electrical charge.

Antithoron--Antimatter equivalent of radon-220.

Arachnid--Referring to any arthropod of the class Arachnida, including spiders, mites, ticks, and scorpions.

Arboretum--Science lab aboard Federation starships devoted to the study of plants. The flooring of an arboretum is covered with soil and planted with various vegetative species, both for scientific study and for the enjoyment of the crew.

Artificial Quantum Singularity--Synthetically created microscopic black hole. Used by the Romulans as a power source.

Antitime--Time and antitime are like matter and antimatter. When time and antitime collide, a breach in spacetime is formed.

Anyons--Particles produced by the interaction between phased matter and normal matter.

Archaeology--Study of ancient civilizations and life-forms.

Arctic Spider--Cold climate animal life form.

Arkarian Water Fowl--Ornithoid species native to planet Arkaria. The birds' mating habits are regarded as interesting.

Array--Large spaceborne installation located in the Delta Quadrant.

Artificial Wormhole--The first known instance of an artificially created wormhole was the Bajoran Wormhole, created by unknown entities in the Denorious Belt.

Astatine--Mineral found on planet Orellius. May have created a duonetic field found in the planet's atmosphere.

Asteroid--Small, rocky celestial object, usually much smaller than a planet, often irregularly shaped. Asteroids often occur in orbital belts within a star system, sometimes the debris remaining from the formation of that system, other times the fragments remaining from the disintegration of a planet. Larger asteroids are sometimes called planetoids.

Asteroid Belt--Band of several thousand small bodies revolving around Earth's sun between the orbits of Mars and Jupiter.

Asteroid Gamma 601--Moon-sixed asteroid located in the Devolin system.

Astral Eddy--Spatial phenomenon occurring at the interfold between space and subspace. Astral eddies can involve massive discharges of plasmatic energy with temperature gradients of up to nine million kelvins. Such phenomena can be very violent and destructive to space vehicles.

Astrometric Readings--A determination of the date by observing the apparent positions of the stars.

Astrometrics--Stellar cartographic laboratory aboard a Federation starship or station.

Atlantis Project--An ambitious 24th century project to create a small continent in the middle of Earth's Atlantic Ocean.

Atmospheric Dissipation--Rare and unpredictable phenomenon in which severe plasmonic energy bursts rapidly burn off the atmospheric layers of a planetary body. Once the process begins, it is unstoppable by any known means.

AU--Abbreviation for Astronomical Unit, a measure of length equal to the distance from the Earth to the Sun, some 150 million kilometers.

Audubon Park--Nature preserve located in New Orleans on Earth.

Australopithecine--Referring to protohuman life-forms that inhabited Earth some 4 to 5 million years ago. Australopithecine species include Australopithecus afarensis, A. africanus, A. robustus, and A. boisei.

Azure Nebula--Interstellar gas cloud located near the border of Klingon and Federation space. The Azure Nebula is a type-11 nebula, cobalt blue in color, and contains sirillium gas.

Baby Wormhole--Alternate term for micro-wormhole.

Bacillus Spray--Organic pesticide, whose major component is one of a number of rod-shaped bacteria, usually B, thuringiensis. The pesticide works by infecting plant parasites with a fatal dose of the bacterium.

Bajoran Institute of Science--Bajoran research center, located on the planet Bajor.

Bajoran Lilac--Variety of floriculture indigenous to planet Bajor.

Bajoran Wormhole--Wormhole situated near Bajor and Deep Space 9. Used by the Federation for travelling to the Gamma Quadrant.

Baktun--Measure of time used by the now-extinct Tkon Empire. A baktun was a large number of years, possibly centuries or millennia.

Balancar Agricultural Consortium--International business alliance on planet Balancar.

Bamboo--Any of some 500 species of woody reedlike grass plants indigenous to Earth.

Bantaca--Large stone spire built at the center of ancient Bajoran cities, said to mark the city's place in the cosmos. Bantacas were about 11 meters tall, made of hundreds of stones fitted together so tightly that they didn't require mortar. Symbols carved into the spires helped provide clues leading to the discovery of the city in 2373.

Barrier, Galactic--Mysterious energy field at the perimeter of the Milky Way galaxy.

Barrowbug--Insect life indigenous to the planet Bajor.

Baryon Particles--Any member of a class o heavy fundamental particles.

Barzon Wormhole--Unstable wormhole situated near the Barzan system.

Bat--Nocturnal flying mammal with greatly elongated forelimbs and wings formed by skin stretched over long digits.

Bemonite--Metallic ore. Bemonite tends to inhibit energy propagation such as that employed in a transporter beam.

Beritium--Metallic substance. Some Bajoran earrings are made out of diamide-laced beritium.

Bersallis Firestorms--Deadly phenomena on planet Bersallis III that occur every seven years, caused by particle emissions from the planet's sun. The storms can reach temperatures of 300 degrees. Centigrade and wind velocities of over 200 kilometers per hour.

Berthold Radiation--Form of radiation, deadly to Terrans.

Beta Matrix Compositor--Main component of a plasma distribution manifold of Cardassian manufacture. Beta matrix compositors cannot be reproduced with replicator technology.

Beta Renner Cloud--An intelligent, spaceborne entity.

Beta-tachyon--Form of particle that can exist only at faster-than-light velocities.

Biogenic Field--Form of naturally occurring energy.

Biomatter--Other name for organic material.

Bioship--Spaceship made of biomatter.

Bilitrium--Crystalline compound that is an extremely rare energy source. When used in conjunction with an antimatter converter, it becomes a powerful explosive.

Binary Pulsar--Stellar formation of twin rapidly spinning neutron stars orbiting a common center of gravity.

Bio-dart--Natural biological defense system of the Voth people in the Delta Quadrant. The Voth are able to shoot small darts from special orifices on their forearms. The darts deliver a fast-acting chemical that can temporarily render another individual unconscious.

Bitrious Filaments--Mineral traces found in the soil on Melona IV in 2368 and on three other planets attacked by the Crystalline Entity. Bitrium was apparently produced when the entity absorbed living matter.

Black Cluster--An astronomical formation created  some nine billion years ago when hundreds of proto-stars collapsed in close proximity to each other. The resulting formation is fraught with violent, unpredictable gravitational wavefronts. The phenomena, which can absorb energy, are extremely dangerous to spacecraft systems.

Black Star--Alternate term for a black hole.

Boronite--Construction material used in the fabrication of Vostigye space stations. Boronite, which is an extremely rare mined substance, is the only raw material known that can be used to create Omega molecules.

Brizeen Nitrate--Chemical substance used as a soil enhancer on Bajor.

Buranian--Archaeological period classification on planet Marlonia.

Calculus--Branch of higher mathematics first devised on Earth by Isaac Newton.

Carbon 60--Isotope of the element carbon. Carbon 60 is used in the construction of Vostigye space stations.

Cetacean Institute--Aquarium and marine-biology research facility located in Sausalito on Earth in the 20th century.

Chamra Vortex--Nebula in the Gamma Quadrant containing millions of asteroids.

Chin'toka System--Strategically important planetary system that in late 2374 was held by the Dominion during their war with the Alpha Quadrant powers. The Chin'toka System was the site of a decisive battle in which Federation, Klingon, and Romulan forces destroyed a sophisticated Cardassian automated defense system, landing ground troops on Cardassian territory.

Chlorinide--An extremely hazardous corrosive substance.

Chlorobicrobes--Agricultural spray applied to a Bajoran bean crop to increase production.

Chloroplast--In botany, an organelle containing chlorophyll, found in a plant cell.

Chromodyamic Power Module--Power system employed by Pralor Automated Personnel Units. Chromodynamic power module receptacles were energized by tripolyner plasma.

Chrondite--Mineral compound. Chrondites were found in the core of an asteroid that nearly impacted on planet Tessen III in 2368.

Chronometric Data--Temporal measurements of the space-time continuum, particularly those pertaining to time travel.

Chronometric Particle--The same as a chroniton.

Chroniton Particles--Subatomic particles that transmit temporal quanta.

Class-1 Sensor Probe--An instrumented torpedo launched from Federation starships for investigation into areas that one might not wish to take the starship. The class-1 probe carries a very wide range of scientific sensing equipment.

