Aceton Assimilators--Weapon used by the Menthars in their war with the Promellians a thousand years ago. Aceton assimilators could drain power from distanct sources (such as an enemy ship), then use that power to generate deadly radiation to kill the ship's crew.

Advanced Tactical Training--Starfleet curriculum for specialized tactical and intelligence operations. Admission to Advanced Tactical Training required the recommendation of a superior officer. The course load was very difficult, and half of the members of each year's class failed to complete it.

Ahn-woon--Vulcan weapon made of a single leather strip that could be used as a whip or noose.

Alpha Four Seven Authorization--Security code required to access Starfleet subspace secured channels aboard the USS Enterprise-D.

Alpha Search Pattern--Standard Starfleet exploration scheme in which a group is devided into a number of smaller search teams and sent out in specific predetermined directions.

Amanita Muscaria--Poisonous mushroom native to Earth. The Amanita muscaria has a red or orange cap with white patches and if ingested, causes profuse sweating, convulsions, and even death.

Anbo-jytsu--Considered by some to be the ultimate evolution in the martial arts, anbo-jytsu is derived from a number of Earth's Asian forms. The sport involves two opponents striking each other with three-meter-long staffs while blindfolded. A proximity detector at one end of each  staff provides guidance on the opponent's location, while full-body armor protects each playet. Points are scored for contact with the opponent, and for knocking the opponent outside of the playing ring.

Antimatter Mines--Explosive charges used as proximity bombs.

Aphasia Virus--Virus created by Bajoran scientist Dekon Elig, intended to be used as a terrorist weapon against the Cardassians. Once contracted, the virus finds its way to temporal lobes and disrupts normal communication processes, causing a type of aphasia. As the virus spreads, it attacks the autonomic nervous system, causing coma, then death.

Argine--Explosive used in a Ferengi locator bomb.

Argonite--Potentially hazardous substance.

Armory--Weapons storage compartment on board a starship, starbase or deep space station.

Artonian Lasers--Stolen weapons discovered in the Gatherer camp on Gamma Hromi II.

Assay Office--Area on the Promenade of station Deep Space 9 where valuables were assessed and secured. The valuables were protected by a personal authorization code and a verified retinal print using a Cardassian MK-12 scanner.

Asymetric Encryption Circuit--Data-processing component used in a Starfleet security protocol system.

Atomic Bomb--Primitive weapon using explosive nuclear fission reactions in isotopes of uranium and plutonium.

Attack Satellite--Spaceborne weapons system.

Attack Skimmer--Flying assault platform.

Autodestruct--A command program in the main computer system of Federation starships, starbases and deep space stations enabling the destruction of the vessel or facility should it fall into enemy hands. Initiation of this order requires the verbal order (with dermal handprint identification verification) of the two most senior command officers on board. Once the computer has recognized the two officers, the senior officer gives the command to "set autodestruct sequence," whereupon the computer asks the other officer for verbal concurrence.

Autonomic Response Analysis--Test of involuntary physiologic parameters used in law enforcement to evaluate the truthfulness of a witness. Autonomic response analysis works by comparing the subject's readings with a baseline reading for another member of the subject's species.

Auto-Phaser Interlock--A computer control subroutine that allows for precise timing in the firing of ship-mounted phasers.

B'Zal--Ferengi signal code that uses alternating patterns of light and dark to transmit simple text messages.

BaH--Klingon term for "fire", as in to fire weapons.

Bajoran Military Academy--Armed forces institute on planet Bajor.

Bajoran Militia--The armed service of the Bajoran provisional government.

Baldric--Traditional Klingon warrior's sash, often adorned with symbols of the warrior's House, or with other medals of valor.

Barrica--Site of a Cardassian base  on planet Setlik III during the conflict with the Federation in 2347.

Bat'Telh--The traditional Klingon "sword of honor", resembling a meter-long two-ended scimitar. The bat'telh is carried along the inside of the arm and controlled by two handholds located on the outside edge of the weapon.

Battle Bridge--Secondary control center on Federation starships from which battle operations can be controlled. Located in the stardrive section of the starship.

Battle Section--Alternate term for stardrive section of a Federation starship.

Bekk--An enlisted rank of the Klingon Defense Force.

Benthan Guard--Security organizaton charged with maintaining order within the Benthan solar system.

Bio-dart--Natural biological defense system of the Voth people in the Delta Quadrant. The Voth are able to shoot small darts from special orifices on their forearms. The darts deliver a fast-acting chemical that can temporarily render another individual unconscious.

Biogenic Weapon--Extremely deadly biological armament, illegal under interstellar treaties. The components necessary to create biogenic weapons include biomimetic gel, retroviral vaccines, isomiotic hypos, and plasma flares.

Biomechanical Gene Disrupter--Deadly nanobiogenic weapon used by both the T'Lani and the Kellerun during a war that lasted for centuries. Also known as harvesters.

Blast Shutters--Protective view port covers used on Starfleet ships such as runabouts. Blast shutters can be lowered in place to prevent damage from external objects or other hazards.

Boridium Pellet--Small object planted subcutaneously by Romulan security forces into prisoners, enabling such prisoners to be located by use of the pellet's energy signature.

Brig--Security detention area, used to detain individuals believed to have committed serious criminal offenses or for individuals believed to pose a serious danger to other people or to a ship itself. Secure entrance to starship brigs is often provided by a forcefield door.

British Intelligence--Security agency for the nation-state of Great Britain during the 20th century.

