Maluku Police arrest FKM separatist leader

AMBON, Maluku (JP): Maluku Police detained on Monday the Maluku Sovereignty Front (FKM) separatist movement's leader Alex Manuputty, following the recent hoisting of the separatist flag and alleged treasonable activities in the disputed province.

FKM secretary-general Hengky Manuhutu confirmed that Alex Manuputty was detained by the police on Monday after being questioned for about five hours from 10 a.m. local time at Maluku Police headquarters.

"Alex is being detained for a period of 20 days, starting Monday, pending his case being brought to court," Hengky told The Jakarta Post by phone later in the day.

Alex has been charged of violating articles 154 and 155 of the Criminal Code for displaying hostile intentions towards the state/treason and for expressing hostility against the government. The articles carry a maximum penalty of seven years and 4.5 years in prison respectively.

Earlier in the day, Maluku Police chief Brig. Gen. Firman Gani urged people to stay calm and let the authorities handle the separatist movement in accordance with the prevailing regulations.

"We urge people from both the Muslim and Christian camps not to get emotional over this separatist issue.

"We hope in today's probe that Alex Manuputty will reveal the reasons behind his separatist activities and we can continue the legal process against him," Firman told the media on Monday. This was the first official comment from the police on the separatist movement following a separatist flag-hoisting ceremony which took place on April 25.

A brief 10-minute flag-hoisting ceremony took place on April 25 at the house of FKM leader Alex Manuputty in the Kudamati area of Nusaniwe district at about 7 a.m., but shortly afterwards the flag was pulled down by police.

The separatist flag was hoisted alongside a United Nations flag and the Indonesian national red-and-white pennant.

Groups of Christian grassroots supporters also staged a demonstration at Maluku Police headquarters on Monday supporting the arrest of Alex Manuputty but also asking the authority to be fair in upholding the law and take stern measures against any other parties trying to stir up chaos in Maluku.