Class-4 Probe--Starfleet scientific instrument used for remote sensing studies.

Class-5 Probe--Medium-range reconnaissance probe equipped with passive sensors and recording systems.

Class-8 Probe--An instrumented sensor probe similar to a photon torpedo designed for extended flight at high warp speeds.

Coalsack--Dark nebula that exists of dust.

Coaxial Warp--Form of warp travel that works by locally folding space.

Cochrane--Unit of subspace distortion named after Zephrem Cochrane, the inventor of warp drive.

Coherent Graviton Pulse--Energy waves that can neutralize tetryon emissions.

Cochrane Distortion--A characteristic fluctuation in the phase of a subspace field generated by a starship's warp engines.

Co-orbital Satellites--A pair of objects (such as planetoids) whose orbits are very close to each other. Under certain circumstances, a near collision between the two bodies can result in each object assuming the orbit previously occupied by the other. In other words, the two objects trade orbits.

Consciousness Parasite--Noncorporeal life-form that enters a host consciousness just before the moment of death. Once in the mind of the individual, the parasite attemps to coerce the host's consciousness into a matrix, where it can be slowly consumed to sustain the parasite.

Corado I Transmitter Array--Subspace communications relay and booster facility near Deep Space 9.

Corgal Research Center--Scientific institution.

Cormaline--Mineral substance.

Cosmic String Fragment--An almost infinitely thin filament of almost infinitely dense matter. Although a string fragment can exhibit a gravitational pull of a hundred stars, it is no wider than a proton. Cosmic strings emanate a characteristic set of subspace frequencies which are caused by the decay of atomic particles along the string's event horizon.

Cosmological Constant--In astrophysics, the cosmological constant is the measure of the intensity of gravitational attraction generated by a given quantity of matter. This exact value, as well as the total mass of all the matter in the universe, will determine the ultimate fate of the universe, whether it will continue to expand to the point of maximum entropy, or whether it will collapse upon itself trillions of years from now.

Cretaceous Period--Interval of geologic time that started 136 million years ago on Earth and lasted some 70 million years. Earth's dinosaurs became almost totally extinct at the end of the Cretaceous, with the notable exception of some hadrosaurs.

Cultural Database--Archive of information stored in computers on Federation starships and space stations. The cultural database contains information pertaining to the rites and customs of all civilizations known to the Federation.

Cryonetrium--Substance that remains gaseous at cryogenic temperatures near absolute zero.

Cyanoacrylates--A substance not normally found aboard starships. This compound if capable of generating low levels of eichner radiation, which were found to stimulate growth of certain strains of deadly plasma plague.

Cyrillian Microbe--Single-celled organism.

Cytoplasmic Protein--Biochemical compounds contained in the jellylike cytoplasm of plant cells.

Dark Matter--Form of matter that exists of particles which don't emit any electromagnetic radiation, making it invisible and hard to detect.

D'Arsay Archive--Spaceborne data-storage facility launched over 87 million years ago by a civilization known as the D'Arsay. The archive contained records of artifacts and personalities from D'Arsay mythology.

D'Arsay Symbols--Pictograms from ancient D'Arsay mythology representing characters and events from those stories.

Dalvin Hissing Beetle--Insectoid life-form.

Dark Matter Nebula--Interstellar gas or dust cloud that emits or reflects little or no detectable light or other energy.

Decibel--Unit of measure for comparing sound intensity. One-tenth of a bel. Abbreviated dB. Sound above 140 dB can cause pain in the human ear.

Dekyon Field--Subspace phenomenon that can travel across a temporal causality loop.

Dekyons--Particles which cause breaches in subspace which disrupts communications.

Delaure Belt--Area of space with high hyperonic radiation. The DeLaure belt is situated near Tau Cygna V.

Delta Radiation--Form of hazardous energy. Delta radiation emitted from a star can interfere with a ship's sensors.

Delta Rays--Type of radiation produced by older engines. Delta rays refer to moderate energy electrons which have been kicked off a nucleus by the passage of a nearby high energy charged particle.

Delta-series Radioisotopes--Category of radioactive elements that are toxic to humans.

Denevan Crystals--Contraband material. It is a crime to possess or sell Denevan crystals in the Federation.

Denkir--Unit of volume measure used by Zibalians. One hundred denkirs is about equal to 200 milliliters.

Denorios Belt--Area of space between Bajor and Cardassia with very high neutrino activity.

Dermal Residue--Substance left behind on inanimate objects after contact with humanoid skin.

Deuterium--Isotope of hydrogen consisting of one proton and one neutron in the nucleus, around which circles a single electron. Cryogenic (extremely cold) deuterium was the primary fuel source for the fusion impulse-engine reactors in Federation starships. Deuterium was also used as one of the reactants in the matter/antimatter reaction system in those ships' warp drive. The deuterium was the matter, and anti-hydrogen served as the antimatter.

Diamide--Metallic substance. Some Bajoran earrings are made out of diamide-laced beritium.

Dicosillium--Substance used by Dr. Nel Apgar to create reflective coils for the Krieger-wave converter he was trying to develop at the time of his death in 2366.

Displacement Wave--Spatial phenomenon characterized by a polarized magnetic variation of space.

Distortion Ring Being--A noncorporeal life-form that is a sentient spacial phenomenon capable of literally changing the shape of space.

Dikironium--Gaseous element, formerly thought to be merely a laboratory curiosity.

Dilithium--Crystalline substance used in warp propulsion systems aboard starships. Dilithium regulates the matter/antimatter reactions that provide the energy necessary to warp space and travel faster than light. Naturally occurring dilithium is extremely rare and is mined on only a few planets. Until the advent of recrystallization techniques that permitted the production of synthetic dilithium, the crystals were among the most valuable substances in the galaxy.

Dimensional Shifter--Transporting device used by the Ansata. It uses spacefolding and its major side effects are DNA breakdown and accelerated cellular aging.

Distortion Field--Phenomenon present in the atmosphere of planet Nervala IV. The field prevents the use of transporters or shuttlecraft, effectively isolating the planet.

Dodecahedron--Twelve-sided geometric solid.

Dolamide--Chemical energy source used in a wide variety of applications such as power generators, reactors, and in an extremely pure form, for weapons.

DNA-- Acronym for deoxyribonucleic acid, a complex chemical chain containing the genetic codes enabling the reproduction of life on many planets. Virtually every individual life form on such planets has a DNA code, which contains information common to that species, as well as distinguishing information unique to that individual. Because of this, DNA sequencing can be used as a means of positively identifying an individual, although it cannot distinguish between the individual and a clone. Many humanoid species throughout the galaxy share a common DNA structure, a characteristic that was recently discovered to be due to a humanoid species that lived some four billion years ago that seeded many planets with primordial genetic material.

Draco Lizards--Species of flying reptile indigenous to southeast Asia on planet Earth. The Draco lizard was extinct by the year 2000.

Draebidium Calimus--Type of plant.

Draebidium Froctus--Type of plant.

Drake Equation--Twentieth-century Earth scientific concept for estimating the number of technologically-sophisticated civilizations in the galaxy. Postulated by Earth astronomer Frank Drake before his planet's first contact with explorers from planet Vulcan, the Drake Equation was based on estimates of the total number of stars in the galaxy, the fraction of those stars that had planetary systems, the fraction of those planets what could support life, and so on.

Duck Blind--Nickname given to a holographic image generator used to disguise the anthropological field research station on Mintaka III.

Duranium--Extremely strong metallic alloy commonly used in spacecraft construction such as in the hulls of Starfleet shuttlecraft making them difficult to cut into. Klingon Birds-of-Prey were partially built of duranium.

Dust Shrouds--Natural phenomenon located near the equator of planet Rinax.

Dynametric Array--Scientific analytical tool.

Dynamite--Chemical explosive developed on Earth by 19th century scientist Alfred Nobel. Although intended by Nobel for industrial and construction applications, dynamite was used as a deadly weapon of war.

Dynoscanner--Sensor device used to detect low-level molecular activity.

Earth-Saturn Probe--The first successful piloted mission from Earth to Saturn.

