Executive Summary of Moluccas Conflict
- Introductory. I am a native Ambonese which is not only living in Ambon during the
conflict but also a victim of that terrible conflict. I do witnesses that I love peace and
do hope to see a prospectus and peaceful Molucas in the near future. I am very
concern with reconciliation. And I take all the risk with making a reconciliation action
as Bakubai workshop I, II, III and other reconciliation workshops.
- Demography. Religion freedom is never become a problem in Moluccas. The
brotherhood between the religions is very close and tight. It is already proved
hundred of years among the Molucas people. The culture 'Pelagandung' is a kind of
ways of life between Christian and Moslem people especially in middle of Molucas.
The friendship of Christian and Moslem villages still going till now on.
- Environmental aspect. It is very important and helpful to understand that the
conflict is happened in the middle of political chaos in Indonesia.
- External Provocateur. The physical conflict was happened after 1.500 Ambonese
with criminal records arrived in Ambon from Jakarta after the Ketapang Conflict in
Jakarta. They want to make a revance to the special Moslem etnicts in Molucas.
- Scope of conflict. The conflict was only happened in middle of Molucas; Ambon,
Saparua, Haruku islands or known as Lease islands. All about 25% of the whole
province of Molucas.
- Parties involved in conflict. The conflict is involving Moslem and Christian
Protestant only but not with Christian Catholic. Not only native tribes but also some
other tribes mainly Butonese, Buginese and Makasarese are involved in this social
conflict.
- The conflict is not religion conflict. The provacateurs use the religion issues and
local values issues to blow up the conflict.
- The conflict is internal problem of Republic Indonesia. I do believe that the
best solution can be handle by the serious actions from Indonesian government.
International interventions such as peace-keeping forces are not needed because it
will make everything more complicated. However International supports and
humanitarian supports are exactly needed by Moluccas people to enlighten people
suffering.
- The separatism of Moluccas as well know as RMS separatism are not wellcome and hard agaist by the moslem as ever declated on Dec 28, 2000 by a forum namely Forum Kedaulatan Maluku led by Manuput, Hergki Hatu and others.
With this witness I do hope that The American government will help people of Moluccas by pushing Indonesian Government to keep special attention on Moluccas conflict. thank you for your kindness and the chance to give my witness in front of all honorable members of The United Nation commission on Freedom Religion. May God help Moluccas people and may God bless all of you.