Cabrodine--Common chemical explosive.

Camouflage Field--Technological device that can generate false sensor readings. Camouflage fields are used to mask the signatures of contraband materials when scanned by cargo inspectors. Illegal in the Federation.

Cardassian Intelligence Bureau--Organization that replaced the Obsidian Order as the chief information gathering service for the Cardassian government under Gul Dukat during the Dominion alliance.

Cardassian Phase-disruptor Rifle--Standard issue Cardassian field weapon. The Cardassian phase-disruptor rifle has a 4.7 megajoule power capacity, three millisecond recharge and two beam settings.

Cascade Virus--Sophisticated computer software weapon.  The virus affects all of the computer memory cores aboard a starship or station.

Chromoelectric Force Field--Protective energy shield.

Chroniton Torpedo--Torpedo used by the Delta Quadrant race called the Krenim, in a possible or alternative timeline. Chroniton torpedos are charged with chronitons which makes the torpedo out of phase with normal spacetime, so they can penetrate shielding. This state is called temporal flux. Chroniton torpedos are not as destructive as quantum torpedos or tri-cobalt torpedos, but are perfect to use for precision attacks.

Class-5 Probe--Medium-range reconnaissance probe, equipped with passive sensors and recording systems.

Class-5 Intelligence Drone--Small automated sensor platform. Starfleet often uses class-5 drones to monitor spacecraft activity in remote regions without the need to deploy starship assets.

Cloaking Device--An energy screen generator used to render an object (typically, a space vehicle) invisible to the eye and to most sensor systems. Most cloaking devices require so much power that a vessel so equipped cannot use weapons systems without decloaking.

Cloaking Device, Aldean--An immensely powerful forcefield that effectively rendered the enitre planet of Aldea invisible from space, eventually causing depletion of their ozone layer, damaging those living there.

Cloaking Device, Klingon--The Klingons apparently obtained basic cloaking technology from the Romulans around 2268. Many Klingon ships, including their Birds-of-Prey are equipped with these cloaking devices.

Cloaking, Device, Romulan--The first known example of a practical cloaking device was on a Romulan War Bird that crossed the Romulan Neutral Zone in 2266. By 2268, this device was improved.

Cobalt Diselenide--Biochemical substance used as a biogenic weapon. A nerve agent deadly to Cardassians, but harmless to many other humanoids. Cobalt Diselenide is very unstable and requires refrigerated storage.

Cobalt-thorium Device--Weapon.

Code 1 Emergency--Federation signal for a total disaster, requiring an immediate response.

Code 1--Starfleet designation for a declaration of war.

Code 2--Starfleet encryption protocol that the Romulans had broken as of 2267.

Code 47--Term designating a Starfleet subspace communique of extremely hgh sensitivity or secrecy. Code 47 messages are intended only for the eyes of a captain and voiceprint identification is required. Further, no computer records are maintained of Code 47 transmissions.

Code 710--Interstellar code prohibiting a spacecraft from approaching a planet.

Code Factor 1--Starfleet code meaning invasion status.

Code One Alpha Zero--Signal indicating the discovery of space vehicle in distress.

Coded Transponder Frequency--A specific subspace frequency and code that activated a starship's transponder to send back its identifying code, permitting allied vessels and authorities to accurately track the ship.

Collar of Obedience--Neck bands worn by the drill thralls on planet Triskelion that tightened when the thrall disobeyed an order. Each collar was coded with a color that signified which Provider owned that particular drill thrall.

Colt Firearms--Nineteenth-century Earth weapons manufacturing company, founded in 1847 by Samauel Colt. The company was famous for handheld firearms, including the double-action cavalry pistol discovered in 2368 in a cavern on Earth.

Compressed Teryon Beam--Weapon used by the Lenarians.

Counterinsurgency Program--Security program installed into the computer system on station Terok Nor while the facility was still a Cardassian station. The counterinsurgency program was deisgned to activate automatically in case of a revolt by the station's Bajoran ore processing workers. It broadcase throughout the station a series of recorded visual messages of Gul Dukat entreating rebellious workers to surrender or face a series of escalating consequences, up to the destruction of the station.

Cranial Implant--Highly classified Cardassian biotechnological device used by the Obsidian Order. The implants, which were placed into the skulls of the order's operatives, were designed to stimulate the pleasure centers of the brain. This would release large quantities of endorphins, making the operative impervious to pain in the event the operative were tortured by an enemy. This device was never designed for continuous operation for any length of time less it fail and begin causing extreme pain to it's user.

CRM 114--Large portable hand cannon made by the Breen. The CRM-114 was designed to destroy moving vessels and surface emplacements, and was guaranteed to cut through reactive armor in the 6 to 15 centimeter range. It could also penetrate shields up to 4.6 gigajoules in strength.

Cryostatic Suspension--A method of suspended animation used to punish criminals on the Nekrit Supply Depot station in the Delta Quadrant.

Defender--Soldier in the Vori military in their war against the Kradin.

D'k tahg--A Klingon knife.

Dispersion Field--Energetic flux used to prevent the function of a transporter beam into a specific area.

Disruptor Pistol--A Klingon weapon, more compact version of the disruptor rifle.

Disruptor Pistol (old style)--A Klingon sonic disruptor pistol.

Disruptor Rifle--A Klingon phase-disruptor energy weapon.

Disruptor, System 5--Large rifle-like weapon used on spacestations which requires lots of energy to fire. Not a good combat weapon.