E-band Emissions--Electromagnetic signals sometimes emitted by collapsing protostars.

Edosian Orchid--Type of exotic flowering plant.

Egg--An instrumental sensor probe designed to record the decay of neutronium expelled during a stellar explosion.

Einsteinian--A system is Einsteinian when it's strictly restricted to relativity.

Electrodynamic Turbulence--Strong and unpredictable currents in the upper atmosphere of some planetoids. Electrodynamic turbulence can pose a hazard to aircraft and shuttlecraft flight.

Element 247--Stable transuranic element with an atomic number of 247.

Elway Theorem--Scientific treatise that proposed transport through a spatial fold as an alternative to matter-energy transport. This method of transportation was found to cause cumulative and irreversible damage to the transport subject.

Emission Nebula--Interstellar dust cloud that is also a source of electromagnetic radiation. Emission nebulas can prevent a cloaking device from functioning.

Energy Vortex--Unexplained time-space disturbance near the Endicor system.

Engram Transcriptor--Device used to record an individual's thoughts for later examination. Used exclusively by the  Mari.

Entropy--Tendency of matter and energy to become increasingly random over time. A decrease in local entropy can be evidence of life.

Epsilon 119--Dead star.

Epsilon Pulsar Cluster--Astronomical phenomenon located in the Epsilon IX Sector.

Erosene Winds--Delightful euphoria-inducing winds that occur on planet Alastria at the break of dawn. Also called the dawn zephyr.

Event Horizon--Gravitational boundary surrounding a quantum singularity, from which no light or space-normal object can escape.

Exanogen Gas--An extremely cold gaseous compound used to retard the feeding and growth of nitrium metal parasites.

Exatanium--Exotic metallic alloy.

Exobiology--The study of alien life.

Exochemistry--Required class at Starfleet Academy.

Exocomp--Experimental servomechanism developed by Dr. Farallon for use in hazardous engineering applications. The exocomps incorporated an advanced microreplication system, providing the device with the ability to fabricate specialized tools for virtually any task, and ample onboard intelligence to make realtime repair decisions. The exocomps were later found to have a sufficient degree of intelligence to qualify as sentient life-forms.

Exogenic field--Unstable energy field that can exist around a planet when unstable elements are present in the planet's core. Under certain conditions, exogenic fields can cause quantum reactions, producing high levels of hazardous subspace metreon radiation.

Exothermal Inversion--A dramatic upheaval in a planet's atmosphere caused by an external energy source.

Eye of the Universe--Translation of the Skrreean term for the Bajoran wormhole.

Fabrini Book of the People--Massive printed text containing all the knowledge of the Fabrini people, provided by their creators, to be read when the asteroid/ship Yonada reached its final destination.

Fal-tor-pan--Ancient Vulcan ritual, also called the refusion, intended to reunite an individual's katra (living spirit) to that person's body.  Until 2285, the ceremony had not been performed for centuries, since in most cases a Vulcan's katra is returned home after the death of the body. Sarek requested the fal-tor-pan for his son, Spock, whose body had been regenerated at the Genesis Planet following his death there in 2285. The ritual was successful.

Falangian Diamond--Precious stone.

Federation Archaeology Council--Organization of Federation archaeologists.

Federation Science Council--Governmental entity charged with advising the Federation on scientific matters.

Felaran Rose--Flowering plant native to a planet in the Delta Quadrant.

Feldomite--Mineral substance.

Fermat's Last Theorem--A mathematical puzzle devised by 17th century French mathematician Pierre de Fermat (1601-1665), who claimed to have developed a proof for the theorem that there is no whole number N where X to the Nth power, plus Y to the Nth equals Z to the Nth, where N is greater than 2. Following Fermat's death, his notes indicated he had devised a "remarkable proof" of the theorem.  In 1989, a Princeton University professor, Andrew Wiles, developed a proof of Fermat's theorem. Wiles was from Earth.

Ferroplasmic Infusion--Procedure by which high energy plasma, directed through an infusion device, is injected into a planetary body.

FGC-13 Cluster--Stellar cluster near the Amargosa Diaspora.

FGC-47--Nebula that is home to a life-form based on cohesive plasma strands that feed on the gravity fields generated by the neutron star at the center of the nebula.

Filian Python--Type of large snake that burrows in the ground.

Fima System--Planetary system in the Delta Quadrant. The Enaran people have a colony in the Fima System.

Fire Ants--Destructive and venomous mound-building red ants. Solenopsis saevissima, native to Earth, whose bites are particularly irritating to humanoids.

Fire Plains--Particularly inhospitable stretch of land on planet Vulcan. Also, an inhospitable stretch of land on the planet Den'a, home of the Khynah.

Fire Snakes--Reptilian species. Mean creatures.

Finoplak--A colorless liquid solvent, capable of dissolving Starfleet issue fabrics, but harmless to bioplast sheeting.

Fistrium--Refractory metal that was present in caves on Melona IV.

Flitterbird-- Avian life-form indigenous to planet Rhymus Major.

Floater-- Small hovercraft used for recreational transportation.

Floriculture--Cultivation of flowers or ornamental plants.

Fluidic Space--A parallel universe, filled entirely with a biological fluid.

Forced Quantumsingularity Drive--Energy source, used in Romulan starships as warp core. Energy is drained from a quantumsingularity, in fact an artificial black hole.

Flux Capacitance--A measurable physical property of energy flow.

Flux Generator--Science and engineering instrument.

Flux Spectrometer--Sensor device used aboard Federation starships.

Folded-space Transport--Technology by which objects of almost any size can be transported across incredible distances almost instantaneously.

Folnar Jewel Plant--Plant from planet Folnar III that secretes a resin which hardens into a gem.

Fourier Series--Mathematical method derived by Jean Baptiste Joseph Fourier (1768-1830). The system can define any periodic function as a sum of sine and cosine waves.

Franc--Monetary unit used by the nation-state of France during the 20th century.

Gaian Barrier--Temporal distortion, where the USS Defiant was thrown some 200 years into the past.

Galactic Energy Barrier--Energy field surrounding the entire galaxy at its boundaries.

Galaxy M33--The 33rd object in Messier's catalog of nebulae and galaxies.

Galicite--Mineral substance.

Gamma Erandi Nebula--An interstellar gasrous cloud.

Gamma Hydra--Star system.

Gamma Radiation--Highly energetic electromagnetic radiation with wavelengths less than 10 to the -10th power meters, associated with nucleaarr processes.

Garanian Bolites--Small creatures that, when applied to a person's body, cause extreme itching and brief skin discoloration. Non harmful.

Garili Tree--Blooming tree found on the Vhnori homeworld.

Garlanic Tree--Plant form indigenous to the Elaysian homworld.

Garnesite--Mineral substance. Garnesite can be heated with phaser fire to give off warmth and a dim orange light.

Gasoline--Chemical fossil fuel used on Earth during the 19th through 21st centures. A volatile, flammable liquid hydrocarbon used in internal combustion engines.

Genesis Device--Short-range torpedo intended to test the Project Genesis terraforming process.

Genesis Planet--Class-M world formed from the gaseous matter in the Mutara Nebula by the Genesis device in 2285. The planet appeared to have an almost idyllic environment, but was later learned that dangerously unstable protomatter used in the Genesis process caused the planet itself to become dangerously unstable and eventually explode.

Genesis Project--Scientific research project whose goal was to develop a process whereby uninhabitable planets could be re-formed into worlds suitable for life. Greenhouse Effect--A planetary atmospheric condition in which solar radiation is trapped in a planet's atmosphere causing increased temperature in that atmosphere.

Hally's Comet--A spectacular ball of ice that travels a predictable course through Earth's solar system. Halley's comet is visible from Earth at its perihelion, which occurs approximately every 76 years.

Hanonian land Eel--Large cave-dwelling carnivore native to planet Hanon IV. The creature is serpentine in shape and had several paddle-like appendages on either side of its body, which it used to help it move. Carnivorous.

Hara Cat--Bajoran life-form.

Harmonic Resonance Chamber--Containment device designed by the Borg to hold and stabilize an Omega molecule.

