Indonesian Muslim Jihad leader takes police chief to court over arrest
The leader of a militant Muslim group in Indonesia, charged with provoking violence against
Christians in the Maluku islands, has filed a counter charge against police over his arrest.
Jaffar Umar Thalib, who leads the Java island-based Laskar Jihad, declared in a pre-trial suit
that his arrest on Friday was illegal and demanded to be released.
The dossier stated that the suit, lodged at the South Jakarta district court, was directed
against General Suroyo Bimantoro, as the head of the national police.
Thalib was arrested in Surabaya and flown to Jakarta, where he has remained under detention
at the National Police headquarters, but his lawyers say police had not followed procedures in
making the arrest.
Thalib was charged with "public displays of contempt and hatred towards a particular religious
group" and negligence causing the death of another person.
Each charge carries a maximum sentence of five years imprisonment.