Dynamite--Chemical explosive developed on Earth by 19th century scientist Alfred Nobel. Although intended by Nobel for industrial and construction applications, dynamite was used as a deadly weapon of war.

E-band Emissions--Electromagnetic signals sometimes emitted by collapsing protostars.

Echo Displacement--Tactical deception technique using a starship's deflector grid to project false sensor readings to convince an enemy that other spacecraft are present.

Echo Papa 607--An automated weapons drone created by the now-dead arms merchants of planet Minos. The 607 was designed to be effective against ground personnel as well as deep-space vehicles and could also be programmed for information gathering.

Elgol-red--Message encryption protocol used by the Cardassians.

Eliminator--In Ferengi society, an individual who earns his living by murdering people in exchange for payment. Eliminators are generally regarded by some as being psychopathic.

Emergency Procedure Alpha 2--Emergency protocol used aboard Federation starships. Alpha 2 disengaged all shipboard computer control and placed ship's systems on manual override.

Emitter Stage--Component of a Federation phaser weapon.

Encryption Lockout--Computer security protocol intended to prevent unauthorized access to sensitive information.

Evasive Pattern--Any of numerous Starfleet tactical maneuvers used to avoid enemy attack in combat situations. Evasive patterns are usually designated by a combination of Greek letters and numbers.

Federation Penal Settlement--Institution located in New Zealand on Earth where criminals are rehabilitated.

Ferengi Whip--Handheld Ferengi weapon used to fire high energy plasma discharges at a target.

Fireboxes--Term used by the inhabitants of planet Omega IV to describe Starfleet phasers.

First Order--Cardassian military division.

Flintlock--Primitive, muzzle-loading weapon that used an explosive charge to propel a small projectile.

Foil--Ancient weapon used in the Earth sport of fencing, it has a flexible, rectangular blade about one meter in length and a bell guard to protect the hand.

Forced Neutrino Inverter--Explosive device.

Forced Plasma Beam--Destructive energy source used in Borg and Ferengi handheld weapons.

Fourth Order--Cardassian military division.

Fractal Encryption--Very sophisticated, virtually unbreakable computer encryption technique.

Fusion Bombs--Weapons developed by many techologically advancing cultures.

Fuurinkazan Battle Strategies--Tactics developed by Kyle Riker at the Tokyo Base prior to his work for Starfleet as a tactical advisor.

Galen Border Conflicts--A series of skirmishes during the 2350s between the Talarians and the Federation over the Galen system, in which Federation colonies had been established.

Gamma--Colloquial term used by the Jem'Hadar to refer to Jem'Hadar soldiers bred in the Gamma Quadrant. The term was coined to distinguish them from Alphas, who were bred in the Alpha Quadrant. All Jem'Hadar before 2374 were necessarily Gammas.

Glavin--A traditional weapon on planet Ligon II, used in ritual combat. Resembling a gauntlet-length oversized glove, the end of the glavin has a large, vicious hook and is covered with poison-tipped spines.

Gravimetric Torpedo--Sophisticated energy weapon.

Gravitic Mine--Free-floating weapon used against space vehicles.

Gravitic Sensor Net--Network of detection devices employed by the Federation near the Romulan Neutral Zone, making it possible to detect space vehicles in the area.

Gunpowder--Explosive mixture created by combining sulfur, saltpeter and charcoal, used in ancient projectile weapons.

Harvesters--Deadly nanobiogenic weapon used during the centuries-long war between the T'Lani and Kellerun. Harvesters, which virtually wiped out the population of planet T'Lani III, were clear cylinders containing about two liters of lethal orange gel. All were destroyed after the war.

Hathon--Location of a weapons depot commanded by Gul Pirak during the Cardassian occupation of Bajor.

Heater--Slang term on planet Sigma Iotia II for firearms. The Iotians referred to a Starfleet phaser as a "fancy heater".

Heavy Graviton Beam--A directed energy weapon considered for possible use against the Borg during the Borg offensive of 2367.

High Energy X-ray Laser--A ship-mounted weapon in use aboard Talarian warships in 2367.

Hopper--Troop-carrying small craft.

Hunter Probe--Automated weapon. A hunter probe can be programmed only to attack a specific target.

Hyperthermic Charge--Explosives technology used by the Vidiians in the Delta Quadrant. Hyperthermic charges release great amounts of heat upon detonation.

Iconian Computer Weapon--A computer software weapon employed by the ancient Iconians. The weapon, a destructive computer program, was delivered to an enemy spacecraft by means of a transmitter in a short-range space probe. The program would then alter the target vessel's computer software, causing failure of critical systems.

Infernite--Common chemical explosive.

Intelligence Officer--Starfleet billet.

Interferometric Dispersion--Technique that renders a spacecraft undetectable by primitive radar detection systems.

Interferometric Pulse--Energy discharge that is modulated in opposition to a particular energy field. Interferometric pulses can be used to cancel out and render ineffective an enemy ship's deflector shields.

Instrument of Obedience--Small electronic device implanted subcutaneously in the temporal area of the brain in all citizens of the asteroid/ship Yonada as a means of controlling their behaviror. The device would emit a strong pain stimulus. If strong enough, this would cause death.

Interphase Cloaking Device--Device that allows travel through solid matter and high energetic energy fields. A molecular phase inverter moves the ship out of phase with the spacetime continuum. An anyon emitter returns the ship back to our reality.

Interphase Generator--Experimental Romulan cloaking technology that combined a molecular phase inverter with a cloaking device. Matter exposed to the interphase generator would partially exist on a parallel spatial plane and would therefore be undetectable to any known sensing device. Matter so cloaked would theoretically even be able to pass through other matter.