Harvesters--Deadly nanobiogenic weapon used during the centuries-long war between the T'Lani and Kellerun. Harvesters, which virtually wiped out the population of planet T'Lani III, were clear cylinders containing about two liters of lethal orange gel. All were destroyed after the war.

Hatarian System--Star system known for rich archaeological sites.

Hekaras Corridor--Region of space where warp travel is hindered except for a narrow path by the intense use of warp drives in an already sensitive area. Subspace rifts are formed where subspace manifests itself in real space on a macroscopic scale.

Helaspont Nebula--Astronomical cloud containing numerous protoplanetary masses.

Helium Fusion Enhancement--Theoretical techniques that would increase the energy output of a dying star by increasing the temperature and pressure inside the star so that the star begins helium fusion, thus increasing the star's useful life.

Helium Ignition Test--Experiment conducted by Dr. Timicin in 2367 to test his helium fusion enhancement theories. The initial test was a dramatic failure, causing a red giant star to go supernova.

High-energy Distortion Wave--Cyclic currents discovered within and around a subspace rift that formed in the Hekaras Corridor in 2370. The distortion wave was very dangerous to ships.

Hodgkins's Law of Parallel Planet Development-- Sociologic theory postulating that similar planets with similar  populations and similar environments will evolve in similar ways.

Hole in Space--A spatial phenomenon created by the extradimensional being called Nagilum. This phenomenon was used by Nagilum as a means of entrapping the starships Yamato and Enterprise-D.

Host--In the Trill joined species, a host is a humanoid life-form  in whose body resides a Trill symbiont. The combination of the two life-forms forms a single Trill individual.

Iguana--Earth reptile; any of the larger members of the family lguanidae. They can attain a length of approximately 1.8 meters. Iguana subsist mostly on fruit and vegetation.

Ikalian Asteroid Belt--Field of asteroids near the Kriosian system.

Illium 629--Naturally occurring by-product of geological decay of dilithium.

Imaging Logs--Record of visual acquisition activity by a scientific or other image-recording device, such as an astronomical observatory.

Interdimensional Rift--Discontinuity in the fabric of space-time that can be a portal to other dimensions such as the fluidic realm of Species 8472. An interdimensional rift can be created by directing a spedifically modulated resonant graviton beam into space.

Interfold Layer--Chaotic phenomenon that can form when a region of subspace intrudes into normal space. An interfold layer can cause astral eddies.

Interphasic Organisms--Nonsentient parasitic life-forms that attach themselves to the epidermal layers of their hosts with osmotic tendrils and extract cellular peptides. These entities are invisible to the naked eye and tricorders. Their presence could be determined with the use of an interphasic scanner.

Inversion Nebula--Interstellar gas cloud populated by highly unstable strands of plasma. Inversion nebulae can be incredibly beautiful, but are so unstable that they normally burn out in a few years. There are no inversion nebulae known to exist in the Alpha Quadrant.

Ion--Atom, electrically charged by 'missing' or 'extra' electrons around it.

Ion Storm--A disruptive space phenomenon characterized by intense bombardment of charged particles.

Ion Trail--(warp trail) Trail of ions, left by any ship on warp or impulse.

Ionizing Radiation--Any radiation powerful enough to cause certain atoms to become electrically charged. Large amounts of ionizing radiation are present in the Devolin system.

Ionogenic Particles--Energy type used in an attempt to contain the anionic energy that composed the noncorporeal criminal life forms from the Ux-Mal star system.

Interdimensional Rift--An interdimensional rift might be an imaginary line that divides two universes, just like the subspace barrier, that divides subspace and normal spacetime.

Interphase--Rift in the spacetime continuum. Interphase is detected through spacetime waves.

Ipasaphor--A sticky yellow substance secreted by the palms of the hands of Ocampa females undergoing elogium. The ipasaphor makes possible the six-day mating bond during which fertilization occurs. Once the ipasaphor appears, the process of mating must begin within 52 hours or conception will not be successful.

Jakmanite--A radioactive substance with a half-life of about 15 seconds, capable of causing nucleosynthesis in silicon. Jakmanite is not normally detectable by a starship's internal sensor scans.

Jenkata Nebula--Stellar gas cloud located in the Gamma Quadrant.

Kataan Probe--Small unmanned spacecraft launched during Earth's 14th century from the planet Kataan, just before the star went nova. The probe represented the Kataan people's attempt to preserve something of themselves by sending memories of their people into space.

Kavarian Tiger-bat--Animal life-form from planet Kavaria.

Kaylo--Yellow fruit, resembling an Earth apple, native to a planet in the Delta Quadrant. It is highly poisonous to humanoids; one bite of a kaylo results in choking, then painful death.

Kedion--Subatomic particle that can resonate with positrons.

Keela Flowers--Variety of multicolored small-bloom flowers, with exceptionally strong stems.

Kelbonite--Refractory metal that was present in the caves on planets Melona IV and Forlat III.

Kironide--Chemical compound found in the food of planet Platonius. Kironide is a long-lasting source of great power that, when ingested, endows many humanoids with extraordinary psychokinetic powers.

Komar--Type of trianic energy beings that live in a dark matter nebula in the Delta Quadrant. The Komar feed off the neural energy of other beings.

Krallinian Eel--Life-form. An unpleasant creature found in the Delta Quadrant.

Krenim Temporal Weapon Ship--In an alternate timeline, an incredibly powerful weapon of mass destruction. The ship created a focused temporal shock wave that actually removed an object from the continuum. Not only did the object disappear from history, but all effects of that object throughout the timeline also vanished. The ship operated in a state of temporal flux, outside normal space-time, so that it was immune not only to the effects of its temporal shock waves, but it was also impervious to most forms of attack.

Krieger Waves--Energy source, invented by Dr. Apgar at Tanuga Resarch Station near Tanuga IV.

Latinum--Valuable meal ingots used as a medium of exchange, primarily outside the Federation.

Lawman Galactopedia--A rare historical object. The last known location of the Galactopedia was in the possession of Zibalian trader Kivas Fajo.

Library Computer--Massive computer system and database carried aboard Federation starships. The storage banks of a library computer contain virtually the sum of recorded information, a vital resource to a starship on detached duty. The library computer can be accessed from any terminal aboard ship, including the science officer's station on the bridge.

Lightspeed--Physical constant which represents the speed of energy waves and massless particles in a vacuum.

Lightspeed Barrier--Absolute maximum speed for Newtonian travel. Because of relativistic mass increase and slowing time, no Newtonian-travelling object can travel at lightspeed or above. The only Newtonian systems that can travel at lightspeed are massless particles and energywaves.

Liquid Data Chains--Fluidic information storage medium.

Lithium Crystals--The lightest metal on the periodic table of elements, with an atomic number of 3 and an atomic weight of 6.941. Lithium in a form resembling crystalline quartz was a critical component of warp drive systems in early starships.

Lucrovexitrin--A highly toxic substance capable of causing nucleosynthesis in silicon. Lucrovexitrin is not normally detectable by a starship's internal sensor scans.

Neutrino--Massless subatomic particle that has no electrical charge. A major source of these particles is nuclear reactions deep within stars.

Neutrino Field--A concentration of neutrinos.

Neutron Migration--The movement of neutrons from the outer hydrogen-reaction zone to the inner helium core of a star.

Neutron Radiation--Energy discharge consisting of electrically neutral subatomic particles.

Neutronium--Matter so incredibly dense that atoms' electron shells have collapsed and the nuclei are actually touching each other.

Newtonian--A system is Newtonian when it's strictly restricted to the laws of Newton.

Nexus--Nonlinear temporal continuum in which reality appears to reshape itself in fulfillment of a person's innermost wishes. The gateway to the nexus is an energy ribbon, a temporal flux phenomenon that crosses this galaxy every 39 years. The first known contact with the nexus was in 2293.

Nictitating Membrane--An inner eyelid present in many animals, such as amphibians.

Night-Blooming Throgni--A fragrant Klingon flower.

Nitrium Metal Parasites--Spaceborne microscopic life-forms that ingest nitrium, converting it to a simple molecular gel. These life-forms normally live in nitrium-rich asteroids, such as those found in the Pelloris Field near planet Tessen III. Because nitrium is used extensively in Federation starship construction, any contact with these parasites will result in substantial damage to a ship.

Nitrogenase Compound--Useful raw material.

Nogatch Hemlock--Substance poisonous to humans. In 2372 there was no known cure for Nogatch hemlock poisoning.

Noncorporeal Life--Literally, without body. Refers to a wide number of life-forms that exist as complex patterns of energy, plasma, or gas, without any tangible physical form.

Nonlinear Dynamics--Technique for advanced statistical analysis modeling.

Nova--Burst of energy in the last phase of the life of a light star (like our sun). A nova can cause a star to reject itsouter layers.

Nucleosynthesis--Alternation of matter at the atomic level. Under certain conditions, indivium contamination can trigger spontaneous nucleosynthesis in silicon molecules like those used in glassware.

Null Space--An extremely rare "pocket" in space created during the formation of a star. The phenomenon is created by turbulent regions of magnetic and gravitational fields which coalesce into an area that absorbs all electromagnetic energy that enters it. Energy outside the null space is bent around it, making it invisible to sensors and the naked eye.

Offlander--Term used by the Ba'ku people, referring to individuals from other worlds.

Ohniaka III--Location of a Federation science station in a nonstrategic sector.

Olivine--Naturally-occurring gemstone created by volcanic processes.

Omega--The most powerful substance known by both the Federation and Borg. Omega is a very unstable, short-lived, macromolecular substance. One molecule contains the energy of an entire warp core. In theory, a small chain of Omega molecules could feed energy to an entire civilization.

Omicron Particles--Rare subatomic particles created by certain types of matter/antimatter reactions.

Onkian--Unit of temperature measure used by the Romulan Star Empire. A reading of 12 onkians corresponds to a cold (but not freezing) temperature.

Oort Cloud--Distant comets that sometimes orbit the outer periphery of a solar system.

Ophidian--Snakelike entity with extradimensional properties, who feeds off of the energy of humanoids.

Ops--Abbreviation for operations manager aboard Federation starships; also the nickname for the Operations Center aboard Federation spacestations.

Destruction of the ozone layer can therefore result in significant harm to such a planet's surface dwelling life-forms.

Paricium--Ceramic substance that was one of the components making up the Kataan Probe.

Parallel Universe--Another universe, different from ours. A parallel universe, which is a copy of our universe but with a different timeline, is called an alternative reality.

Particle Sunthesis--Advanced technology for replication of matter. Arturis's people are adept at the use of particle sysnthesis to create objects and environments. Particle synthesis is more sophisticated than the replicator systems used by the Federation Starfleet.

Passive High-resolution Series--Sequence of sensor scans.

Paulson Nebula--Astronomical cloud located in the vicinity of Zeta Alpha II. The Paulson Nebula is rich in transuranics, dilithium hydroxyls, and other elements.

Pelloris Field--Asteroid belt. The asteroids in the Pelloris Field are rich in nitrium.

Pergium--Mineral used on many planets as a source of power for life support systems.

Phase Buffer--Component of the sensor array of Galaxy-class starships. Located within the Jefferies tubes, phase butters need to be carefully aligned in order for sensors to function at maximum efficiency.

Phase Conditioners--Component of seismic regulators.

Phase Variance--Characteristic of matter relating to its alignment within a dimensional plane.

Phased--State or property of matter and energy. Things can be offset slightly in a time-like dimension from our 'phase' of the universe.

Phasing Cloak--Invisibility-screen generator that is designed not only to disguise a starship from visual and sensor detection, but also to alter the atomic structure of the ship, so that ship could pass through normal matter.

Phoenix Cluster--A dense expanse of stars, largely unexplored by 2368.

Photonic Being--Noncorporeal, sentient life-form discovered in the corona of a protostar in the Delta Quadrant.

Planetary Geosciences Laboratory--Scientific research facility located on  some Federation starships.

Planetary Classification System--A method of labeling planet types according to a letter nomenclature. Planetary classes near the letter M are generally more likely to support life. The farther from the letter M, the less likely the planet is to support life as we know it. Class-D planets are small, rocky planetoids. Class-H planets are generally extremely dry, although sometimes  habitable. Class-J planets are gas giants with turbulent atmospheres in which wind speeds of over 10,000 kilometers per hour are not unknown. Jupiter and Saturn as Class-J planets. Class-K planets are unsuitable for humanoid life, even though their gravity fields can fall within Class-M norms. Class-K planets, are adaptable for humanoid life only with the use of pressure domes and life-support systems. Class-L planets are generally small, rocky, terrestrial worlds with oxygen-argon atmospheres. Class-L worlds can sometimes support life, although this is often limited to plant forms. Class-M planets are small, rocky, terrestrial worlds with oxygen-nitrogen atmospheres, and are highly supportive of organic life.

Plasma--Scientific term for very hot, ionized gas. A starship's impulse engines leave an exhaust of plasma, which can be detected, even from a cloaked vessel.

Plasma Disruption--Violent energy discharges in space, also known as a plasma storm.

Plasma Flares--Technical component. Combined with other supplies, plasma flares can be used to create a biogenic weapon.

Plasma Strand--Cohesive strings of plasma energy found in great quantity within an inversion nebula. Plasma strands are highly unstable, and typically burn themselves out within a few years.

Plasma Streamer--Gas current flowing through space between one star in a binary pair to the other.

Pleiades Cluster--Region of space, also known as M45 or the Seven Sisters, in which many young planets are located. The Pleiades are a cluster of about 400 stars in a 25 light-year radius, some 415 light-years from Earth. One of the planets in the area is Velara III, site of a failed terraforming project.

Polaric Ion Energy--Highly energetic but unstable power source. Although early research showed polaric energy as a promising means of providing power on a planetary scale, its use ran serious risks of uncontrolled chain reactions through subspace.

Pon Farr--Vulcan term for the time of mating. Although Vulcans live strictly by the dictates of logic, their veneer of civilization is ripped away from them during Pon farr, every seven years of their adult life. The individual experiencing Pon farr will stop eating and sleeping if not allowed to return home to take a mate. During Pon farr, the brain is thrown into a neurochemical imbalance that can be fatal if the mating drive is not acted upon. The Vulcan telepathic mating bond draws mated couples irresistibly together during Pon farr ("Blood Fever").

Probe, the--Alien space probe of unknown origin that wreaked ecological havoc on planet Earth in 2286 when it attempted to contact the intelligent species, humpback whale, on that planet. The whales were extinct at that time. The damage to Earth's biosphere occurred when the probe failed to make contact with any humpback whales and increased the power of its carrier wave to tremendous levels.

Protomatter--A dangerously unstable form of matter.

Protonebula--Newly forming interstellar dust cloud.

Photons--Particles that carry electromagnetic energy.

Pralor Automated Personnel Unit--Sentient humanoid automatons built long ago by the Pralor people in their war against the Cravic. The Cravic, in turn, developed nearly identical automated weapons to counter the use of the Pralor Units. Both sides programmed these robots to destroy their enemy. Eventually, the Pralor and Cravic sued for peace, and recalled their soldier automatons. The Automated Personnel Units built by both sides correctly viewed peace as a threat to their existence, and now regarded their Builders as their enemies. Pralor and Cravic units turned on their creators, wiping them out utterly. Once their builders were gone, the Pralor and Cravic automated units continued to wage war on each other. Both the Pralor and Cravic builders took the precaution of designing the automated units' chromodynamic power modules to be impossible to replicate, thereby making the robots incapable of reproducing themselves. The Pralor automated units and their ships were silver-gray colored, while the Cravic units and ships were golden.

Predestination Paradox--In elementary temporal mechanics, a time loop in which a time traveler who has gone into the past causes an event that ultimately causes the original future version of the person to go back into the past. Protostar--Star in its earliest stages of development, shortly following the start of nuclear fusion. A protostar can emit high levels of magnetascopic interference.

Pyrocyte--A naturally occurring component of Ferengi blood. A distillation of these cells can be used as a poison to other species. While not fatal, this poison will provoke a severe allergic reaction.