Invasive Program--Computer software weapon designed by Starship Enterprise-D personnel in 2268 for the purpose of destroying the Borg collective consciousness. The program was a paradoxical geometric construct which, when introduced into the Borg system, was expected to form a recursively insoluble puzzle which would destroy the Borg system.

Isokinetic Cannon--Weapon capable of penetrating shields of heavily armored vessels.

Isolation Protocol--A series of emergency procedures employed aboard Federation starships in the event of a hull breach in part of the ship. Isolation protocol procedures include computer-controlled closure of emergency bulkheads in the turboshafts to prevent uncontrolled atmospheric loss.

Isolation Suit--Starfleet garment equipped with a cloaking device, rendering the wearer unobservable. Isolation suits are used by Federation scientists for covert sociological studies.

Isolinear Tag--Tiny transponder device permitting a tracking system to locate an object to which a tag has been attached.

Isolytic Subspace Weapon--Weapon of mass destruction. Isolytic subspace weapons are highly unpredictable and can cause dangerous tears in the subspace fabric.

Isomagnetic Disintegrator--Large shoulder-mounted directed-energy weapon used by the Federation.

kar'takin--Short polearm with cleaverlike blades along one side. The kar'takin was a favored weapon of Jem'Hadar soldiers.

Kaylo--Yellow fruit, resembling an Earth apple, native to a planet in the Delta Quadrant. It is highly poisonous to humanoids; one bite of a kaylo results in choking, then painful death.

Kellicam--Unit of distance measure in use by the Klingon Empire. One kellicam is roughly equal to two kilometers.

Kinetic Detonator--Old-style warhead fusing mechanism used by the Cardassians as late as 2369.

Kligat--Three-sided bladed weapon used by tribal warriors on planet Capella IV.

Klingon Defense Force--Military service of the Klingon Empire. The KDF is responsible for defending the Empire's borders against enemies and for operating the Empire's space fleet.

Krenim Temporal Weapon Ship--In an alternate timeline, an incredibly powerful weapon of mass destruction. The ship created a focused temporal shock wave that actually removed an object from the continuum. Not only did the object disappear from history, but all effects of that object throughout the timeline also vanished. The ship operated in a state of temporal flux, outside normal space-time, so that it was immune not only to the effects of its temporal shock waves, but it was also impervious to most forms of attack.

Kumeh Maneuver--Combat tactic in which one sublight space vehicle maneuvers behind a planet to avoid detection by another.

Kut'luch--A bladed weapon used by Klingon assassins. The kut'luch had a serrated blade and made a very serious wound.

Kuttars--Type of bayonet.

Laser Weapons--Energy weapon used aboard early Federation starships. ("Laser" was originally an acronym for Light Amplification by Stimulated Emission of Radiation.) These took the form of pistol sidearms, as well as larger artillery-sized cannons.

Level-2 Security Alert--Starfleet security protocol. It was enacted when hostile intrusion inside the ship might be expected. During a level-2 alert, armed security officers were stationed on every deck.

Level-1 Personnel Sweep--Scan protocol on deep space stations and starbases initiated to locate any personnel in an area of the station.

Locator Bomb--Sophisticated antipersonnel weapon capable of seeking out a specific person and detonating a sorium argine explosive to kill the target. The locator bomb uses sensors designed to lock on to the target's pheromones.

Machine Gun--Antipersonnel firearm used during the 20th century on planet Earth. A machine gun employed chemical explosive cartridges to propel a number of sublight projectiles fired in rapid succession at a target, often to deadly effect.

Mari Constabulary--Law-enforcement agency of the Mari society in the Delta Quadrant.

Mars Defense Perimeter--A Starfleet defense border designed to protect the inner Solar System. The Mars Defense Perimeter was guarded by unmanned pods capable of tracking and destroying intruding enemy space vehicles.

Masking Circuitry--Device employed by some ships of the Kazon-Nistrim sect in the Delta Quadrant. The masking circuitry made such ships difficult to detect using sensors. Such vessels could be renedered briefly visible when illuminated by a polaron burst.

Mek'leth--Klingon sword approximately half as long as the bat'leth.

Meldrar I--Planet. A penal facility is located on the moon of Meldrar I.

Merculite Rockets--Obsolete weapons system found in older spacecraft.

Metryon Cascade--Deadly weapon used by the Haakonians, a Delta Quadrant species, that killed many of the inhabitants of the Talaxian moon Rhinax. Many survivors now suffer from a deadly blood disease called metrymia.

Mevak--Klingon dagger used in such ceremonies as the Mauk-to'Vor ritual.

Mind Sifter--Ancient Klingon device used to empty a brain of valuable information. Its side effects include brain damage.

Mines, Self-Replicating-- Small but capable devices that incorporate a networked replicator unit and a matter-antimatter warhead.

Mishiama Wristlock--Martial-arts technique.

MK-12 Scanner--Cardassian security device used to verify the identify of those storing valuables at the assay office on the Promenade of station Deep Space 9.

Mok'bara--Ritual Klingon martial-arts form, resembling terrestrial tai chi. The exercises are designed to enhance one's ability in hand-to-hand combat.

Molecular-Decay Detonator--A technology used exclusively in Romulan weapons.

Multikinetic Neutronic Mine--Borg weapon with an explosive yield of five million isotons.