Quadrant--In interstellar mapping, a quadrant is one-fourth of the Milky Way Galaxy. The galaxy is divided into four quadrants, each forming a 90-degree pie wedge as seen from above or below the galaxy's plane. The four quadrants are labeled Alpha, Beta, Delta, and Gamma. The United Federation of Planets is mostly located in the Alpha Quadrant, although parts spill over into Beta. The Klingon and Romulan Empires are located in the Beta Quadrant, although they spill over into Alpha.

Quadros-1 Probe--Deep-space instrumented probe launched to the Gamma Quadrant in the 22nd century, one of the first scientific expeditions into that distant part of the galaxy. Among the findings returned by the craft was the discovery of a trinary star system called Idran.

Quadrotriticale--Genetically engineered grain developed on Earth from a four-lobed hybrid of wheat and rye.

Quantometer Probe--Scientific instrument used to measure energy usage.

Quantum Chemistry--Course taught in the fourth year of the Starfleet Academy curriculum.

Quantum Filament--An elongated subatomic object, hundreds of meters long, quantum but possessing almost no mass.

Quantum Fissure--Fixed point in the space-time continuum, essentially a keyhole into other quantum realities.

Quantum Fluctuations--Phenomenon postulated by physicist Dr. Stephen Hawking. Quantum fluctuations were thought to be links between multiple universes. Hawking referred to them as wormholes.

Quantum Flux--State of dimensional instability, or continual change. Objects in a state of quantum flux are unable to remain stable in one quantum reality.

Quantum Matrix--Energy pattern present in life-forms and objects.

Quantum Phase Inhibitor--Also known as the Tox Uthat, a device invented by 27th century scientist Kal Dano capable of halting all nuclear reaction within a star.

Quantum Signature--A unique characteristic that marks all matter in the universe for a given quantum reality. All matter in each universe resonates at a specific frequency at the quantum level. That signature is constant and cannot be changed by any known process.

Quantum Singularity--Point in spacetime with an infinite small proportion, but with a finite mass. Black holes are stars that are imploded to the format of a singularity. Singularities have an intense gravity field, causing a black hole to suck up all the matter near it. We can consider singularities as a point where normal spacetime and physical laws end. Singularities are used by the Romulans as energy source for their warp drive.

Quartum--Chemical compound used in Starfleet emergency thruster packs. Quartum is normally quite stable, but becomes explosive when exposed to radiation exceeding 350 rads.

Quasars--Mysterious quasi-stellar objects believed to generate enormous amounts of energy from relatively small amounts of mass.

Quasimolecular Flux--Molecular states in which constituent atoms are altered from their normal composition and energy state.

Quatloo--Monetary unit used by the Providers of planet Triskelion for betting on competition between drill thralls.

Radans--Gemstones from planet Troyius.

Radioisotope--Form of chemical elements possessing unstable nucleii that spontaneously emit radiation in the form of alpha particles, beta particles, or gamma rays.

Radioseptics--Small silvery spheres used by the Enaran people of the Delta Quadrant. Persons cleaned and disinfected their hands by rolling the radioseptics around in them.

Rafalian Mouse--Tiny animal.

Rakonian Swamp Rat--Unpleasant animal.

Reactive Ion Impeller--Science project.

Reassociation--In Trill society, after two joined Trill are married, the symbionts are strongly discouraged from maintaining their relationship in later lifetimes when they are joined with subsequent hosts. Such reassociation is considered unnatural, and is such a strict taboo that any Trill engaging in it is exiled from the Trill homworld. When this occurrs, the symbiont is barred from being rejoined to a new host, but instead dies within the body of the exiled host when the host itself dies.

Rectilian Vulture--Avian life-form native to a planet in the Delta Quadrant, known for swooping in on its pray quickly.

Recursion Matrix--Algorithmic construct that forms the cipher key to decrypting a coded data stream.

Red Dwarf--Small, cool star of spectral type M, near the end of its life.

Reeta-hawk--Avian life-form from planet Argratha; a scavenger.

Refrigeration Unit--Heat -pumped device used to freeze living beinggss for later uses such as slaves or for use in medical experiments. This device is only used by beings with low technology.

Regalian Fleaspider--Arachnoid life-form. The venom of fleaspiders can be used to syhthesize a medicine to improve circulation in humanoid patients.

Regulan Blood Worms--Soft and shapeless creatures.

Rodinium--One of the hardest substances known to Federation science. Many Federation outposts' protective shell are constructed of this substance.

Roentgen--Unit of ionizing radiation measure. The quantity of radiation that will produce one electrostatic unit of charge of electricity in one cubic centimeter of air.

Rogue Comet--Essentially a huge ball of ice, which has not been captured by the gravitational influences of any solar system.

Sahsheer--Beautiful crustal-like formations from planet Kelva in the Andromeda Galaxy that form so rapidly they seem to grow.

Saltah'na Energy Spheres--Telepathic receptacles that stored an ancient power struggle that destroyed the Saltah'na race.

Saltzgadum--A substance capable of causing nucleosynthesis in silicon. It is not normally detectable to a starship's internal sensor scans.

Sark, Klingon--An animal similar to a terrestrial horse.

SCM Model 3--Small handheld superconducting magnet used aboard Federation starships.

Sector--In interstellar mapping, a volume of space approximately 20 light-years across. A typical sector in Federation space will contain about 6-10 star systems, although sectors toward the galactic core will often contain many more. The Milky Way galaxy is divided into hundreds of thousands of sectors, grouped into four quadrants. Sectors are usually numbered, although in common usage are often named for a major star or planet located in that sector.

Sector 001--Region that includes the G2-type star known as Sol and the nine planets in its system, including Earth.

Sector 1385--Volume of space in the Alpha Quadrant that contains no known shipping lanes and where in 2351 a micro-wormhole was discovered.

Sector 1607--Location  where the USS Pegasus was lost in 2358.

Sector 19658--Unihabited region outside  Federation space.

Sector 23--Near the Romulan Neutral Zone, the location of Starbase 173.

Sector 2520--Located near the Klingon/Federation border.

Sensors--Generic term for a wide range of scientific, medical, and engineering instruments used aboard Federation starships, starbases and deep space stations and in other applications.

Seofurance--Seofurance fragments from a biological sample container were found by the matter reclamation unit in Ibudan's quarters on DS9.

Separ--Type of gemstone known for its hardness and its sharp facets.

Shape-shift Inhibitor--Device that generates an energy field capable of preventing a shape-shifting being from altering its form.

Shroud--Personnel cloaking technology used by the Jem'Hadar.

Silicon Nodule--Term used by miners on planet Janus VI to describe perfectly round objects found in subterranean caverns on that planet in 2267.

Silithium--Unstable material reactive with verteron particles.

Singularity--Another word for quantumsingularity.

Sirillium--A highly combustible and versatile energy source. Sirillium gas is found in certain types of nebulae. It can be used to boost deflector-shield efficiency and as a warp-plasma catalyst.

Sodium Chloride--Common salt, one of the essential elements of life on Earth and other planets.

Soil Reclamators--Machines used to detoxify top soil, making it suitable for growing crops.

Solanagen--Molecular structure that can only exist in a subspace domain.

Solar Plasma Ejection--Prominence of superheated ionized gas projecting hundreds of millions of kilometers away from the surface of a star.

Sorium--Explosive compound. Sorium is used in Ferengi locator bombs.

Spacetime--The 4 dimensional continuum of which our universe exists. Spacetime has 3 space dimensions (length, size and depth) and one time dimension. Spacetime can be bent, torn, expanded, contracted, dented, etc.

Spatial Interphase--Time-space phenomenon in which two or more dimensional planes briefly overlap and connect.

Spacial Scission--A divergence of subspace fields. Spatial scissions can cause a small region of space, and any matter in it, to be duplicated.

Spawn Beetle--Insectoid life-form.

Spectral Analysis Department--Science department aboard Federation starships, starbases and deep space stations that studies the composition of stars and stellar phenomena.

Spectral Analysis Profile Analysis--Astrophysics study.

Spectral Rupture--Translated Vhnori term for subspace vacuole.

Spican Flame Gem--Pretty but common stone. Can be polished with Antarean glow water.

Sporocystian--Classification of noncorporeal life-forms native to another galaxy. Sporocystian life-forms are believed to exist at least partially in a subspace domain.

Star Streaks--The phenomenon we see of streaks passing by when a ship is at warp. A possible explanation is that we see stars passing by.

Static Warp Bubble--A nonpropulsive toroidal subspace field.

Static Warp Shell (Bubble)--A symmetrical subspace bubble, often toroidal or spherical in three-dimensional profile. A static warp shell cannot be used for warp-propulsion applications because warp drive requires as asymmetrical warp field.

Stellar Cartography--Science department on Federation starships that deals with star mapping.

Stellar Core Fragment--An extremely massive piece of a disintegrated star, probably composed of neutronium.

Strip--Form of Ferengi currency, a fraction of a bar of gold-pressed latinum. (See Miscellaneous section in Database for more info on latinum.)

Sublight--Scientific term describing space-normal speeds (slower than light).

Subnucleonic Radiation--Energetic subatomic particles. Subnucleonic radiation is extremely harmful to organic tissue, as well as to many types of equipment found aboard a Federation starship.

Subspace--Spatial continuum with significantly different properties from our own, a fundamental part of warp drive. Subspace is also used for subspace radio transmissions.

Subspace Barrier--Imaginary line that divides subspace and normal spacetime.

Subspace Compression--Phenomenon resulting from differential fields potential values in nearby portions of the same warp field. Subspace compression can cause different parts of an object to have different inertial densities, resulting in structural strain on the object. In severe cases, subspace compression can tear an object apart at the subatomic level. Depending on relative field symmetries, subspace compression can also cause numerous other, often unpredictable, side effects.

Subspace Field--Forced or natural intrusion of the subspace domain into our own space, altering the behavior of things within our spacetime.

Subspace Field Distortions--Phenomena that generally indicate the presence of a warp propulsion system.

Subspace Funnel--Subspace link between two points in normal space.

Subspace Instabilities--Are of weakness in the fabric of normal space.

Subspace Interphase Pocket--Localized section of space where subspace intrudes into normal space.

Subspace Inversion--Spectacular phenomenon in which subspace near a wormhole becomes fragmented. The Bajoran wormhole undergoes a subspace inversion every 50 years.

Subspace Rift--The extrusion of subspace into  normal space over a discernible event horizon.

Subspace Rupture--Huge swirling anomaly that draws surrounding matter into its central vortex.

Subspace Shock Wave--Powerful energy front generated by a massive energy discharge.

Subspace Transition Rebound--Phenomenon associated with the use of folded-space transport devices.

Subspace Vacuole--Short-lived interspacial passageway. Subspace vacuoles occur naturally on the  Vhnori homeworld.

Superlight Speed--Speed above lightspeed, (186,000 miles per second.)

Supernova--A star that explodes. Only stars that are approx. 3 times heavier than our sun go supernova. Lighter stars go nova.

Tachyon Eddies--Phenomenons of tachyons, which make anything caught in them travel faster than light.

Tachyon Scan--Romulan vessels use tachyon scan sensor technology. A tachyon sweep of a nebula can be used to detect cloaked vessels within.

Tachyons--Particles that travel faster than light.

Talgonite--Ceramic substance, used in the construction of the Kataan probe.

Tallonian Crystals--Much sought-after crystals that are illegal to possess anywhere but on the Tallonian homworld.

Tanium--Material used in starship hulls.

Tectonic Plates--Major subdivisions of the crust of a class-M planet, which meet in seams known as fault lines.

Tekasite--Unstable material.

Tellerium--Material used as an antimatter reaction-rate facilitator in the warp core of Federation starships.

Temporal Anomaly--Rift or hole in the space-time continuum, which allows for passage from one time period to another, or from one parallel reality to another.

Temporal Causality Loop--A disruption in the space-time continuum in which a localized fragment of time is repeated over and over again, ad infinitum.

Temporal Distortion--A disruption in the space-time continuum.

Temporal Disturbance--Discernible area in the space-time continuum where the passage of time within temporal fragments occurs at a different rate than that of surrounding space.

Temporal Explosion--Energic disturbance in the space-time continuum.

Temporal Flux--Phenomenon in which matter passes from one space-time continuum to another. Temporal flux can interfere with the operation of transporters if the object or person to be transported is in a state of temporal flux.

Temporal Reversion--Phenomenon that can occur in proximity to an anti-time anomaly. Exposure can cause living cell structures to revert to earlier forms. In some cases this  has the effect of causing old injuries to heal. This benefit is temporary as prologned exposure causes the cells to coalesce and cease to function.

Terikon Particle Decay--Energy signature used to identify archaelogical artifacts.

Terraforming--In engineering, terraforming refers to any of several very large-scale engineering and biological techniques in which uninhabitable planetary environments can be altered so that a planet can support life. The Federation enforces very strict regulations regarding terraforming, to protect any indigenous life-forms that might be threatened by such projects.

Tertiary Subspace Manifold--Location of the solanagen-based entities in their subspace domain.

Tessipate--Bajoran measurement of land area.

Tetryon--Subatomic particle that can exist only in subspace and is unstable in normal space. A field of tetryons can be produced when a phased ionic pulse comes into contact with a metaphasic shield. Tetryon fields can also occur naturally and can be a hazard to warp-driven craft. The decay of tetryon particles causes an energy phenomenon known as tetryon radiation. Since tetryons can exist only in subspace, the presence of tetryon radiation can be indicative of an intrusion of subspace into normal space, i.e. the formation of a subspace rift. Tetryon plasma emits multiflux gamma radiation, causing it to disrupt subspace. Tetryon radiation in sufficient doses can be lethal to Founders.

Tetryon Field--Contiguous field of subatomic particles produced when a phased ionic pulse comes into contact with a metaphasic shield.

Tetryon Particles--Elementary particles that can only exist in subspace and are unstable in normal space.

Thermal Interferometry Scanner--Device for measuring distances by means of the interference of thermal gradients.

Thermal Inversion Gradient--Atmospheric phenomenon in which a mass of warm air is trapped beneath a layer of cooler air. Thermal inversion gradients can give rise to electrodynamic turbulence.

Thermal Stabilizers--Devices used in artificial planetary atmospheric control systems.

Thermionic Radiation--Hazardous energy form. Thermionic radiation is present in the atmosphere of  Class-Y planets.

Thoron Emissions--Radioactive isotope; a by-product of decaying thorium.

Thoron--Radioactive isotope; a by-product of decaying thorium also known as radon-220.  Can be used to block sensor scans and treat radiation burns.

Thorons--Radioactive particles.

Thought Maker--A small spherical device of Ferengi manufacture designed to control neural activity in a humanoid brain. The thought maker transmits a low-level electromagnetic signal at its victim, enabling it to implant sensory experiences or trigger memories. Illegal in the Federation.

Timeship--Federation vehicle in use in the 29th century, capable of navigating through time using artifically generated temporal rifts.

Timestream--A temporal inversion fold in the space-time matrix, timestreams weave throughout the galaxy and are home to intelligent life-forms.

Titanium--Dark gray metallic element, atomic number 22. Lightweight and very strong, titanium was used extensively in early spacecraft.

Toh-Maire--Volatile pockets of gas in the Chamra Nebula.

Tomographic Imaging Scanner--Sensor scan which involves a series of narrow-beam X-rays to scan objects in a multiphasic mode.

Topaline--Rare mineral needed for colonial life support systems.

Tox Uthat--A quantum inhibitor invented in the 27th century by scientist Kal Dano. The Tox Uthat was a palm-sized crystal capable of halting all nuclear reactions within a star.

Time-Travel Pod--A 26th century craft, five meters in length, composed of plasticized tritanium mesh.

Tractor Beam--A focused linear graviton force beam used to physically manipulate objects across a short distance. Tractor beams are used by Federation starships and other space vehicles as a means of towing other vessels. Tractor beams are also used to provide short-range guidance for approaching or departing shuttlecraft.

Trajector--Advanced technology developed by the people of Sikaris, permitting instantaneous folded-space transport across distances as great as 40,000 light-years.

Transpectral Sensor Array--Instrument that can  theoretically penetrate the plasma storm interference of the Badlands.

Transporter Theory--A class taught at Starfleet Academy.