Multivector Assault Mode--Tactical capability built into the experimental Federation starship USS Prometheus, giving the vessel the capability of separating into three distinct spacecraft. Each section was capable of independent operation with full weapons and navigational capability.

Mutagenic Retrovirus--Deadly biological weapon.

Nanobiogenic Weapon--Biological weapon of mass destruction used in the war between the T'Lani and the Kellerun.

Navigational Deflector--On many Federation starships, a powerful forward-looking directional deflector used to push aside debris, meteoroids and other objects that might collide with the ship. Can be modified to use as a weapon.

Ninth Order--Cardassian military division.

Nucleonic Charge--Hirogen explosive weapon.

Neuroelectric Weapon--Device that incapacitates a person by sending a severe energy shock pulse into the nervous system.

Neural Servo--Electronic device implanted on the nuchal surface of each member of Arctus Baran's crew of mercenaries, used for crew discipline. The device was directly connected to the wearer's nervous system and was controlled by a transponder worn by Baran.

Neutral Particle Weapons--Ship-mounted weapons in use aboard Talarian warships.

Neutral Zone Outposts--A series of Federation monitoring facilities located on the border of the Romulan Neutral Zone.

Neutral Zone, Klingon--A no-man's land between the United Federation of Planets and the Klingon Empire. Passage into the zone by ships of either nation was forbidden by treaty. The Klingon Neutral Zone was abolished in 2293 by the accords of the Khitomer Conference.

Neutral Zone, Romulan--A region of space approximately one light year across, dividing the Romulan Star Empire from the Federation. The Neutral Zone was established around 2160 after a conflict between Earth and the Romulans.

Neutralization Emitters--Component of Cardassian security force-field systems. These systems are much like Starfleet containment fields except that Cardassian neutralization emitters are lethal.

Neutronic Mine--Borg weapon. It spreads neutrons over a distance of at least 5 lightyears Explosive force is 5 times greater than a quantum torpedo, and 25,000 times of a photon torpedo.

Nisroh--Curved blade used on planet Tilonus IV.

Nitrilin--Extremely unstable and rare substance often used in microexplosives.

Nogatch Hemlock--Substance poisonous to humans. In 2372 there was no known cure for Nogatch hemlock poisoning.

N'yengoren Strategy--Klingon attack tactic used against a fortified ground-based stronghold.

Obsidian Order--The ruthless and frighteningly efficient Cardassian internal security police. The Obsidian Order maintained an elaborate network that kept virtually every Cardassian citizen under surveillance.

Ogat Training Academy--School where Klingon youths learn the warrior disciplines.

Operation Retrieve--Code name for a proposed military strike operation.

Orbital Weapons Platform--Cardassian unmanned weapons platform, set in space and equipped with 1000 plasma torpedoes whose hulls are protected by regenerative forcefields.

Orion Syndicate--Powerful criminal organization based in the Alpha Quadrant. Members are known to take their own lives before being compelled to testify against the syndicate. There is a substantial membership fee.

Painstik, Klingon--Electronic "cattle prod" used as part of the Klingon Age of Ascension ritual. Can cause serious damage or even death when applied to a humanoid for more than a few seconds at a time.

Paralysis Field--Weapon used by the Kelvans. The weapon blocked nerve impulses to the voluntary muscles.

Phased Ion Cannon--Energy weapon employing electrically charged beams.

Phase 1 Search--Standard Starfleet procedure for a painstaking search aboard a ship, starbase or deep space station, for an individual presumed injured and unable to respond.

Phaser--Acronym for PHASed Energy Rectification, a directed energy weapon used by the Federation Starfleet and others.

Phaser Array Power Cell--Disposable component of a starship's phaser array. These power cells are cylindrical and about a meter in length.

Phaser Cannon--Weapon used in Defiant-class starships. A phaser cannon takes a large amount of phased matter from usually warp or impulse engines.

Phaser Power Coupling--Weapons power transfer conduit, part of the electroplasma system on Federation starships.

Phaser Range--Training and recreation facility aboard a starship, starbase and deep space station. A dark chamber in whch holographic targets appear at random in the distance.

Phaser Rifle--Large handheld energy weapon used by Starfleet personnel.

Phaser Type-1--Small handheld weapon used by Starfleet personnel, circa 2266, who preferred not to appear conspicuously armed. Like all such weapons, phaser type-1 could be adjusted to a variety of settings including stun, heat, and disruption. Phaser 1 is also known as a "hand phaser". Not as powerful as a type-2 phaser.

Phaser Type-2--Pistol type weapon that was used by Starfleet personnel, circa 2266. Significantly more powerful than the tiny phaser type-1, the phaser pistol actually incorporated the phaser 1 into its design.

Phaser Type-3--Handheld rifle weapon. Extremely powerful, seldom necessary on Starfleet missions due to the power of the smaller type 1 and type 2 phasers. Also known as "phaser rifle".

Phaser Type 4--Medium-sized phaser emitter device, mountable on small vehicles such as shuttlecraft, although not part of most shuttles' standard equipment.

Phaser Type 8--Ship-mounted phaser emitter device.

Phasing Cloak--Invisibility-screen generator that is designed not only to disguise a starship from visual and sensor detection, but also to alter the atomic structure of the ship, so that the ship can pass through normal matter. The cloak eventually proved itself in practical use, but the Federation was forbidden from using it by the terms of the Treaty of Algeron.

Pheromonic Sensor--Instrument sensitive to pheromones. Pheromonic sensors can be set to be triggered when a person of a particular species gets within range, and were a favored tool of Flaxian assassins.

Photon Grenades--Short-range, variable-yield energy weapon that creates a powerful electromagnetic pulse. At lower levels, capable of stunning humanoid life-forms in an enclosed area.

Photon Torpedo--Tactical weapon used by Federation starships. Photon torpedoes are self-propelled missiles containing a small quantity of matter and antimatter bound together in a magnetic bottle, launched at warp speed at a target.

Photonic Missile--Weapon of Borg design.

Picard Maneuver--A tactic devised by Captain Jean-Luc Picard aboard the USS Stargazer during the Battle of Maxia in 2355. The Stargazer accelerated to warp speed and for an instant appeared to be in two places at once to a distant observer, the opponent vessel. This maneuver, taking advantage of the fact that the opponent vessel was using only light-speed sensors, allowed the Federation starship to fire and damage their enemy. The Picard Maneuver is required study at Starfleet Academy.

Pistol--Handheld weapon that used a small chemical explosive to propel a metal pellet.

Pistol, Romulan--Directed-energy weapon used by Romulans, Klingons, and other races. Romulan disruptor fire can be identified by a high residue of antiprotons and can linger for several hours after the weapon has been used.

Planet Killer--Automated spacegoing weapon from outside our galaxy that entered Federation space in 2267, destroying the planets in star systems L-370 and L-374. Several kilometers in length, with a hull composed of pure neutronium, it smashed planets into rubble, and used the matter as fuel.

Plasma Charge--Explosive device.

Plasma Torpedo--The most destructive type of torpedo which is charged with an amount of plasma. The destructive power is mainly because of the high temperature of plasma.

Plasma Weapons--Armament technology, developed sometime after 2293.

Polarization Cloak--Invisibility screen used by Ramuran officials to prevent detection of spacecraft or personnel. A polarization cloak can be disrupted by use of a magneton sweep.

Police Special--Ancient Earth hand weapon that fired lead bullets propelled by expanding gasses.

Prefire Chamber--Component of a Federation phaser weapon.

Prefix Code--In a Federation starship's computer systems, the prefix code was a security passcode appended to computer commands to prevent unauthorized activation or control of key systems.

Presidio--Ancient fort located in the San Francisco Bay area on Earth, it was a military installation well into the 20th century.

Primary Security Net--Part of a starship's security system which prevents unauthorized tampering.

Progressive Encryption Lock--Multilayered set of security codes used by the Romulan information net.

Proton Weapon--Energetic charged-particle armament. Ramuran starships employ tightly focused proton-based beam weapons.

Proximity Transceiver--Borg device that permits the collective to locate a drone if it becomes separated from the collective. A drone's proximity transceiver is activated in the presence of another drone.

Proxcinian War--Armed conflict undertaken by the Proxicinians in 2373.

Proximity Detector--A two-centimeter-square, jewel-like magnetic device that was implanted into a humanoid body, making it easy to accurately track and identify that individual.

Psionic Resonator--Ancient Vulcan weapon that focuses and amplifies telepathic energy, enabling its user to kill with a thought. The resonator, known in Vulcan mythology as the Stone of Gol, is believed to be one of the most devastating weapons ever conceived.

Psi-wave Device--Device used by the Prytt Security Ministry to gain direct access to the minds of people they wished to interrogate. The devices are implanted directly into the victim's cerebral cortex, and require a passage of time to be tuned to the individual's psi-wave pattern.

Psychographic Profile--Detailed files maintained by the Vorta on potential adversaries. Such profiles could be surprisingly detailed and included much personal information.

Psychotropic Drug--Any of a variety of pharmaceuticals intended to alter the psychological behavior of a ptient.

Pulsatel Lockseal--High security locking mechanism.

Pulse Cannon--Other name for a phaser cannon.

Pulse Compression Wave--Energy burst that could be channeled through a phaser bank, thereby increasing the destructive power of a phaser blast.

Pulse Gun--Type of directed-energy weapon used by Akritirian patrollers.

Pulse-Wave Torpedo--Explosive device used by a Vulcan spaceship in a futile attempt to repair a subspace rupture in 2169.

Punishment Zones--In Edo society on planet Rubicun III, a randomly selected are in which mediators (law officials) enforce local laws. Violation of any law in a punishment zone would exact a death penalty.

Purification Squad--Tema of expert assassians sent out by the Palamarian Freedom Brigade.

Quad-Cobalt Torpedo--Torpedo charged with quad-cobalt, far more destructive than photon torpedos and more destructive than tri-cobalt torpedos.

Quantum Torpedo--Very destructive torpedo. Its energy is released from interacting with quantumfilaments. A quantumtorpedo is approx. 5000 times more destructive as a photon torpedo.

Ramuran Tracer Ship--Small, heavily armed warp-capable spacecraft used by tracer units of the secretive Ramuran government. Tracer ships employ polarization cloaks and proton-based particle beam weapons.

Rapid Nadion Pulse--A burst of subatomic nadion particles that facilitate a release of energy from the emitter crystal in a phaser.

Reactive Armor--Type of armor that actively deflects energy and projectiles, sometimes by exploding outward in such a way as to deflect the incoming projectile.

Reconnaissance Probes--Probes used to detect long range ships. Used primarily by spacestations and planets. Mostly used during wartime.

Recursive Encryption Algorithm--Method of message encryption used in most codes employed by the Cardassians.