Transwarp--Form of faster than light travel that is per definition faster than Federation warp technologies. Transwarp propulsion drives are defined as drives that can exceed warp 10, but is better used for drives that are significantly faster than Federation propulsion.

Transwarp Conduit--Artificially created subspace tunnel. Inside the conduit, the normal limitations of subspace travel do not apply.

Triadium--Metallic compound.

Triaxilation--Complex mathematical process. A recursion matrix can be extracted from an encrypted data stream using triaxilation techniques.

Tricorder--Handheld device with a tactical database, used for field measurements. Tricorders can identify things as particles, chemical substances and atmospheric composition. A medical tricorder is identical, but is programmed for medical useage.

Trigemic Vapors--Aerosolized particles of proteins and animo acids. High concentrations can cause severe humanoid skin irritation.

Trilithium--Exotic chemical compound that acts as a powerful nuclear inhibitor. A few kilograms of trilithium, delivered into the heart of a star, can generate a quantum implosion of sufficient force to halt all fusion reactions in the star. The resulting energy release would also destroy any planets in the star's system.

Trilithium Resin--Highly toxic waste by-product created when dilithium is exposed to intense matter/antimatter reactions in a starship's warp engine core. The compound is extremely unstable and is generally regarded as useful only as an explosive.

Trillium--Good traded on planet Organia.

Trillium 323--Mineral substance found on planet Caldonia.

Tri-Magnesite--Chemical that, combined with trevium, can produce an intensely bright light rivaling that of a star.

Trinimbic Interference--Powerful energy disturbance in the upper atmosphere of a Class-L planet. Trinimbic interference can render sensors and transporters ineffective and can cause heavy atmospheric turbulence.

Trinitrogen Chloride--Chemical. Trinitrogen chloride, also known as TNC, is used as a cleaning solution. TNC can also be used in some types of plasma grenades.

Triolic Waves--By-product of an energy source employed by the beings on planet Devidia II. The energy source had deleterious effects on most living tissue, except for life-forms with microcentrum cell membranes.

Trionium--One of the compounds detected by Enterprise-D sensors in nebula FGC-47.

Triptin--Material sometimes used in three-dimensional art.

Trisec--Measurement of time on planet Triskelion.

Tritanium--Material which is a form of tanium. Used in Federation starship hulls. Tritanium is 21.4 times harder than diamond.

Tritium--Isotope of hydrogen with an atomic weight of 3.

Tritonium--Radioactive material. Tritonium isotopes have been used as subdermal tracking implants.

Troposphere--Region of a Class-M planet's atmosphere nearest the surface.

Tryoxene--Naturally-occuring material.

Tsetse Fly--Any of a group of small flies indigenous to the continent of Africa on Earth. The insect is noted for transmitting African sleeping sickness.

t'stayan--A Talarian riding animal. T'stayans possess six hooves and are very powerful animals.

T Tauri-- T Tauri is a very young star, that fluctuates in brightness. It's at a distance of 300 lightyears from Earth.

Turn--English translation of the Klingon term for year, as in one turn (or revolution) of a planet around its sun.

Tuvok Orchid--Species of flowering plant created by Lon Suder late in 2372 using genetic splicing techniques. Suder named the new flower after his mentor, Lieutenant Tuvok.

Tyken's Rift--A rare rupture in the fabric of space, undetectable by most sensors. The Rift effectively drains all energy from any space vehicle unlucky enough to fall into it.

Typhon Expanse--A region of space.

Typhon Sector--Region of Federation space.

Ultraviolet Satellite--Device capable of generating high levels of ultraviolet radiation.

Uncertainty Principle--Concept in quantum mechanics postulated by Earth scientist Dr. Werner Heisenberg in 1927. The uncertainty principle states that increasing the accuracy of the measurement in one observable quantity also increases the uncertainty of knowledge of other quantities in the equation.

Uridium--Unstable mineral substance. Even in its raw form, uridium ore can explode if subjected to a strong electrical charge.

Valo System--A solar system located in neutral space near the Cardassian border. The third moon of Valo I has a composition that makes sensor readings impossible.

Vega IX Probe--A long-range automated Starfleet probe that was sent to record the collapse of Beta Stromgren in 2366.

Vega-Omicron Sector--A sector of space.

Vendarite--Valuable mineral on planet Ligos VII.

Verdions--Particles generated in the cores or surfaces of white dwarf stars.

Verterium Cortenide--Densified composite material composed of polysillicate verterium and monocrystal cortenum. Some Federation warp coils are made of this material.

Verteron--Subatomic particle associated with subspace phenomena. Artificially created verterons allow a vessel on impulse power to pass through the Bajoran wormhole unharmed.

Vertion--Subatomic particle. The only natural source of vertion particles is white dwarf stars.

V-Ger--Contraction for "Voyager". A massive machine life-form built around NASA's ancient Voyager VI space probe. Voyager, which launched from Earth in the late 20th century, had fallen into a black hole and emerged on the other side of the galaxy, near a planet of living machines. The inhabitants of the machine planet found the robot Voyager VI to be a kindred spirit, and gave directive; To learn all that is learnable, and to return that knowledge to its creator. Unfortunately, in doing so, they gave Voyager, now called V-Ger, the ability to destroy the objects being studied. Upon reaching Earth, where V-Ger believed its creator resided, V'Ger joined with Willard Decker and Ilia, and departed for parts unknown.

Victurium Alloy--Metal used in the superstructure of some space vehicles. Transporters are unable to penetrate large amounts of this alloy.

Visual Acuity Transmitter--Small device that permits short-range transmission of visual images recorded by a VISOR.  The image displayed by the Visual Acuity Transmitter would contain an enormous amount of information, but would be diffucult for an untained human to view.

Viterium--Metal alloy. Exposure to delta radiation greatly weakens viterium, which is normally strong and resilient.

Void--Informal name of a vast expance in the Delta Quadrant bereft of any star systems. The Void, whch is home to a civilization of technologically advanced night beings, is over 2,500 light-years across.

Vorilium--Material. Vorilium is utilized in Federation starships.

Vorillium--Raw material.

W-particle Interference--Unusual phenomenon associated with gaps in normal space.

Warp Bubble--An enclosed subspace field.

Warp Field Effect--Cumulative damage to the structure of the subspace continuum caused by repeated exposure of an area exposed to warp travel. Areas with already preexisting subspace instability are particularly sensitive to the effect. As the exposure to warp field energy increases, so does the chance of a subspace rupture. The warp field effect is particularly severe when warp factor 5 is exceeded. Recently advancements in Federation warp drive technology make it possible to employ high warp speeds without causing excessive damage to the subspace continuum.

Weather Modification Net--System used to detect and dissipate dangerous meteorological disturbances in a planetary atmosphere.

Wormhole--Spacetime distortion predicted by general relativity. A wormhole connects far places with each other by a tunnle through hyperspace.

Warp Particles--Subatomic matter created by a warp field. These particles can be used to open a subspace breach in the event horizon of a black hole.

Warp Plasma Particles--Residual amounts of plasma created during a matter/antimatter reaction. It has been determined that discharging a phaser or disruptor weapon in the vicinity of warp plasma particles will cause the particles to ignite. Transporter beams are also known to destabliize the plasma.

Warp Shadows--Energy phenomenon produced under certain conditions by warp-driven starships. Warp shadows have been known to cause sensor ghosts to appear on some types of sensors.

Wormhole--A subspace bridge (or tunnel) between two points in "normal" time and space. Most wormholes are extremely unstable, and their endpoints fluctuate widely across time and space. An improperly balanced warp-drive system can create an artificial wormhole that can pose a serious danger to the ship and its crew.

X-rays--Energetic form of electromagnetic radiation. X-rays were used on Earth in early medical imaging scanners into the late 21st century.

Yominium Sulfide--Chemical compound.

Yonada--Huge asteroid-like starship world which carried the survivors of the Fabrina nova.

Yridium Bicantizine--Chemical compound, an active ingredient in ketracel-white.

Zateri Emerald--A semi-mythical gemstone, reputed to be located in the ruins of Ligilium.

Zee-Magnees Prize--Prestigeous scientific award.

Zenite--Rare mineral substance found on planet Ardana used to combat botanical plagues.