Remat Detonator--Weapon programmed to scramble a transporter beam during materialization. Remat detonators can be as small as two cubic millimeters in size and can be hidden in clothing or even injected under the skin. Typically used by the Romulans, they are also sold on the black market.

Resonant Particle Wave--Energy-dampening emission used by the Delta Quadrant civilization known as the Swarm. The resonant particle wave causes warp fields to collapse, rendering warp propulsion inoperative.

Scorcher--Energy weapon.

Security Clearance 5--A high level of authorization needed to access restricted functions aboard Federation starships, starbases and deep space stations.

Security Clearance 7--Level of clearance needed to access the location of weapons stored on Federation deep space stations, starbases and starships.

Security Access Code--Password used by Starfleet personnel to provide positive identification when requesting restricted computer functions.

Security Anklet--Device used by Starfleet authorities to track the whereabouts of a criminal or other prisoner. Worn around the ankle of a humanoid prisoner, the anklet contains a transponder and cannot be removed, except by authorized personnel.

Security Bypass Module--Small electronic component used to circumvent security restrictions in computer-controlled devices.

Security Field Subsystem ANA--Computer program devised by Neela, but classified under Chief O'Brien's name, intended to bypass the security defenses on Deep Space 9.

Security Sensor--Used on Deep Space 9 to screen for weapons. It sounded an alarm when exiting the airlocks and entering the interior of the station.

Self-destruct Sequence--Command program in the main computer system of Cardassian station Terok Nor enabling the destruction of the station should it fall into non-Cardassian hands.

Self-replicating Mine--Free-floating explosive device incorporating a replicator subsystem.  A field of self-replicating mines is extremely difficult to deactivate because any mines that are destroyed would immediately be replaced by duplicates.

Sentry--A tightly confined annular forcefield that was discovered on the moon Lambda Paz in the Pentarus star system. The sentry surrounded a water fountain in a cave on that desert planet, serving to protect that valuable resource.

Seventh Tactical Wing--Fleet of Federation starships commanded by Captain Bennet. The Seventh Tactical Wing was formed in 2374 to fight in the war against the Dominion.

Shape-shift Inhibitor--Device that generates an energy field capable of preventing a shape-shifting being from altering its form.

Shields--Energy field used to protect starships and other vessels from harm resulting from natural hazards or enemy attack. Also referred to as deflectors, deflector shields, or screens.

Shield Inverters--A subsystem of Federation starship defensive shield arrays.

Ship Recognition Protocols--Codified system of superstructure landmarks for rapidly identifying starships.

Shroud--Personnel cloaking technology used by the Jem'Hadar.

S.I.D.--Abbreviation for ship in distress.

Skimmer--Military vehicle used by the Cardassian military during the occupation of Bajor.

Singha Refugee Camp--Internment facility for Bajoran nationals during the Cardassian occupation of Bajor.

Sixth Order--Division of the Cardassian military.

Sonic Disruptor--Handheld weapon used by civil authorities on planet Eminiar VII.

Sorium--Explosive compound. Sorium is used in Ferengi locator bombs.

SOS--Radio code signal for distress used on Earth in the 20th century to communicate a request for assistance. The letters SOS were encoded in an ancient telegraphy protocol known as Morse code.

Spread Pattern Delta Nine Four--Experimental photon-torpedo firing pattern that was tested aboard the Enterprise-D in 2370. The test had less than spectacular results.

Starfleet Intelligence--Branch of the Starfleet tasked with keeping the Federation Council and Starfleet Command informed of activities by alien powers affecting the interests of the United Federation of Planets. Perhaps the least-known part of Starfleet Intelligence is the Section 31 covert intelligence unit, which operates independently, without direct executive oversight, to identify and neutralize serious threats to the Federation.

Starfleet Monitor Stations--Outposts located on the Federation border.

Straleb Security Ship--Vessel operated by the Straleb government.

Strategema--Challening holographic game of strategy and wills. Played by two contestants, the game involves manipulating circular icons on a three-dimensional grid to gain control of one's opponent's territory while defending your own.

Strategic Operations Officer--Senior staff position on Federation space stations.

Stratospheric Torpedoes--Starship-launched weapon designed to explode in a planet's atmosphere.

Structural Breach--Break or hole in the hull of a starship.

Stunstick--A meter-long, rodlike weapon that was used by cadre forces fighting for control of the Turkana IV colony. The weapon was capable of delivering a powerful electrical shock to an opponent.

Subatomic Disruptor--Offensive weapon employed by the 29th century Timeship Aeon. Subatomic disruptors cause the moecular structure of the target to come apart.

Subcutaneous Transponder--Small device inserted under the skin and used by Starfleet to track an individual.

Subhadar--A rank in the Angosian military.

Subspace Proximity Detonator--Triggering mechanism employed by small explosive devices used in the Koinonian war a thousand years ago.

Tachyon Detection Grid--Technique devised by Geordi La Forge using a network of active tachyon beams to detect cloaked Romulan ships passing through the net.

Tal-shaya--Ancient method of execution on Vulcan that was considered a merciful form of death. Pressure was applied to a specific portion of the victim's neck until it snapped, causing instantaneous death.

Tantulus Field--Covert murder weapon used by the alternative Captain Kirk in the mirror universe aboard the ISS Enterprise.

Tarahong Detention Center--Institution for prisoners.

Targeting Scanner--Sensor visual display device used for tactical applications.

Telekinetic Suppression Collar--Device used to inhibit the telekinetic ability of a telepath.

Temporal Pulse Plasma Disruptor--Weapon introduced by the Psilons, a Delta Quadrant species. Its technology is centuries ahead of Federation, Klingon, Romulan, Jem'Hadar, and even Borg technology. It uses the same principle as a phaser cannon but with extreme advancements. All Psilon ships are equipped with this device.

Tentalus V--Penal colony administered by Dr. Simon Van Gelder in 2266. Tantalus V was located on a distant planet and protected by a force field, preventing transporter use or other possible escape. Considerably advanced beyond early prisons, Tantalus V was more of a hospital for sick minds. One treatement developed there, a neural neutralizer, was found to have deadly effects on its patients.

Terawat Power Particle Beam Rifle--Powerful energy weapon.

Termination Implant--Small device inserted into the brain stems that allows a humanoid to commit suicide in the event they were ever captured by an enemy. Can be triggered physically, resulting in a painful death within minutes. Triggered mentally, it results in death within minutes without pain.

Tetralubisol--A highly volatile liquid lubricant used aboard starships. Can be used as a poison.

Tetryon Pulse Launcher--Powerful weapon used by the Federation.

Thalmerite--Powerful chemical explosive compound.

Thalmerite Device--Explosive used to destroy the Klingon Bird-of-Prey Toh'Kaht.

Thought Maker--A small spherical device of Ferengi manufacture designed to control neural activity in a humanoid brain. The thought maker transmits a low-level electromagnetic signal at its victim, enabling it to implant sensory experiences or trigger memories. Illegal in the Federation.

Torpedo--Starship weapon that exists as a 'box', charged with a high-energetic charge and is used to disable enemy ships. Torpedos can, not like phasers, also be fired at warp speed, because torpedos have a warp-sustaining engine. The Federation uses multiple sorts of torpedos: photon torpedos, quantum torpedos, tri-cobalt torpedos, quad-cobalt torpedos, plasma torpedos and phaser torpedos.

Torpedo Sustainer Engine--A miniature matter/antimatter fuel cell that powers a sustainer coil so that a photon torpedo can maintain a warp field handed off from the torpedo launching tube.

Trabe Police--Law enforcement agency of the Trabe people. The Trabe police were responsible for the persecution of members of the Kazon and encouraged their captives to fight amongst themselves. Eventually, the Kazon became a powerful fighting force and freed themselves from their captors in 2346.

Tractor Beam--A focused linear graviton force beam used to physically manipulate objects across a short distance. Tractor beams are used by Federation starships and other space vehicles as a means of towing other vessels. Tractor beams are also used to provide short-range guidance for approaching or departing shuttlecraft.

Transponder, Emergency--A small device about the size of a lipstick case, capable of transmitting an emergency distress call across limited interstellar distances.

Transporter ID Trace--A computer record maintained by a Federation starship's transporter system, recording the identity of all transport subjects.

Tri-Cobalt Satellite--Energy weapon in the war between planets Vendikar and Eminiar VII that ended in 2267.

Tri-Cobalt Torpedo--Torpedo charged with tri-cobalt. Far more destructive than a photon torpedo.

Triangular Envelopment--A classis attack posture in which three spacecraft surround an enemy vessel at points describing the vertices of an equilateral triangle.

Triceron--An explosive compound used in bombs.

Tricobalt Explosive--Energy Weapon in the war between planets Vendikar and Eminiar VII that ended in 2267. None of these devices were used for some five hundred years, but simulations of them were used in the computer war between the two planets.

Trinitrogen Chloride--Chemical. Trinitrogen  Chloride, also known as TNC, is used as a cleaning solution. TNC can also be used in some types of plasma grenades.

Tritonium--Radioactive material. Tritonium isotopes have been used as subdermal tracking implants.

Ubean Prison--Rehabilitation facility under Ubean jurisdiction in the Delta Quadrant.

Ultraviolet Satellite--Device capable of generating high levels of untraviolet radiation.

Ultritium--A powerful chemical explosive.

Uridium--Unstable mineral substance. Even in its raw form, uridium ore can explode if subjected to a strong electrical charge.

User Code Clearance--A code required to access the control systems of a starship.

Varaxian LM-7--A deadly biological weapon.

Varon-T Disruptor--A small pistol, banned in the Federation. A vicious weapon, the Varon-T disrupted the body from the inside out, causing a slow and painful death.

Velos VII Internment Camp--Cardassian prison camp.

Veridium Six--A slow-acting, cumulative poison. Veridium Six has no known antidote.

Verteron Mine--Weapon designed by Hekaran scientists. These devices, which resemble signal buoys, are programmed to emit a massive verteron pulse when any ship approaches. The pulse would effectively disable all the subspace systems of the affected ship.

V-Shar--Security arm of the Vulcan government.

Vulcan Death Grip--There is no such thing as a Vulcan death grip.

Vulcan Nerve Pinch--A Vulcan technique in which finger pressure is applied to certain nerves at the base of the neck, instantly and nonviolently rendering that individual unconscious. Although the technique appears to work on nearly all humanoid species (and several nonhumanoids as well), few non-Vulcans have been able to master the nerve pinch.

Warning Beacons--Transmitter intended to inform nearby space vehicles of a potential hazard.

Warrior's Anthem--Klingon battle song that is often sung by warriors as they go into battle.

Weapons Locker--Aboard a starship or space station, a storage facility for armaments.

Yellow Alert--A state of significantly increased readiness aboard Federation starships and other vessels. In the event of an actual or imminent emergency, the commanding officer can order the state of readiness increased even further to Red Alert.
